The student completed a 22 day field placement at Asha Nivas in Chennai, India. Asha Nivas is a non-profit established in 1976 to serve marginalized women and children in slums. It provides services like education, health programs, and youth development. The student participated in community activities, awareness classes, and conducted surveys to learn about issues like school dropout rates and the lack of parental priority on education. The placement improved the student's documentation, public speaking, organizing, and communication skills through practical experience.

5. DURATION The social work student did 22 days field work in the agency, Asha Nivas as part of one month block placement. (2009 February 2 nd – 28 th )

Asha Nivas is a Registered Voluntary Organisation initiated in July 1976 by Dr. Kurian Thomas out of a deep concern for the marginalised and exploited women and children in difficult circumstances residing in Madras city slums. Asha Nivas upholds the human and social values in its commitment to the poor. The centre offers services to women and children in the slums of Chennai . The children are educated through pre-schools, non-formal education, continuing education, vocational and skill training. The center promotes community health, especially in the areas of drug abuse and HIV/Aids.

7. Asha Nivas envisages a fully developed and integrated society wherein today's women in difficult circumstances and children in distress would live with human rights and dignity .

13. The Administration The administration and management of the centre are executed by the Manager and the Administrative officer assisted by Chief finance officer and other staff. The Extension department The Extension department is managed by a Chief Co-ordinator who is assisted by the coordinators, organizers and animators at grass root level. The Academic Affairs The Academic Affairs department works under the guidance of a professor of social work and assisted by a qualified librarian and a supporting staff.
