Fibre-optic sensors and smart composites have potential applications for monitoring the structural health of concrete structures. Fibre-optic sensors can be embedded in fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites used to strengthen concrete. This allows the composite to both reinforce the structure and monitor it in real-time. Optical fibres can measure strain and temperature with high accuracy and resolution without impacting the mechanical properties of the structure. The development of distributed fibre sensors provides continuous monitoring along the length of the structure.
