The number of women undergoing sterilization surgery in India increased 36% between 2012-2013 and 2013-2014, while the number of men undergoing vasectomies dropped by 24%. In 2013-2014, 41.28 lakh women underwent sterilization compared to 91,652 men. Most state governments spend a much larger portion of their family planning budgets on sterilization incentives for women rather than improving equipment, staff training, or promoting long-term contraceptive methods. Experts say that the burden of India's family planning policies falls primarily on women.
