India has decided to systematically count the number of stillbirths for the first time. Stillbirths have remained invisible and uncounted until now. The health ministry plans to monitor stillbirths at 50 medical colleges to determine the causes, such as maternal health conditions or issues during delivery. India aims to reduce its stillbirth rate to less than 10 per 1,000 births by 2030.

India has for the first time decided to systematically count the exact number
of children dying in their mother's womb.The world's stillbirth capital, India,
according to a study , records an estimated 1,680 stillbirths daily . However,
India itself has never calculated the actual number of such deaths.
In an exclusive interview to TOI, Dr Ajay Khera, deputy commissioner in the
ministry of health, said, “We recently set up the India Newborn Action Plan,
under which we have decided to map the actual rate of stillbirths in India.“
“Stillbirth has remained invisible till now and never been accurately
calculated,“ he added.
According to Dr Khera, India targets to achieve a stillbirth rate of less than 10
per 1,000 live births by 2030.

At present, it is estimated to be 22 per 1000 live births “Globally there is a lot
of discussion on monitoring stillbirths. This is because stillbirths are an
indication of the quality of obstetric care in the country . It is estimated that
seven lakh newborn deaths take place every year globally . We believe the
number of stillbirths is the same,“ Dr Khera said.
“We want to know what is causing these stillbirths -is it that the mother was
suf fering from malaria or high blood pressure, or is it because intra partum
care was so bad that the child didn't get delivered,“ he added.
“We will now start monitoring every stillbirth at around 50 medical colleges,
where we will perform a ver bal and medical autopsy to see why the stillbirth
took place.We will also conduct a formal biopsy to see if it was medical
failure or the mother's disease that killed the child before being born,“ he
said.

Health ministry joint secretary Rakesh Kumar added, “We can't remain still about stillbirths
anymore.“
India is among 10 countries, which, though they contribute 54% of the worldwide live
births, make up for 66% or 1.8 million of all stillbirths.Around 2.6 million stillbirths occur
worldwide each year during the last trimester -98% of them in lowand middle-income
countries.
Sadly , the number of stillbirths worldwide has declined by only 1.1% per year since 1995,
from 3 million (1995) to 2.6 million.
Experts say that if every woman had access to a skilled birth attendant -a mid-wife and, if
necessary ,a physician -for both essential care and procedures such as emergency
caesarean sections, we would see a dramatic decrease in the number of stillbirths.
The main causes of stillbirth are childbirth complications, infections during pregnancy ,
disorders -especially hypertension and diabetes -foetal growth restriction and congenital
abnormalities.
