Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a cultural practice primarily found in North Africa, classified as a criminal offense in the UK since 1985 and illegal to perform abroad since 2003. It affects mainly girls aged 5 to 8 years, with approximately 137,000 individuals in the UK impacted by FGM, which is associated with beliefs related to cultural and gender identity but offers no medical benefits and poses significant risks. For concerns about FGM, individuals can contact the NSPCC helpline for support, available 24/7.
