2. Reading skills
"Reading is the process of looking at a
series of written symbols and getting
meaning from them."
Reading skills lead a person to interact
and gain meaning from written language.
There are several components one must
master which lead to independently
comprehending the intended message
being relayed in the written content.
3. External distractions or internal wandering thoughts can
lead to a lack of focus while reading. Create a conducive reading
environment by minimizing distractions. Practice mindfulness techniques
to improve your concentration and stay engaged with the material.
Subvocalization: Subvocalization is the habit of pronouncing each word
in your head as you read. While some level of subvocalization is natural,
excessive subvocalization can slow down your reading speed. To
overcome this, try to be aware of it and gradually reduce the tendency by
focusing on visualizing the content or using your finger to guide your
eyes along the lines.
4. Reading Aloud: Some people have a habit of reading aloud, which can slow down
reading speed. If this is a problem, try to consciously stop reading aloud and shift to
silent reading. You can use your finger or a pointer to help you transition.
Ineffective Skimming and Scanning: Skimming and scanning are useful
techniques for quickly extracting information. Skimming involves quickly glancing
over the text to get the main idea, while scanning involves searching for specific
information. Practice these techniques to improve your ability to quickly grasp the
content.
Overemphasis on Word-for-Word Understanding: Not every word needs to be
fully understood to comprehend the overall meaning of a text. Train yourself to focus
on the main ideas and key points, and only delve into detailed understanding when
necessary.
Lack of Pre-Reading: Before delving into a text, spend a few minutes previewing
headings, subheadings, and any summary or conclusion sections. This can give you
a roadmap for what to expect, enhancing your comprehension.
5. Lack of Purpose: Clearly define your purpose for reading. Whether it's for
information, entertainment, or learning, having a clear goal will help you stay
focused and extract the relevant details.
Regression: Regression occurs when you constantly go back and re-read the
same passage. This can be a time-consuming habit that affects
comprehension. Train yourself to resist the urge to go back and re-read. Use a
pointer, like your finger or a pen, to guide your eyes forward and maintain a
steady pace.
Lack of Purpose:
• Issue: Reading without a clear purpose can lead to lack of engagement and
focus.
• Solution: Clearly define your purpose for reading – whether it's for
information, entertainment, or learning. Having a specific goal in mind helps
you stay focused and extract the relevant information more efficiently.
6. Conclusion : Remember that breaking habits takes time
and consistent effort. Gradually incorporate these tips into
your reading routine, and you should see improvements in
your reading habits and overall efficiency . In the end
" Reading is important because if you can read ,you can learn
anything about everything and everything about anything"
