Fats play an important role in the body by providing energy, absorbing vitamins, and maintaining healthy skin and hair. There are three main types of fat: unsaturated or "good" fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that lower disease risk; saturated or "bad" fats that raise cholesterol; and trans fats that are the worst and double the risk of heart disease. A healthy diet focuses on unsaturated fats and limits total fat intake. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can help regulate hormones and reduce chronic disease risk.
