The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer and consists of four sublayers including the stratum corneum. The dermis lies below the epidermis and consists of collagen, elastic, and reticular fibers that modify the structure and function of the epidermis. The deepest layer, the hypodermis, consists of connective tissue, elastic fibers, and fat that act as an energy reserve, insulator, and determine body contour. The skin has several important functions including protection, thermoregulation, and vitamin D synthesis.
