Fashion is like a train, it will
come and go....if you like it,
go with it.... Otherwise wait
for the next one.
 Fashion is the particular
style that is popular at a
given period of time.
Fashion Cycle
 The way of fashion change is described as fashion
cycle. Generally fashion cycle is used to explain the
process that a type of fashion goes through.
 Fashion moves through different stages during its cycle
of existence.
 Fashion acceptance is generally called as a fashion
cycle.
 The fashion cycle is usually represent as a bell shaped
curve with 5 stages.
The fashion cycle: The fashion cycle is usually represent as a bell shaped
curve with 5 stages.
1-Introduction
2-Rise in popularity/ demand increase
3-Peak of popularity
4-Decline in demand
5-Rejection
Introduction stage:
 Most new styles are introduced in the high
level.
 Product costs are high and only few can
afford.
 Celebrities, TV stars, models buy these
clothes as they want to wear them in some
events.
 Production in small quantities gives a
designer more freedom, flexibility, and
room for creativity.
 Then designers create new designs by
changing elements such as shape, line,
color, fabric, and details and their
relationship to one another.
Demand increase stage:
 New styles worn by celebrities on television, to attract
the attention of the general public.
 Viewers may wish to buy the new styles but perhaps
cannot afford them.
 Manufactures use less expensive fabric and modify the
designs to sell in low price.
 Mass production reduces the price of the fashion, and
become more sales.
Peak of popularity stage:
 Fashion at this stage is most popular, it may be in such
demand that many garment manufacturers copy it
or produce adaptations of it at many price levels.
 Variety of price levels.
 Due to mass acceptance the production reaches peak.
Decline in demand stage:
 In this stage, consumer
demand is decreasing,
going down the slope.
 Decreasing demand for
the fashion.
 Mass production finally
end up in fashion
conscious people gets
bore of the style and they
look for something new.
Rejection stage:
 Last phase of the cycle.
 Fashion moves to beginning of the new style.
 Very low price.
 Consumers not interested.
 The rejection of a style just because it is out of fashion
is called consumers obsolescence.
Theories of fashion:
 Fashion Theory is a
theory that explains
the effect of Fashion
to the Society. A
Fashion theory also
explain the origin of
Fashion and how
and why it keeps
changing with time.

Trickle Down Trickle UP Trickle Across
Trickle Down Theory:
 This is the oldest theory of fashion.
 It indicates the true fashion.
 It starts from top social level people to
low social level people.
 Royal families introduced the fashion in
olden days.
 Gradually upper class people copy them
and then by the lower class of people.
 Fashion pass from fashion leaders to the
lower class people also.
 Example- Jeans, Asymmetrical tops.
Trickle Up Theory:
 This theory is a newer theory.
 It is purely an idea of youngsters.
 Fashions pass from youth to the aged
people.
 This is also called street fashion.
 Youth create new mix and match
styles.
 Fashion gradually moves from lower
class people to fashion leaders.
 Example- Denim, glitter tops, T shirts,
metal shine garments.
Trickle Across Theory:
 This is also called as Trickle Across
Theory.
 In 20th century fashion became similar
to all levels of people at the same time.
 Fashion is not created by any section
of people.
 Celebrities give an identity to fashion.
 Various designers introduce new
fashions in affordable prices.
 High priced garment styles are copied
and produced in mass.
 Examples - jogging suits, bell bottom
and kurta style tops.
 many different styles can be accepted
at a same time.

Fashion cycle

  • 2. Fashion Fashion is like a train, it will come and go....if you like it, go with it.... Otherwise wait for the next one.  Fashion is the particular style that is popular at a given period of time.
  • 3. Fashion Cycle  The way of fashion change is described as fashion cycle. Generally fashion cycle is used to explain the process that a type of fashion goes through.  Fashion moves through different stages during its cycle of existence.  Fashion acceptance is generally called as a fashion cycle.  The fashion cycle is usually represent as a bell shaped curve with 5 stages.
  • 4. The fashion cycle: The fashion cycle is usually represent as a bell shaped curve with 5 stages. 1-Introduction 2-Rise in popularity/ demand increase 3-Peak of popularity 4-Decline in demand 5-Rejection
  • 5. Introduction stage:  Most new styles are introduced in the high level.  Product costs are high and only few can afford.  Celebrities, TV stars, models buy these clothes as they want to wear them in some events.  Production in small quantities gives a designer more freedom, flexibility, and room for creativity.  Then designers create new designs by changing elements such as shape, line, color, fabric, and details and their relationship to one another.
  • 6. Demand increase stage:  New styles worn by celebrities on television, to attract the attention of the general public.  Viewers may wish to buy the new styles but perhaps cannot afford them.  Manufactures use less expensive fabric and modify the designs to sell in low price.  Mass production reduces the price of the fashion, and become more sales.
  • 7. Peak of popularity stage:  Fashion at this stage is most popular, it may be in such demand that many garment manufacturers copy it or produce adaptations of it at many price levels.  Variety of price levels.  Due to mass acceptance the production reaches peak.
  • 8. Decline in demand stage:  In this stage, consumer demand is decreasing, going down the slope.  Decreasing demand for the fashion.  Mass production finally end up in fashion conscious people gets bore of the style and they look for something new.
  • 9. Rejection stage:  Last phase of the cycle.  Fashion moves to beginning of the new style.  Very low price.  Consumers not interested.  The rejection of a style just because it is out of fashion is called consumers obsolescence.
  • 10. Theories of fashion:  Fashion Theory is a theory that explains the effect of Fashion to the Society. A Fashion theory also explain the origin of Fashion and how and why it keeps changing with time.
  • 12. Trickle Down Theory:  This is the oldest theory of fashion.  It indicates the true fashion.  It starts from top social level people to low social level people.  Royal families introduced the fashion in olden days.  Gradually upper class people copy them and then by the lower class of people.  Fashion pass from fashion leaders to the lower class people also.  Example- Jeans, Asymmetrical tops.
  • 13. Trickle Up Theory:  This theory is a newer theory.  It is purely an idea of youngsters.  Fashions pass from youth to the aged people.  This is also called street fashion.  Youth create new mix and match styles.  Fashion gradually moves from lower class people to fashion leaders.  Example- Denim, glitter tops, T shirts, metal shine garments.
  • 14. Trickle Across Theory:  This is also called as Trickle Across Theory.  In 20th century fashion became similar to all levels of people at the same time.  Fashion is not created by any section of people.  Celebrities give an identity to fashion.  Various designers introduce new fashions in affordable prices.  High priced garment styles are copied and produced in mass.  Examples - jogging suits, bell bottom and kurta style tops.  many different styles can be accepted at a same time.
