18. The Greens will continue to champion a fairer society rather than simply the economy and to champion the parliament rather than simply the stock exchange.
Good morning, I am Jasmine Fallstich.First, I want to thank-you for providing me with the opportunity to speak to you today. Throughout my presentation I will touch on a number of ideas relating to the stages of behaviour change,
Throughout my presentation I will touch on a number of ideas relating to the stages of behaviour change,We will run through a number of ads, articles and quotes to lend context to how each stage may apply to the individual, the organization and the politician…
The 5 stages includes PrecontemplationContemplationPreparationAction MaintenceYou may have noticed that these are very similar to the consumers 5 stage decision process
Ads, like this one, are targeted at those in the precontemplationThey are designedto alert you to something you are not currently aware of, appeal to your emotions or maybe even ignite something in you
Social norms are established within the second phase and ads often encourage you to weigh you benefits and barriers to behavior changeTake this ad, it’s basically saying “girl, that boy is dirty you better get tested”
While in the preparation phase you are looking for more information to help you make an informed decision since you have already moved past awareness and social norms.
While in the Action Phase, companies like Slimfast want to convince you that you will lose weight faster with their product than without it…even if you are essentially eating candy bars…
Maintenance is just like it sounds… Ads reassure you that you picked the right product, that you are getting the best value basically that you are in good hands.
I’ve taken some liberties apply the stages of change to organizations but consider my rationale.Companies who do this are clearly precontemplators…
In this instance Chevron has a beautiful CSR report, indicating sensitivity to social and environmental issues, but has little substance inside to indicate something other than business as usual. British Petroleum went full out greenwashing in this rebranding campaign, featuring a sunburst and it’s beyond pretroleum tag line
To me green teams fit well in the preparation stage… they look nice and pretty but aren’t necessarily following the logos and slogans with any action.
Now this is ACTION! Dartmouth College hiring a sustainability director… investing in an area of importance, allocating resources, just like when the individual invests time and energy.
Ah Wal-Mart, once my enemy and now I laud you on front of my colleagues… but I digress In a move that signals a desire to maintain the desired behavior change Wal-mart promotes a VP of Sustainability
Political leaders… also move through the stages of change only they do it publicly… Here Dan Quayle fails to make the connection that pollution and impurities in our air and water are one and the same.
Norming, I would definitely say that this is norming. Weighing the barriers, in this case appealing to the masses, over the benefits.
Don’t you just love this picture. He’s right we are headed towards ruination, but he’s not telling us what he is going to do about it.
It’s hard to put politicians and action together but in this case subsidizing green energy over oil companies would definitely be a step in the right direction.
Bob Brown, a legislator in Australia, promises to continue the making changes toward a fairer society… also saying you are in good hands with the greens. So, you ask, how do we get individuals, organizations, and law makers from precontemplation to maintance when it comes to sustainability?
So, you ask, how do we get individuals, organizations, and law makers from precontemplation to maintance when it comes to sustainability? That’s right you, and you, and you…and me!
