- 2. Types Of DocumentaryStyles • Poetic Documentary – They focus on experiences, images, and showing the audience the world through different eyes. This can be quite an unconventional and experimental form of documentary. • Expository Documentary – These documentaries aim to inform and/or persuade. There is often an omnipresent narrator. This is often called the “Voice of God” as they are an all knowing narrator imparting knowledge. This is a more straightforward style of documentary. • Observational Documentary – These aim to observe the world around them. They try to give voice to all sides of the situation by showing the most important first hand moments. These documentary’s are often describes as “Fly on the wall” and often help the audience come to their own opinion. The Filmmakers are an uninvolved bystander. There is no “voice of God” narration or interviews. • Participatory Documentary – These include the filmmaker within the narrative. They use their voice from behind the screen to prod their subjects with questions. • Reflexive Documentary – These are similar to the Participatory documentary as they often include the filmmaker however they have more focus on themselves. Often Draws attention to how the film was made. • Performative Documentary – These are an experimental combination of styles used to stress subject experience and share an emotional response. They often connect and juxtapose personal accounts with historical events.
- 3. Documentary Conventions • Unstagedevents that are authentic and true. • Archival Footage. This can be used to show historical footage. • Non-fiction • Observational footage. Objective record of events. • Reconstructed scenes. These can be used to show the viewer a visual demonstration of an event that happened. There should be an indication that the footage isn’t real with distortion, blurring or colour enhancement. • Interviews. People speak directly about events, giving it a sense of realism. These can take place on or off screen. On screen interviews use the rule of thirds. • Montage. This will be a sequence of visuals that go with the words and narrative. They can be used to indicate a change in time and place. • Interviewees name and relevance at the bottom of the screen in small and simple font. • Formal narration. • Cut away clips of observational footage that it relevant to the topic being discussed.
- 4. Aruba Aruba is asmall island that lies southwest of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. It is now a tourist destination popular for its white sand beaches and clear waters. The cultural centre in Oranjestad is rich with culture offering concerts, ballet, folkloric presentations and art exhibits throughout the year. This makes Aruba a good place to look into and will interest people who enjoy learning about new cultures. Aruba also has lots of geographical settings to see. The Island consists largely of igneous rocks overlain by limestone and is fringed with coral reefs. Its highest point is Mount Jamanota which is 189 metres above sea level. Aruba has a consistent temperature with an annual average of 21 degrees Celsius. This is made pleasant by the winds that keep you cool making it perfect for holidays, especially for people from countries like England who aren’t used to higher temperatures. The Island is also rich with history and the city includes archaeological and numismatic museums. This means that one route I could take the documentary is the historical sides of the island. There are also caves that contain ancient cave drawings that are in the national park. There is also the history of Aruba's economy. Aruba was home to one of the biggest oil refineries in the world. It started in the 1920s at the port of San Nicolas and crude oil was largely imported from Venezuela. The refinery closed down for the second time in 2012 and Aruba wanted to start expanding on tourism by building luxury hotels and casinos.
- 5. Existing Product Research:Our Planet, Coastal Seas This Netflix documentary would be categorized as a Expository Documentary. You can tell by the opening phrase “This series will celebrate the natural wonders that remain, and reveal what me must preserve”. This tells us that we are going to be given information about the planet and we can assume that we will be enlightened about climate change. This documentary also includes the “voice of god” narration by David Attenborough. They make sure to have footage that matches the topic being discussed which is good way of teaching people about something as it can help to visualise it. They also make good use of the music and sound effects. The cinematic music goes along with the tone of the video. When the sharks come on screen the music starts to sound more ominous and even the visuals go darker as it changes from day to night. when the dolphins are fishing the music sounds more inspirational and happy. This type of documentary doesn’t include any interviews. The only person who is informing us of the topic is the narrator. We also only hear his voice. There is never a shot of Attenborough talking to us, it is simply a voiceover.
- 6. Existing Product Research:K2 the Killer Summit – BBC This is an example of an Observational Documentary. It is showing the events of the climb as they happen in real time. They include interviews that talk about the experience from different people wo are involved. It is all real world footage. Non of it is stock footage or recreated image. There is also no “voice of god” narration in this documentary. All of the voiceover is from the interviews. This is because this documentary isn’t aiming to teach us about anything but is more about telling a story. This means that viewers are going to want to hear from the actual people as it makes it seem more genuine and real. To add to this, the majority of the footage is filmed with a handheld camera, giving it an unsteady look. This makes the footage feel real to the people watching opposed to a steady shot with a tripod. It makes the audience really feel that they are experiencing the moment as it happens. This documentary also has the “fly on the Wall” format. We never see or hear from the filmmaker at any time. In this, the filmmaker appears as a silent observer. They have also used an animated image to visualise the journey they have taken by using a map. This illustrates to the audience how far the trip is.
- 7. Practice Interview: Q. Whatis your chosen topic? A. I’m making a fanzine about horror films and how women are seen by looking at the male gaze. I found that a lot of 70s and 80s horror films feature topless women so I want to look into how this has changed from then to now. Q. What will you be doing for the interview? A. I will be interviewing a friend who is a film student at university as I think she will have a lot of knowledge about the subject. Q. How will you present your project? A. I am getting my inspiration from punk fanzines but I cant find one that I like that is the horror genre. I will create one that has the vintage punk look that looks into the horror genre.
