Car Festivals and Races
Many car enthusiasts go to car festivals whether that’s Jap Fest, Carfest,
Bicester heritage, Autosport international etc.
However the first car festival held in the UK was the Goodwood festival
of speed that opened and founded by Lord March in 1993.The first event
of this festival was on 20th June 1993.This festival has been known for its
hill climb event, which old and new motorsport vehicles take part in.The
event is also scheduled to avoid clashing with the F1 and Le Mans
seasons. This is so that fans can see F1 machines, motorbikes and other
motorsport vehicles from motorsport history climb the hill.
Now a days there are a range of events held at the Goodwood festival of
speed, such as the HillClimb,The Soapbox Challenge, Forest Rally
Stage , Michelin Supercar Paddock,The Arena, Catier Style
et Luxe, Moving Motor Show and a few more events.
The soap box challenge started in the year 2000 to 2004 where it was a
downhill challenge for gravity powered cars. This is where cars started
from just below the hill climb finish line to a finish line in front of a
house. The event included entries from top companies such as
Cosworth and Prodrive etc., it also had some famous riders/ drivers
come to the event and take part such as Barry Sheene. But there were
frequent accidents, despite an official cap on the cost of cars, the
unofficial costs were becoming too high, so it did not return in 2005.
But after a few years the event came back in 2013 with companies such
as Bentley andAston Martin competing.
The Forest Rally Stage event was first held in 2005 and is still going to
this very day.The track that went through the forest was widened, and
the rally cars ran down through the forest. They then turned on the
tarmac section just outside the woods and returned up the same track.
This meant that the cars could only run one at a time. However there is
also a demonstration area for rally cars at the top of the hill. This is to
help drivers be aware of possible object and get an idea of the track
before they begin.
Also in 2006 they introduced a full forest stage, which was
designed by Hannu Mikkola, this was a complete circuit,
which had separate start and finish lines at the top of the
forest. This allowed more cars to run and to start at timed
intervals. Just this simple adjustment made quite a lot of
difference for the event.
Another event held at Goodwood is the Michelin Supercar
Paddock even, however since 2000, there has been a
supercar paddock, for road-going supercars. Since 2014 cars
could opt to do a timed run. It is now common for specialty
car manufacturers to show off their latest sports model,
including newly released mass-produced sports models and
working concept models.
Furthermore,The Arena event is more of a new attraction
that came in, in 2019.This even shows off cars drifting and
stunt driving. It's a large tarmac area that used to contain the
Michelin Supercar Paddock, with 2-barrel donuts and 2 wall
rides with a large viewing area just above the drift paddock.
Spectators can watch stunt shows throughout the course of
the day, the drift competition, and the hillclimb shootout on
the big screen.
The other event that’s held at Goodwood is the Cartier Style et Luxe.
This event came started in 1995, this is where a varied selection of cars
are judged by a panel of selected judges consisting of celebrities from
all around the world to car designers. However this event isnt like any
normal event where you can buy tickets and visit. With this event
usually the way to take part is through an invitation, which provides
some leeway as to which types of vehicles usually enter the event.
Also the Moving Motor Show event was first introduced in 2010. Mainly
in response to the cancellation of the British International Motor Show
aimed exclusively for buyers of new cars, allowing them a chance to
test the cars on the course. Following its success, it was announced the
MMS would return in 2011.The 2010 event also included the running of
the new McLaren MP4-12C.
In addition there are a few more events held at Goodwood, to help
bring car enthusiasts together and show of a variety of cars and driver's
skills.
However I do plan on using a variety of big car festivals and talking
about the events that are held at each festival and why it's such a big
thing. This is because I want my audience to get an idea on the things
that are included in the car culture one being car festivals. But also to
make it interesting and engaging for the type of audience I am aiming
at which would be mostly those who have a car and have an intrest in
cars and things related to them.
Car Brands
When creating my fanzine I plan to include a maximum of 6 top car
brands, which will include when the brands first started and how
they’ve become so big today, the types of cars they produce and
their target audience. This is because just talking about the history of
the brands can be quite boring for the audience, so I plan to include a
bit more information of each brand and try to make it as interesting
and engaging for the audience as much as possible.
The top 6 brands I plan to use are Nissan, Mercedes,Volkswagen,
Suzuki, Mclaren, Ford. This is because I want to use a variety of
brands rather than just the brands with the luxury cars. But for my
research I plan to talk about the history of each company to help give
myself an understanding of the aims each brand has.
Nissan:
In 1933 Nissan was born, the founderYoshisuke
Aikawa decided not to use a person's name
which most car brand names come from. They
didn’t choose a person's name for the
company because they didn’t want to be
pursuing personal profit, instead they showed a
determination to invigorate Japan's industry.
However in 1935 Nissan then started japans first
mass production automobile facture, which is
known today as the yokohama plant. Nissan
were achieving an annual production volume of
10,000 vehicles; the plant could provide cars
that were more reasonably priced than any
competing vehicle.
The company was then further, led by American
engineerWilliam R. Gorham, Nissan then
emphasized both US and Japanese strengths,
which demonstrates the culture of diversity that
Nissan continues to value to this very day. They
wanted to demonstrate this culture of diversity
and show people that we are all equal and just
like people every car is unique across the USA
Nissan frequently put Datsun and Nissan cars up on the stage to serve as
part of the sets for the musical reviews, which was a popular form of
entertainment in Japan at the time, for which Nissan served as a sponsor.
This was used to help
Further, Datsun used famous actresses as their image character as early as
the 1930s. So when Datsun and Nissan put their cars on stage in the year
1935 it helped Nissan promote their cars too. But this is just one of the
stories that shows how Nissan was advanced from the very start.
In 1936, Nissan hired four ladies to introduce Datsun and Nissan cars to
consumers. This was a completely new idea for the company that they
came up with. However this was mainly used to communicate directly to
consumers through these ladies who received training from Nissan as
professional demonstrators. These ladies became the forerunners for
Nissan of the “Miss Fair Lady” staff who have continued since 1963.
In 1936, Nissan also participated in Japan's first motorsports event series,
called the All Japan Automobile Competition. They then created a car
especially made for the race which was a Datsun NL-75, which carried the
latest technology available in 1936. But because this car had the latest
technology and the things Nissan wanted to car to have, it gave them
victory in the race. This also showed people that the cars produced the
company are reliable and fast enough to win a race. This race also helped
get Nissan's name out into the car industry and get them recognized.
Here is a video link of the race: https://youtu.be/2BwuoW1pK0Y
In 1937, when it was still rare at the time for
Hollywood movies to be in full color, Nissan tried
to use full color movie film to help shoot its
product advertisements.This also helped
because it helped the advertisement and cars
become more appealing and stand out from
other car advertisements.
The roots of Nissan's zero emission vehicles
dates to just two years afterWWII, when former
TachikawaAircraft engineers, who were part of
Nissan and Prince Motor produced the electric
vehicle called theTama. This car was made
specifically electric because at the time Japan
lost the war, so they were limited on gasoline
which is why the car was made to be electric.
But a total of 1,100 electric vehicles were sold
by 1950 with theTama brand.This showed a
great success in 1950 which then later was
known as the Prince Motor company. This
company then merged with Nissan in 1966.
Nothing much happened between 1950-1952 because Nissan was still trying to
recover after the war. However, Nissan entered into a cooperation agreement with
the Austin Motor Company in 1952.
The car Datsun Sedan 112 was one of the first products created by the
Nissan DesignTeam not long after the war which then the car was established in
1954. However in 1956 model of the Datsun Sedan won the Mainichi Design Award,
in competition with theToyopet Crown RS. It won the design award because the car
overall looked healthy, this was because Japan overall was struggling, and a lot of
people were in poverty due to the war.The war had a massive effect on Japan as a
whole.
Furthermore, in 1959 nissan introduced the bluebird which was a new generation
family car that was more refined then the existing Datsun Sedans. However the
bluebird became very popular and became the biggest hit in japan. Nissan had
achieved sales of 210,000 cars throughout the world in only four years. This meant
that Nissan took the lead in the car market. Also with this car becoming a real
success this mant that Nissan was becoming more and more recognisable
worldwide.
In 1960 Nissan was releasing new products for a new generation using inhouse
technology. Nissan's flexible and rational approach emphasized
speed which demonstrated the diversity which is a key thing that Nissan values even
today.
In 1963 Nissan had opened the Nissan Gallery, in Ginza,Tokyo. This was so that they
could show of their new products and intereact with their customers directly. They
also assigned women specialists to run the show room, known as the "Miss Fair
Lady" staff. These staff members continue to provide hospitality today after 48
generations of replacements.
In 1964, the Prince Motor Company participated
in the second JapanGrand Prix (GT-II category)
held at the Suzuka Circuit with a special model
of the Skyline GT with a 2 litre engine. The
skyline also competed against a Porsche 904
GTS, which was purely built for racing.
However during the race the Skyline managed
to pass the Porsche in just one lap, this was a
shock to most of the crowd as they thought that
Japans technical level was far behind from the
world because they were effected the most
from the war. So when people saw the Skyline
pass the Porsche people were ecstatic and
jumped to their feet, and to this very day it is
one of the most famous stories in Japanese
motor sport history.
In 1969 Nissan released the first GT-R.This car was a touring car of high
performance, which featured many examples of racing technology. This
meant that Nissan could enter more races to help with the company's
reputation.th GT-R was entered in touring races winning a total of 52
races in just three years.
Then in 1972 Nissan released a 4-door hard top car
under the Cedric/Gloria series which was very spacious vehicle and it
appealed to everyone mainly due to its design and it could also be used
as a family car.
In 1979, Nissan released the Cedric/Gloria model 430, the first luxury
sedan in Japan to include a turbo charged engine. However back in the
1970 Nissan struggled to meet the demands of exhaust regulations and
increase milage on each new product it made. However a few years
later it was able to make a product with a turbo charged engine which
was the Cedric/Gloria model 430.
Nissan produced a turbo engine which was also a technology for fuel
economy, and this subsequently allowed Nissan to obtain government
certification.
In 1984 Nissans LAUREL luxury sedan (model
C32) featured the first retractable power door
mirrors in the world. This boosted Nissans
reputation across the world because it was
slightly ahead with the type of technology, they
used for the mirrors compared to other car
companies. Now most cars have retractable
power door mirrors.
In 1985 Nissan produced excellent products,
such as the PRIMERA model P10 and Skyline
model R32. However Nissan also began the 901
activity this was where Nissan were trying to be
the number one car company in the world by
1990.
In 1988 Nissan created the Cima (FY31), which
became an explosive hit.
The unique styling and high performance was
appealing to many people and is an example of
Nissan creating a new market. This also showed
that Nissan were determined to reach to be the
number one car company in the world.
In 1994, Nissan announced that it would include as standard equipment
the SRS air bags. This was because Nissan wanted to add new features
as progressing through time but to also keep drivers safe if any damage
was to happen to a car. Then, in 1995, Nissan announced the including
of dual SRS air bags for the front seats as standard equipment.
In 1997 Nissan produced Prairie Joy which became the first lithium ion
battery EV in the world to be sold on the market. This showed that
Nissan were determined and continuously took on challenges.
Then in 2002 Nissan began the intelligent key system which started
with the new model the march/micra. Also Nissan's lineup of new
generation crossover SUVs began with the Murano (model Z50)
released in 2002.This then continued throughout the years with the
Qashqai/Dualis (model J10) and Juke (F15).
With these models Nissan created new market and the company was
becoming more and more successful because they were willing to take
on new challenges and become better and better each time.
In 2003 Nissan became the number one car
company in the Chinese market. This showed
that the company was making very good
progress and they were achieving where they
wanted to be. However they still wanted to be
able to achieve much more.
Then in 2005 Nissan decided to do a project
called project zero this was where they aimed to
achieve zero deaths and zero injuries which are
caused by road traffic accidents. In this project
they developed the safety shield, this is where
the car protects people, so this includes
detecting moving objects and cameras.This
technology is being included in Nissans safety
technology and is being improved more and
more each year.
In 2010 Nissan released its new electric car
which was the leaf. There was as many as 70,000
leafs on the streets across the world as of 23rd of
July 2013.Then in 2013 Nissan was celebrating 80
years of the company.
Volkswagen:
Volkswagen traces its origins way back to 1904.
This was when word began to spread that
people in Germany were wanting a people's car.
As this was spreading it reach manufactures
across the world. This was when ford began to
create prototypes. However this how
Volkswagen began because their aim was to
produce affordable cars.
But many years passed, and the ideal people's
car wasn’t produced. By 1925 an 18-year old
Hungarian technology student, Bela Barenyl,
submitted a chassis design for the car. It is said
that he was the first person to conceive the
basic design of the beetle car. This car is famous
in the different movies of Herbie. However the
students design didn’t go through into
production.
However the phrase people's car meantVolkswagen in Germany. This is
where the real beginning of the famous car company name began. In
1937, the German Labour Front named the company the Gesellschaft
zurVorbereitung des DeutschenVolkswagens mbH.The company was
then later renamed toVolkswagenwerkGmbH in 1938. However they
still had the phrase people's car in German because they were
determined to make the ideal people's car.
ThereforeVolkswagen had now become a renowned car brand under
the supervision of the Central Government of German. The only
problem for the company was that they didn’t have a factory to help
produce the cars, so nothing really started until 1939. However, the
company was then effected by the war and during that time they could
only produce a small amount of vehicles.
Then by 1940Volkswagen focused on making military vehicle's this was
whenVolkswagens famous bucket car was introduced. This car was a
utility vehicle. Then the Schwimmwagen also made its debut, which
was an incredibly powerful military jeep used to equip the German
forces.
However during the war volkswagen and most
manufctures used slave labour. It is said that
around 15,000 slaves were used to help
manufacture military vehicles.This meant
almost 80% of the company’s wartime
workforce was free labour. In 1948,Volkswagen
became an important economic and symbolic
element in Germany and started gaining
success.
In 1949,Volkswagen introduced its famous split
rear window sedan, which immediately gained a
lot of success around Germany. This helped
valkswagens reputation and got their name
known. However, four years later, the
VolkswagenCabriolet made its debut and the
production of theType 1 Beetle exceeded one
million. The money used from the sales was used
to help build a 32-acre factory in 1957. In
1960 volkswagen decided to expand its product
line and introduced four differentType 3 models.
These models gained a lot of attention and immediately proved
successful, like theVWType 1.This helped the car company be
regognised around the world.
Then by 1968, the company had gained so much fame that Disney
released the ‘Love Bug’ film about Herbie, which was aVW Bettle that
had a mind of its own. This boosted volkswagens reputation.
Volkswagen then merged two previous purchased automotive
companies, namely NSU Motorenwerke andAuto Union towards the
end of the 60's.The two companies then merged which led to the
creation of Audi as we know today.
In 1972 the 15,007,034th Beetle was sold. This was a massive success for
volkswagen and meant that they could now claim the record of
producing the most units of a single-make in history. Also during this
time voltswagen produced its second famous vehichle the golf.
In 1982,Volkswagen signed its first agreement with seat a famous
spanish car manufacturer.
Two years later, for the company to gain global
recognition, it was renamed from
Volkswagenwerk toVolkswagen
Aktiengesellschaft (AG).This name is whats
been regonised for many years and now the
company is a worldwide brand that has made a
huge success.
Then towrads the end of the 80s,Volkswagen
AG gained full ownership of seat which helped
to expand its network and increase volkswagens
reputation.
But today,VolkswagenAG is one of the largest
automobile manufacturers in the world.The
company has a yearly output of 9,727,848
vehicles and is currently the owner of many
popular car brands,lamboghini, Bentley, Bugatti,
Audi, Porsche, and the overseas-brands Skoda
and SEAT.
Overall I plan on talking briefly about the history of each of the 6 car
brands I decide to use. This is because I don’t want my fanzine to be full
of information, I want it to be a mixture of pictures and information.
However the research of just these two car brands have showed me
how the brands and cars have developed over the years but also how
pretty much most of the car brands are under the same companies.
The research of has also showed me how the structure of the cars have
changed over time and how they include more technology such as
cameras, satnavs etc. over the years. I may in my fanzine include a
timeline showing images of the car over the years to show my target
audience how its change. However it does depend on how much time I
have, to make the fanzine and how much work it will take to make.but
it also depends on my target audience as I don’t want to bore them
with too much information
Car Graphics
Car graphics are the designs that are placed on
the car using certain materials such as wrap or
stickers. These are done using specific tools and
techniques to make sure that the wrap is placed on
correctly and meets the client's standards.
Types of wrap:
In car graphics there are a certain types of wrap that
can be placed on the car. However there are certain
colours that each wrap comes in, but it depends on
the supplier on how much stock they have available.
The different types of wrap that are used on cars are,
matte, gloss, satin, chrome, custom, brushed and cut
out shape. Each of these wraps come in certain
colours which are shown in the colour scheme on the
right.
GlossWrap - is a wrap that resembles classic
paintwork because the finish look is smooth and
glossy just like fresh paint on a car. This wrap is
practically available in every colour and available with
metallic flakes in the wrap.
Satin Wrap – is glossier than matte, but not
completely glossy like gloss wrap is. In the satin wrap
you don’t see a clear reflection as you would with the gloss
wrap, but you will see more light reflected than a matte
wrap.
MatteWrap – will show very little reflection. However it
is an uncommon wrap.
Brushed Wrap – there are two types of wrap in this form:
• a wrap with the brushed texture,
• a wrap with a print of a brushed material.
• The first version will look more authentic this is
because it will have much less of a sharp reflection
(which is typical for the brushed look).
Carbon Wrap – again there are two types of wrap in this
form, both of which can be made glossy:
• a wrap with carbon texture in and on it
• a wrap with the looks of carbon printed on
Custom PrintWrap – a custom print can have any image printed
on the wrap. this can be things like a flag, a comic character, text, a
certain type of material or effect etc. These can be made like matte
wrap or gloss wrap.
Cut Out Shape – often referred to as decal or stickers but are
essentially the same as a car wrap.A machine cuts out a certain
shape from the vinyl wrap. The shape is then applied on the surface
in a similar way to applying wrap.
However, there can be quite a big difference in quality between the
different wraps and different manufactures. Some
wraps aren't very glossy and can show huge amounts of orange
peel. Other wraps may not stick well to the surface underneath or
may suffer greatly from UV damage. It can be worthwhile investing
in a proper wrap manufacture as cheap wrap can be damaged and
not very good quality. However certain brands have a very
good reputation. They might be a bit costly, but you'll achieve a
better effect for longer and with less problems unlike cheap wrap.
A cheap wrap can suffer from bubbles that are hard to remove,
leaves residue after removal or is so thin that it can tear when
applying.
Car modifications
Many car enthusiasts put modifications to their car this
could be spoilers, tunning the car, extended trims, LEDs
etc. They add stuff like this because they want their car to
stand out from the rest, so they’ll try make it louder and
faster in most cases, or simply full of graphics.
This is because they simply want to show it off
because it’s like a slight competition especially at car
meet ups and car festivals when many people visit.
However sometimes car meet ups have to be patrolled by
the police because they can get a bit overcrowded and
get a little out of hand
Modifying cars has been going on for many years, from the day the first
car was created. people also modify cars to help with performance, this
is because they want to be able to get the very best out of the car and
improve it as well.
However when thinking about my fanzine I plan to show a mood board
or collage of different modifications as there isn't much to talk about
car modification other than why car enthusiasts add stuff to their car.
Which I have explained in my research so I may simply talk about why
people modify cars in more info, or I may simply just show the different
modifications that can be added to a car.
Car Mechanics/Technicians
Car mechanics/ technicians work on the maintenance and repair of
all aspects of the motor vehicles, performing preventative and
restorative work on the engine, electrics, brakes, gears, fuel pump,
exhaust system, security features and air conditioning. They will also
service the vehicle from top to bottom as this is part of their job role
but also because one tiny problem with the vehicle can lead to a
massive problem such as an accident on the road which could
possibly be fatal.
Mechanics are also the people who built the for every car company
worldwide , so they play a key role in the car industry. However to
say they are the key workers within the car industry they don’t have
a very high salary for the job they do.
A trainee mechanic/car technician has a salary between £7,000 -
£11,000 depending on their age and experience. But a qualified
mechanic has a salary between £13,000 and £20,000 a year with the
potential of progressing to £26,000 with experience.
This isn't much for the job they do as it's their job to make sure that our
lives are safe when we are in a car. They also have quite a lot of
responsibility such as carrying out MOTs, assessing the condition of the
vehicle between required MOTs, dealing with fuel problems, repairing
and fitting tires and much more.
However the qualifications for a trainee isn't specific qualifications
however employers will usually ask for good GCSEs in math's, science,
technology and English. Mechanics may agree to train employees
without any GCSEs as long as they are able to demonstrate a head for
science and engineering and good practical abilities.
But in my fanzine, I plan to talk more about the role of mechanics and
the importance of it, as I think that it's an important part of the car
culture. I will also try to make the information as engaging as possible
as I know just reading information of something can be quite boring if
it's not short and snappy or key points.
Audience Research
For the start of my audience research I will be creating a survey on
survey monkey and sending a link to people to get a rough overview of
my target audience and what their opinion is based on the questions
below:
• Age
• Gender
• Own a car or not
• Do you like car wrap/ graphics
• Do you have any graphics on your car
• Do you have any modifications on ur car or not
Then after the survey I will look at some car forums to get a rough idea
on the ages of users in them.
Observation for age:
Looking at the results for age, the majority of people are in the under 18 age group. Which 6
out of 15 people answered. This is then followed closely by the 35-50 age group, with 5 out of
15 people answered that category. However there is the same amount of people in the 18-24
and 25-34 with a total number of 2 people in the two age groups.
What does this say about my audience:
This tells me that there is a variety of age groups from young teens to adults. This gives me a
better understanding of what age groups I would have to make a fanzine appealing to.
How will I appeal to this audience:
My project will have information and images suitable for people within these age groups and
to help keep them interested
Observation for gender:
A majority of people are male with a number of 11 people that are in that category. This is
then followed by female with a total of 4 people in that category.
What does this say about my audience:
This tells me that there is obviously more male than female, which I expected for a car cultur
fanzine project. But it also narrows it down to help me get a better idea of who my audience
is. However there is a reasonable amount of females to be able to aim this brochure at both
genders.
How will I appeal to this audience:
I will make sure to include designs and colours that are suitable for male and female, so that
none of the genders feel singled out.
Observation for who owns a car:
The results show that the majority of people own a car with a result of 9 people owning a car.
This is then followed closely with 6 people not having a car.
What does this say about my audience:
This tells me that a majority own a car but looking at the age and gender results most of them
are young male drivers, so this then tells me that they will mostly be into anything related to
cars. However there was a reasonable amount of females as well. So both genders maybe into
anything related to cars and may want to be able to design their car when they have the
money.
How will I appeal to this audience:
I will make sure to include designs for all types of cars and that are suitable for all genders.
Observation of who has car graphics on their car:
Looking at the results not many people have car graphics on their vehicle. This may be because
they can't afford it or simple don’t want to do anything to their car. However there were at
least an answer where someone did say they had graphics on their car. But there was also one
person that skipped this question this might because they didn’t understand the question.
What does this say about my audience:
This tells me that not many people have car wrap/graphics on their vehicle but like the idea of
having car graphics/ wrap on their car. However looking at the questions before they may like
the idea of car graphics on their car in the future.
How will I appeal to this audience:
I will make sure to include reasonable pricing on the brochure for each design so that it
will help interest my audience a bit more in car graphics.
Observation of who like car graphics:
The majority of people like car graphics/wrap with a percentage of 53.33%. This may be
because they are into anything related with cars and maybe like the graphics because of video
games. However it is closely followed with the result of people not liking car graphics with a
total of 46.67%.
What does this say about my audience:
This shows me that a majority of people like car graphics/wrap but almost an equal
number don’t like car graphics/wrap.This may be because they purely have no interest in
designs for their car and are just happy with the basic paint job.
How will I appeal to this audience:
I will make sure to include information that will be relevant and hopefully appealing to
help interest my audience.
Observation of who has modifications on their car:
Looking at these results not many people have modification like spoilers or body kit on their
car, with a percentage of 73.33%. it is then followed with some people that do have
modifications to their car with a percentage of 26.67%.
What does this say about my audience:
A majority of people don’t have modifications on their car this may be because
they don’t have the time and money or prefer to leave the car the same way as they bought it.
However there is a reasonable amount of people who do have modifications. So I will make
sure to include designs for cars with and without modifications but also the types of
modifications you can get for a car.
How will I appeal to this audience:
In my fanzine I will make sure to include designs that are suitable for all cars with and
without modifications and include why people put modifications on the car.
Survey Summary
Overall looking at the results from this survey it's given me an
understanding of what type of people like within my target
audience age group are and the type of things they like that are
to do with cars. However I still believe there is some more
audience research I need to do to help narrow down what
people really like about cars, why they turn up at festival and
why they do their cars up. I would be able to find the answers to
these questions from talking to people I know or having a look
at possible car forums where car enthusiasts communicate to
one another.
Looking at car forums may give me a better understanding of
my ideal target audience and i could maybe do another survey
with more straight forward questions to get the answers i want.
Audience Research – Car Forums
When looking at some car forums, I have noticed there are quite a lot of
people that know what they are talking about with cars. However the only
downside is that with the forums it doesn’t give you any idea of the age that
most users on the forums are, so you are kind of left guessing the ages of
users.
To help me get a better understanding of my audience I will create another
survey on survey monkey and post it on a car forum to help give me a better
understanding of the types of people who are part of car forums.
Audience Research – Car Forum Results
When trying to get an ideal understanding of my target audience I tried to create a
survey with more specific questions to get a better understanding. However I
struggled to put my survey on car forums on the internet and some on reddit. This
was mainly because I was new and hadn't been on the forum for as long as most of
the other users. So rather than struggling I will use the age range that I was given at
the start of this project and make my fanzine suitable, appealing and engaging for my
target audience.
But what ive learnt from this is if I plan on using a car forum for another project, I plan
on being on one that ive been on for a while or to make sure i join one inadvance of a
project.
Production andTopic
(fanzine) Research
When considering my fanzine I plan to use a variety of software but
mainly photoshop. This is because a fanzine concentrates on the
visual aspect, so when creating my fanzine it needs to look appealing
for my target audience and it needs to stand out.
However I also plan on using indesign, illustrator and possibly gimp.
This is because I want to interest my target audience by making
something visually engaging but I plan on using the software gimp so
I can make any improvements at home, rather than just at college.
I plan on using these types of software's because I think they are all
great to use for the type of project I'm doing because if it was a video
project, I was doing I would use premier pro as its more specialised in
that type of area. But I plan on using these particular software's
because they specialise in print projects like fanzines.
When thinking about this project there are a lot of things, I need to look
at such as fonts, structure, information, colors etc. But i will also need
to understand what a fanzine is to help me get a rough idea on what I
will be creating.
A fanzine is a small magazine/ brochure type which is created by fans.
However the fanzine isn't a publications of any type it's just purely a
small magazine anyone can create, or view related to a topic. So when
thinking about my research I need to look at the layout/structure of
each page of a fanzine that is close to a topic I plan on creating my
fanzine off.
So when looking at the layout of this fanzine, I plan to use a similar kind
of layout to this fanzine. For example the bold headings, this is because
I want my target audience to see what I will be discussing on that
particular page but the title will be bold and a large size such as 40px
this is because that’s the first thing I want to attract my target
audiences attention.
The sources I plan to use are examples of
fanzine such as this example on the right. I plan
to use a similar layout because I think that it
makes the fanzine look engaging and appealing
to the audience. I also plan to make the
information that I include in the fanzine
engaging as I know from reading a magazine or
brochures myself too much information can be
quite boring. This is why I plan on using key
information that’s engaging for my audience
However looking at the layout of this fanzine,
overall it looks organized and easy to follow. So I
will take this into consideration when creating
my fanzine.
Furthermore, looking at this layout of the same fanzine. I like how
they’ve done a basic page with a picture; I may include something like
this in my fanzine as I think it will break up the amount of information
filled pages. This is because too much information can bore the
audience and I want to be able to interest the audience especially when
it's about the car culture.
I will also include a page which is like a mood board of car photos with
similar cars. This is to try break up the information but also, I've noticed
a lot of fanzines have these type of pages that come up often. So when
thinking about making my own fanzine I will make sure to include quite
a few of these that are relevant to each topic.
The thing that makes a fanzine a fanzine is that its full of images related
to a topic, so when thinking about my fanzine I will have one big topic
overall which is car culture, but I will include other topics which make
that big topic such as car festivals and races, car graphics, car
modifications etc.
I will also make sure to include informative pages
like this example as I think that it looks organized,
but it also makes the images and information
relevant to each other . It also gives the
information related to the topic which the
audience might not know and find it interesting.
But when thinking about my fanzine I need my
information and images look representable as it
could come off as mess and not relevant which
would then make my target audience not want to
read it. So therefore I think the images I am looking
at which are a bit of both images and information
will help me get a rough idea of how-to layout each
individual page of my fanzine.
Overall, I think if I include relevant information, a
lot of images and lay it out correctly I think it will
become engaging and appealing for my target
audience. However the context will be about cars
rather than about a group which fans have created
on this particular fanzine.
Practical Research
In class when preparing for at the time my FMP, I did a
few experiments on photoshop, by selecting certain sections on the
car and changing the colour. I could possibly do the same technique
and use it for the designs when creating my fanzine and possible the
car graphics section in my fanzine.
However when doing these experiments there was some difficulty as
the software was quite slow and would stop responding. So I will
make sure to take this into account as a potential issue that could
happen when creating my fanzine or any other work, I plan on doing
in the future.
When preparing for my FMP at the time, I also
started on some experiments with templates
of vehicles. This was to try and do a before and
after design, which I could maybe include in my
car culture fanzine.
The interesting thing about this was it was an
actual request that a client wanted, which was
for my dad and his car. Luckily for me I was given
an opportunity to do something I was interested
in. However when doing this experiment I had
to consider what the client wanted and try to do
it up the standards of the client.
When doing this I used a software that I have
never used before, which was a software called
coral draw. In this software I was able to create
the design that the client wanted on a template
of the vehicle within the software. However I
was limited on the days I had to complete this
design and the tools within the software as I was
trialing the software. But I did learn quite a few
things with the software.
I found that this software was very good for creating designs on
templates as this is what it specialises in. So when thinking about
my fanzine I plan to use this skills I used in this software and use them
in the other software's I plan to use. This is because the more skills I
have the better and the more I can learn and improve each time.
With the skills it will also help me create my fanzine and help structure
each pages of the fanzine as well as the fanzine as a whole.

Factual project car culture research

  • 1. Factual Project – Car Culture - Research ByTegan Arthur
  • 2. Research Car festivals and Races Car brands Graphics Modifications Mechanics/technicians Audience Production andTopic (fanzine) Practical
  • 3. Car Festivals and Races Many car enthusiasts go to car festivals whether that’s Jap Fest, Carfest, Bicester heritage, Autosport international etc. However the first car festival held in the UK was the Goodwood festival of speed that opened and founded by Lord March in 1993.The first event of this festival was on 20th June 1993.This festival has been known for its hill climb event, which old and new motorsport vehicles take part in.The event is also scheduled to avoid clashing with the F1 and Le Mans seasons. This is so that fans can see F1 machines, motorbikes and other motorsport vehicles from motorsport history climb the hill. Now a days there are a range of events held at the Goodwood festival of speed, such as the HillClimb,The Soapbox Challenge, Forest Rally Stage , Michelin Supercar Paddock,The Arena, Catier Style et Luxe, Moving Motor Show and a few more events.
  • 4. The soap box challenge started in the year 2000 to 2004 where it was a downhill challenge for gravity powered cars. This is where cars started from just below the hill climb finish line to a finish line in front of a house. The event included entries from top companies such as Cosworth and Prodrive etc., it also had some famous riders/ drivers come to the event and take part such as Barry Sheene. But there were frequent accidents, despite an official cap on the cost of cars, the unofficial costs were becoming too high, so it did not return in 2005. But after a few years the event came back in 2013 with companies such as Bentley andAston Martin competing. The Forest Rally Stage event was first held in 2005 and is still going to this very day.The track that went through the forest was widened, and the rally cars ran down through the forest. They then turned on the tarmac section just outside the woods and returned up the same track. This meant that the cars could only run one at a time. However there is also a demonstration area for rally cars at the top of the hill. This is to help drivers be aware of possible object and get an idea of the track before they begin.
  • 5. Also in 2006 they introduced a full forest stage, which was designed by Hannu Mikkola, this was a complete circuit, which had separate start and finish lines at the top of the forest. This allowed more cars to run and to start at timed intervals. Just this simple adjustment made quite a lot of difference for the event. Another event held at Goodwood is the Michelin Supercar Paddock even, however since 2000, there has been a supercar paddock, for road-going supercars. Since 2014 cars could opt to do a timed run. It is now common for specialty car manufacturers to show off their latest sports model, including newly released mass-produced sports models and working concept models. Furthermore,The Arena event is more of a new attraction that came in, in 2019.This even shows off cars drifting and stunt driving. It's a large tarmac area that used to contain the Michelin Supercar Paddock, with 2-barrel donuts and 2 wall rides with a large viewing area just above the drift paddock. Spectators can watch stunt shows throughout the course of the day, the drift competition, and the hillclimb shootout on the big screen.
  • 6. The other event that’s held at Goodwood is the Cartier Style et Luxe. This event came started in 1995, this is where a varied selection of cars are judged by a panel of selected judges consisting of celebrities from all around the world to car designers. However this event isnt like any normal event where you can buy tickets and visit. With this event usually the way to take part is through an invitation, which provides some leeway as to which types of vehicles usually enter the event. Also the Moving Motor Show event was first introduced in 2010. Mainly in response to the cancellation of the British International Motor Show aimed exclusively for buyers of new cars, allowing them a chance to test the cars on the course. Following its success, it was announced the MMS would return in 2011.The 2010 event also included the running of the new McLaren MP4-12C. In addition there are a few more events held at Goodwood, to help bring car enthusiasts together and show of a variety of cars and driver's skills. However I do plan on using a variety of big car festivals and talking about the events that are held at each festival and why it's such a big thing. This is because I want my audience to get an idea on the things that are included in the car culture one being car festivals. But also to make it interesting and engaging for the type of audience I am aiming at which would be mostly those who have a car and have an intrest in cars and things related to them.
  • 7. Car Brands When creating my fanzine I plan to include a maximum of 6 top car brands, which will include when the brands first started and how they’ve become so big today, the types of cars they produce and their target audience. This is because just talking about the history of the brands can be quite boring for the audience, so I plan to include a bit more information of each brand and try to make it as interesting and engaging for the audience as much as possible. The top 6 brands I plan to use are Nissan, Mercedes,Volkswagen, Suzuki, Mclaren, Ford. This is because I want to use a variety of brands rather than just the brands with the luxury cars. But for my research I plan to talk about the history of each company to help give myself an understanding of the aims each brand has.
  • 8. Nissan: In 1933 Nissan was born, the founderYoshisuke Aikawa decided not to use a person's name which most car brand names come from. They didn’t choose a person's name for the company because they didn’t want to be pursuing personal profit, instead they showed a determination to invigorate Japan's industry. However in 1935 Nissan then started japans first mass production automobile facture, which is known today as the yokohama plant. Nissan were achieving an annual production volume of 10,000 vehicles; the plant could provide cars that were more reasonably priced than any competing vehicle. The company was then further, led by American engineerWilliam R. Gorham, Nissan then emphasized both US and Japanese strengths, which demonstrates the culture of diversity that Nissan continues to value to this very day. They wanted to demonstrate this culture of diversity and show people that we are all equal and just like people every car is unique across the USA
  • 9. Nissan frequently put Datsun and Nissan cars up on the stage to serve as part of the sets for the musical reviews, which was a popular form of entertainment in Japan at the time, for which Nissan served as a sponsor. This was used to help Further, Datsun used famous actresses as their image character as early as the 1930s. So when Datsun and Nissan put their cars on stage in the year 1935 it helped Nissan promote their cars too. But this is just one of the stories that shows how Nissan was advanced from the very start. In 1936, Nissan hired four ladies to introduce Datsun and Nissan cars to consumers. This was a completely new idea for the company that they came up with. However this was mainly used to communicate directly to consumers through these ladies who received training from Nissan as professional demonstrators. These ladies became the forerunners for Nissan of the “Miss Fair Lady” staff who have continued since 1963. In 1936, Nissan also participated in Japan's first motorsports event series, called the All Japan Automobile Competition. They then created a car especially made for the race which was a Datsun NL-75, which carried the latest technology available in 1936. But because this car had the latest technology and the things Nissan wanted to car to have, it gave them victory in the race. This also showed people that the cars produced the company are reliable and fast enough to win a race. This race also helped get Nissan's name out into the car industry and get them recognized. Here is a video link of the race: https://youtu.be/2BwuoW1pK0Y
  • 10. In 1937, when it was still rare at the time for Hollywood movies to be in full color, Nissan tried to use full color movie film to help shoot its product advertisements. This also helped because it helped the advertisement and cars become more appealing and stand out from other car advertisements. The roots of Nissan's zero emission vehicles dates to just two years afterWWII, when former TachikawaAircraft engineers, who were part of Nissan and Prince Motor produced the electric vehicle called theTama. This car was made specifically electric because at the time Japan lost the war, so they were limited on gasoline which is why the car was made to be electric. But a total of 1,100 electric vehicles were sold by 1950 with theTama brand. This showed a great success in 1950 which then later was known as the Prince Motor company. This company then merged with Nissan in 1966.
  • 11. Nothing much happened between 1950-1952 because Nissan was still trying to recover after the war. However, Nissan entered into a cooperation agreement with the Austin Motor Company in 1952. The car Datsun Sedan 112 was one of the first products created by the Nissan DesignTeam not long after the war which then the car was established in 1954. However in 1956 model of the Datsun Sedan won the Mainichi Design Award, in competition with theToyopet Crown RS. It won the design award because the car overall looked healthy, this was because Japan overall was struggling, and a lot of people were in poverty due to the war.The war had a massive effect on Japan as a whole. Furthermore, in 1959 nissan introduced the bluebird which was a new generation family car that was more refined then the existing Datsun Sedans. However the bluebird became very popular and became the biggest hit in japan. Nissan had achieved sales of 210,000 cars throughout the world in only four years. This meant that Nissan took the lead in the car market. Also with this car becoming a real success this mant that Nissan was becoming more and more recognisable worldwide. In 1960 Nissan was releasing new products for a new generation using inhouse technology. Nissan's flexible and rational approach emphasized speed which demonstrated the diversity which is a key thing that Nissan values even today. In 1963 Nissan had opened the Nissan Gallery, in Ginza,Tokyo. This was so that they could show of their new products and intereact with their customers directly. They also assigned women specialists to run the show room, known as the "Miss Fair Lady" staff. These staff members continue to provide hospitality today after 48 generations of replacements.
  • 12. In 1964, the Prince Motor Company participated in the second JapanGrand Prix (GT-II category) held at the Suzuka Circuit with a special model of the Skyline GT with a 2 litre engine. The skyline also competed against a Porsche 904 GTS, which was purely built for racing. However during the race the Skyline managed to pass the Porsche in just one lap, this was a shock to most of the crowd as they thought that Japans technical level was far behind from the world because they were effected the most from the war. So when people saw the Skyline pass the Porsche people were ecstatic and jumped to their feet, and to this very day it is one of the most famous stories in Japanese motor sport history.
  • 13. In 1969 Nissan released the first GT-R.This car was a touring car of high performance, which featured many examples of racing technology. This meant that Nissan could enter more races to help with the company's reputation.th GT-R was entered in touring races winning a total of 52 races in just three years. Then in 1972 Nissan released a 4-door hard top car under the Cedric/Gloria series which was very spacious vehicle and it appealed to everyone mainly due to its design and it could also be used as a family car. In 1979, Nissan released the Cedric/Gloria model 430, the first luxury sedan in Japan to include a turbo charged engine. However back in the 1970 Nissan struggled to meet the demands of exhaust regulations and increase milage on each new product it made. However a few years later it was able to make a product with a turbo charged engine which was the Cedric/Gloria model 430. Nissan produced a turbo engine which was also a technology for fuel economy, and this subsequently allowed Nissan to obtain government certification.
  • 14. In 1984 Nissans LAUREL luxury sedan (model C32) featured the first retractable power door mirrors in the world. This boosted Nissans reputation across the world because it was slightly ahead with the type of technology, they used for the mirrors compared to other car companies. Now most cars have retractable power door mirrors. In 1985 Nissan produced excellent products, such as the PRIMERA model P10 and Skyline model R32. However Nissan also began the 901 activity this was where Nissan were trying to be the number one car company in the world by 1990. In 1988 Nissan created the Cima (FY31), which became an explosive hit. The unique styling and high performance was appealing to many people and is an example of Nissan creating a new market. This also showed that Nissan were determined to reach to be the number one car company in the world.
  • 15. In 1994, Nissan announced that it would include as standard equipment the SRS air bags. This was because Nissan wanted to add new features as progressing through time but to also keep drivers safe if any damage was to happen to a car. Then, in 1995, Nissan announced the including of dual SRS air bags for the front seats as standard equipment. In 1997 Nissan produced Prairie Joy which became the first lithium ion battery EV in the world to be sold on the market. This showed that Nissan were determined and continuously took on challenges. Then in 2002 Nissan began the intelligent key system which started with the new model the march/micra. Also Nissan's lineup of new generation crossover SUVs began with the Murano (model Z50) released in 2002.This then continued throughout the years with the Qashqai/Dualis (model J10) and Juke (F15). With these models Nissan created new market and the company was becoming more and more successful because they were willing to take on new challenges and become better and better each time.
  • 16. In 2003 Nissan became the number one car company in the Chinese market. This showed that the company was making very good progress and they were achieving where they wanted to be. However they still wanted to be able to achieve much more. Then in 2005 Nissan decided to do a project called project zero this was where they aimed to achieve zero deaths and zero injuries which are caused by road traffic accidents. In this project they developed the safety shield, this is where the car protects people, so this includes detecting moving objects and cameras. This technology is being included in Nissans safety technology and is being improved more and more each year. In 2010 Nissan released its new electric car which was the leaf. There was as many as 70,000 leafs on the streets across the world as of 23rd of July 2013.Then in 2013 Nissan was celebrating 80 years of the company.
  • 17. Volkswagen: Volkswagen traces its origins way back to 1904. This was when word began to spread that people in Germany were wanting a people's car. As this was spreading it reach manufactures across the world. This was when ford began to create prototypes. However this how Volkswagen began because their aim was to produce affordable cars. But many years passed, and the ideal people's car wasn’t produced. By 1925 an 18-year old Hungarian technology student, Bela Barenyl, submitted a chassis design for the car. It is said that he was the first person to conceive the basic design of the beetle car. This car is famous in the different movies of Herbie. However the students design didn’t go through into production.
  • 18. However the phrase people's car meantVolkswagen in Germany. This is where the real beginning of the famous car company name began. In 1937, the German Labour Front named the company the Gesellschaft zurVorbereitung des DeutschenVolkswagens mbH.The company was then later renamed toVolkswagenwerkGmbH in 1938. However they still had the phrase people's car in German because they were determined to make the ideal people's car. ThereforeVolkswagen had now become a renowned car brand under the supervision of the Central Government of German. The only problem for the company was that they didn’t have a factory to help produce the cars, so nothing really started until 1939. However, the company was then effected by the war and during that time they could only produce a small amount of vehicles. Then by 1940Volkswagen focused on making military vehicle's this was whenVolkswagens famous bucket car was introduced. This car was a utility vehicle. Then the Schwimmwagen also made its debut, which was an incredibly powerful military jeep used to equip the German forces.
  • 19. However during the war volkswagen and most manufctures used slave labour. It is said that around 15,000 slaves were used to help manufacture military vehicles. This meant almost 80% of the company’s wartime workforce was free labour. In 1948,Volkswagen became an important economic and symbolic element in Germany and started gaining success. In 1949,Volkswagen introduced its famous split rear window sedan, which immediately gained a lot of success around Germany. This helped valkswagens reputation and got their name known. However, four years later, the VolkswagenCabriolet made its debut and the production of theType 1 Beetle exceeded one million. The money used from the sales was used to help build a 32-acre factory in 1957. In 1960 volkswagen decided to expand its product line and introduced four differentType 3 models.
  • 20. These models gained a lot of attention and immediately proved successful, like theVWType 1.This helped the car company be regognised around the world. Then by 1968, the company had gained so much fame that Disney released the ‘Love Bug’ film about Herbie, which was aVW Bettle that had a mind of its own. This boosted volkswagens reputation. Volkswagen then merged two previous purchased automotive companies, namely NSU Motorenwerke andAuto Union towards the end of the 60's.The two companies then merged which led to the creation of Audi as we know today. In 1972 the 15,007,034th Beetle was sold. This was a massive success for volkswagen and meant that they could now claim the record of producing the most units of a single-make in history. Also during this time voltswagen produced its second famous vehichle the golf. In 1982,Volkswagen signed its first agreement with seat a famous spanish car manufacturer.
  • 21. Two years later, for the company to gain global recognition, it was renamed from Volkswagenwerk toVolkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (AG).This name is whats been regonised for many years and now the company is a worldwide brand that has made a huge success. Then towrads the end of the 80s,Volkswagen AG gained full ownership of seat which helped to expand its network and increase volkswagens reputation. But today,VolkswagenAG is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world. The company has a yearly output of 9,727,848 vehicles and is currently the owner of many popular car brands, lamboghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Audi, Porsche, and the overseas-brands Skoda and SEAT.
  • 22. Overall I plan on talking briefly about the history of each of the 6 car brands I decide to use. This is because I don’t want my fanzine to be full of information, I want it to be a mixture of pictures and information. However the research of just these two car brands have showed me how the brands and cars have developed over the years but also how pretty much most of the car brands are under the same companies. The research of has also showed me how the structure of the cars have changed over time and how they include more technology such as cameras, satnavs etc. over the years. I may in my fanzine include a timeline showing images of the car over the years to show my target audience how its change. However it does depend on how much time I have, to make the fanzine and how much work it will take to make.but it also depends on my target audience as I don’t want to bore them with too much information
  • 23. Car Graphics Car graphics are the designs that are placed on the car using certain materials such as wrap or stickers. These are done using specific tools and techniques to make sure that the wrap is placed on correctly and meets the client's standards. Types of wrap: In car graphics there are a certain types of wrap that can be placed on the car. However there are certain colours that each wrap comes in, but it depends on the supplier on how much stock they have available. The different types of wrap that are used on cars are, matte, gloss, satin, chrome, custom, brushed and cut out shape. Each of these wraps come in certain colours which are shown in the colour scheme on the right. GlossWrap - is a wrap that resembles classic paintwork because the finish look is smooth and glossy just like fresh paint on a car. This wrap is practically available in every colour and available with metallic flakes in the wrap.
  • 24. Satin Wrap – is glossier than matte, but not completely glossy like gloss wrap is. In the satin wrap you don’t see a clear reflection as you would with the gloss wrap, but you will see more light reflected than a matte wrap. MatteWrap – will show very little reflection. However it is an uncommon wrap. Brushed Wrap – there are two types of wrap in this form: • a wrap with the brushed texture, • a wrap with a print of a brushed material. • The first version will look more authentic this is because it will have much less of a sharp reflection (which is typical for the brushed look). Carbon Wrap – again there are two types of wrap in this form, both of which can be made glossy: • a wrap with carbon texture in and on it • a wrap with the looks of carbon printed on
  • 25. Custom PrintWrap – a custom print can have any image printed on the wrap. this can be things like a flag, a comic character, text, a certain type of material or effect etc. These can be made like matte wrap or gloss wrap. Cut Out Shape – often referred to as decal or stickers but are essentially the same as a car wrap.A machine cuts out a certain shape from the vinyl wrap. The shape is then applied on the surface in a similar way to applying wrap. However, there can be quite a big difference in quality between the different wraps and different manufactures. Some wraps aren't very glossy and can show huge amounts of orange peel. Other wraps may not stick well to the surface underneath or may suffer greatly from UV damage. It can be worthwhile investing in a proper wrap manufacture as cheap wrap can be damaged and not very good quality. However certain brands have a very good reputation. They might be a bit costly, but you'll achieve a better effect for longer and with less problems unlike cheap wrap. A cheap wrap can suffer from bubbles that are hard to remove, leaves residue after removal or is so thin that it can tear when applying.
  • 26. Car modifications Many car enthusiasts put modifications to their car this could be spoilers, tunning the car, extended trims, LEDs etc. They add stuff like this because they want their car to stand out from the rest, so they’ll try make it louder and faster in most cases, or simply full of graphics. This is because they simply want to show it off because it’s like a slight competition especially at car meet ups and car festivals when many people visit. However sometimes car meet ups have to be patrolled by the police because they can get a bit overcrowded and get a little out of hand
  • 27. Modifying cars has been going on for many years, from the day the first car was created. people also modify cars to help with performance, this is because they want to be able to get the very best out of the car and improve it as well. However when thinking about my fanzine I plan to show a mood board or collage of different modifications as there isn't much to talk about car modification other than why car enthusiasts add stuff to their car. Which I have explained in my research so I may simply talk about why people modify cars in more info, or I may simply just show the different modifications that can be added to a car.
  • 28. Car Mechanics/Technicians Car mechanics/ technicians work on the maintenance and repair of all aspects of the motor vehicles, performing preventative and restorative work on the engine, electrics, brakes, gears, fuel pump, exhaust system, security features and air conditioning. They will also service the vehicle from top to bottom as this is part of their job role but also because one tiny problem with the vehicle can lead to a massive problem such as an accident on the road which could possibly be fatal. Mechanics are also the people who built the for every car company worldwide , so they play a key role in the car industry. However to say they are the key workers within the car industry they don’t have a very high salary for the job they do.
  • 29. A trainee mechanic/car technician has a salary between £7,000 - £11,000 depending on their age and experience. But a qualified mechanic has a salary between £13,000 and £20,000 a year with the potential of progressing to £26,000 with experience. This isn't much for the job they do as it's their job to make sure that our lives are safe when we are in a car. They also have quite a lot of responsibility such as carrying out MOTs, assessing the condition of the vehicle between required MOTs, dealing with fuel problems, repairing and fitting tires and much more. However the qualifications for a trainee isn't specific qualifications however employers will usually ask for good GCSEs in math's, science, technology and English. Mechanics may agree to train employees without any GCSEs as long as they are able to demonstrate a head for science and engineering and good practical abilities. But in my fanzine, I plan to talk more about the role of mechanics and the importance of it, as I think that it's an important part of the car culture. I will also try to make the information as engaging as possible as I know just reading information of something can be quite boring if it's not short and snappy or key points.
  • 30. Audience Research For the start of my audience research I will be creating a survey on survey monkey and sending a link to people to get a rough overview of my target audience and what their opinion is based on the questions below: • Age • Gender • Own a car or not • Do you like car wrap/ graphics • Do you have any graphics on your car • Do you have any modifications on ur car or not Then after the survey I will look at some car forums to get a rough idea on the ages of users in them.
  • 31. Observation for age: Looking at the results for age, the majority of people are in the under 18 age group. Which 6 out of 15 people answered. This is then followed closely by the 35-50 age group, with 5 out of 15 people answered that category. However there is the same amount of people in the 18-24 and 25-34 with a total number of 2 people in the two age groups. What does this say about my audience: This tells me that there is a variety of age groups from young teens to adults. This gives me a better understanding of what age groups I would have to make a fanzine appealing to. How will I appeal to this audience: My project will have information and images suitable for people within these age groups and to help keep them interested
  • 32. Observation for gender: A majority of people are male with a number of 11 people that are in that category. This is then followed by female with a total of 4 people in that category. What does this say about my audience: This tells me that there is obviously more male than female, which I expected for a car cultur fanzine project. But it also narrows it down to help me get a better idea of who my audience is. However there is a reasonable amount of females to be able to aim this brochure at both genders. How will I appeal to this audience: I will make sure to include designs and colours that are suitable for male and female, so that none of the genders feel singled out.
  • 33. Observation for who owns a car: The results show that the majority of people own a car with a result of 9 people owning a car. This is then followed closely with 6 people not having a car. What does this say about my audience: This tells me that a majority own a car but looking at the age and gender results most of them are young male drivers, so this then tells me that they will mostly be into anything related to cars. However there was a reasonable amount of females as well. So both genders maybe into anything related to cars and may want to be able to design their car when they have the money. How will I appeal to this audience: I will make sure to include designs for all types of cars and that are suitable for all genders.
  • 34. Observation of who has car graphics on their car: Looking at the results not many people have car graphics on their vehicle. This may be because they can't afford it or simple don’t want to do anything to their car. However there were at least an answer where someone did say they had graphics on their car. But there was also one person that skipped this question this might because they didn’t understand the question. What does this say about my audience: This tells me that not many people have car wrap/graphics on their vehicle but like the idea of having car graphics/ wrap on their car. However looking at the questions before they may like the idea of car graphics on their car in the future. How will I appeal to this audience: I will make sure to include reasonable pricing on the brochure for each design so that it will help interest my audience a bit more in car graphics.
  • 35. Observation of who like car graphics: The majority of people like car graphics/wrap with a percentage of 53.33%. This may be because they are into anything related with cars and maybe like the graphics because of video games. However it is closely followed with the result of people not liking car graphics with a total of 46.67%. What does this say about my audience: This shows me that a majority of people like car graphics/wrap but almost an equal number don’t like car graphics/wrap.This may be because they purely have no interest in designs for their car and are just happy with the basic paint job. How will I appeal to this audience: I will make sure to include information that will be relevant and hopefully appealing to help interest my audience.
  • 36. Observation of who has modifications on their car: Looking at these results not many people have modification like spoilers or body kit on their car, with a percentage of 73.33%. it is then followed with some people that do have modifications to their car with a percentage of 26.67%. What does this say about my audience: A majority of people don’t have modifications on their car this may be because they don’t have the time and money or prefer to leave the car the same way as they bought it. However there is a reasonable amount of people who do have modifications. So I will make sure to include designs for cars with and without modifications but also the types of modifications you can get for a car. How will I appeal to this audience: In my fanzine I will make sure to include designs that are suitable for all cars with and without modifications and include why people put modifications on the car.
  • 37. Survey Summary Overall looking at the results from this survey it's given me an understanding of what type of people like within my target audience age group are and the type of things they like that are to do with cars. However I still believe there is some more audience research I need to do to help narrow down what people really like about cars, why they turn up at festival and why they do their cars up. I would be able to find the answers to these questions from talking to people I know or having a look at possible car forums where car enthusiasts communicate to one another. Looking at car forums may give me a better understanding of my ideal target audience and i could maybe do another survey with more straight forward questions to get the answers i want.
  • 38. Audience Research – Car Forums When looking at some car forums, I have noticed there are quite a lot of people that know what they are talking about with cars. However the only downside is that with the forums it doesn’t give you any idea of the age that most users on the forums are, so you are kind of left guessing the ages of users. To help me get a better understanding of my audience I will create another survey on survey monkey and post it on a car forum to help give me a better understanding of the types of people who are part of car forums.
  • 39. Audience Research – Car Forum Results When trying to get an ideal understanding of my target audience I tried to create a survey with more specific questions to get a better understanding. However I struggled to put my survey on car forums on the internet and some on reddit. This was mainly because I was new and hadn't been on the forum for as long as most of the other users. So rather than struggling I will use the age range that I was given at the start of this project and make my fanzine suitable, appealing and engaging for my target audience. But what ive learnt from this is if I plan on using a car forum for another project, I plan on being on one that ive been on for a while or to make sure i join one inadvance of a project.
  • 40. Production andTopic (fanzine) Research When considering my fanzine I plan to use a variety of software but mainly photoshop. This is because a fanzine concentrates on the visual aspect, so when creating my fanzine it needs to look appealing for my target audience and it needs to stand out. However I also plan on using indesign, illustrator and possibly gimp. This is because I want to interest my target audience by making something visually engaging but I plan on using the software gimp so I can make any improvements at home, rather than just at college. I plan on using these types of software's because I think they are all great to use for the type of project I'm doing because if it was a video project, I was doing I would use premier pro as its more specialised in that type of area. But I plan on using these particular software's because they specialise in print projects like fanzines.
  • 41. When thinking about this project there are a lot of things, I need to look at such as fonts, structure, information, colors etc. But i will also need to understand what a fanzine is to help me get a rough idea on what I will be creating. A fanzine is a small magazine/ brochure type which is created by fans. However the fanzine isn't a publications of any type it's just purely a small magazine anyone can create, or view related to a topic. So when thinking about my research I need to look at the layout/structure of each page of a fanzine that is close to a topic I plan on creating my fanzine off. So when looking at the layout of this fanzine, I plan to use a similar kind of layout to this fanzine. For example the bold headings, this is because I want my target audience to see what I will be discussing on that particular page but the title will be bold and a large size such as 40px this is because that’s the first thing I want to attract my target audiences attention.
  • 42. The sources I plan to use are examples of fanzine such as this example on the right. I plan to use a similar layout because I think that it makes the fanzine look engaging and appealing to the audience. I also plan to make the information that I include in the fanzine engaging as I know from reading a magazine or brochures myself too much information can be quite boring. This is why I plan on using key information that’s engaging for my audience However looking at the layout of this fanzine, overall it looks organized and easy to follow. So I will take this into consideration when creating my fanzine.
  • 43. Furthermore, looking at this layout of the same fanzine. I like how they’ve done a basic page with a picture; I may include something like this in my fanzine as I think it will break up the amount of information filled pages. This is because too much information can bore the audience and I want to be able to interest the audience especially when it's about the car culture. I will also include a page which is like a mood board of car photos with similar cars. This is to try break up the information but also, I've noticed a lot of fanzines have these type of pages that come up often. So when thinking about making my own fanzine I will make sure to include quite a few of these that are relevant to each topic. The thing that makes a fanzine a fanzine is that its full of images related to a topic, so when thinking about my fanzine I will have one big topic overall which is car culture, but I will include other topics which make that big topic such as car festivals and races, car graphics, car modifications etc.
  • 44. I will also make sure to include informative pages like this example as I think that it looks organized, but it also makes the images and information relevant to each other . It also gives the information related to the topic which the audience might not know and find it interesting. But when thinking about my fanzine I need my information and images look representable as it could come off as mess and not relevant which would then make my target audience not want to read it. So therefore I think the images I am looking at which are a bit of both images and information will help me get a rough idea of how-to layout each individual page of my fanzine. Overall, I think if I include relevant information, a lot of images and lay it out correctly I think it will become engaging and appealing for my target audience. However the context will be about cars rather than about a group which fans have created on this particular fanzine.
  • 45. Practical Research In class when preparing for at the time my FMP, I did a few experiments on photoshop, by selecting certain sections on the car and changing the colour. I could possibly do the same technique and use it for the designs when creating my fanzine and possible the car graphics section in my fanzine. However when doing these experiments there was some difficulty as the software was quite slow and would stop responding. So I will make sure to take this into account as a potential issue that could happen when creating my fanzine or any other work, I plan on doing in the future.
  • 46. When preparing for my FMP at the time, I also started on some experiments with templates of vehicles. This was to try and do a before and after design, which I could maybe include in my car culture fanzine. The interesting thing about this was it was an actual request that a client wanted, which was for my dad and his car. Luckily for me I was given an opportunity to do something I was interested in. However when doing this experiment I had to consider what the client wanted and try to do it up the standards of the client. When doing this I used a software that I have never used before, which was a software called coral draw. In this software I was able to create the design that the client wanted on a template of the vehicle within the software. However I was limited on the days I had to complete this design and the tools within the software as I was trialing the software. But I did learn quite a few things with the software.
  • 47. I found that this software was very good for creating designs on templates as this is what it specialises in. So when thinking about my fanzine I plan to use this skills I used in this software and use them in the other software's I plan to use. This is because the more skills I have the better and the more I can learn and improve each time. With the skills it will also help me create my fanzine and help structure each pages of the fanzine as well as the fanzine as a whole.
