The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

3. Whisky
-deep dive into the culture of where the whisky has come from
-give information on the whisky and what its all about
-put a modern funky twist ono the images that I will have in the
fanzine and of the whisky
-show the history of the whisky but also put my own twist on it
4. This is a existing product that I have found
and liked the style of with some pages
looking like its been draw and then other
pages looking like its been made digitally
and also the very simple but affective
colour scheme is something that stands
out to me. I also believe that the blend
between the amount of text and images is
very good with there not being too much
text to were it looks boring and too much
to read and there being images that are
big and bold that cover a page that draw
your attention to the page more and
makes it look interesting. This existing
product will relate to my product because I
want to create a fanzine that has text and
information on it but doesn’t look boring
and has a interesting new refreshing feel
to it that combines the weird but smart
together.
5. This is another existing product and is
very different to my last one with there
being mainly no colours and just tones
from white, grey and black but its very
out there and I like the wired almost
twisted images that have been used
thieve made food look like art with the
way they have taken photos of the food
and because there just on plane white
backgrounds and the images have no
colour to them. Even the pages that
have colour on them like the pink page
still have a element of simplism but also
is a very modern and eye catching
page. I think this existing product will be
like my final product in the way that I
want every image to look different but
unique to me and my style on how I
want to do it.
6. This is my third existing product and is a
fanzine about rock music which is a lot
different to the fanzine that I aim to do
but the style of the fanzine is a lot like the
style I aim for. The person that has made
this has made it look very old and almost
vintage and dated but is actually quite
new. A lot of things about this fanzine is
what I like for example the wide range of
fonts they have used is really good with
there not being much text that is in the
same font. The images that have been
used are very grungy and gritty to fit the
whole rock theme of the fanzine.
7. 1. What is supernatural medicine
Answer- supernatural medicine is the use of dead
crows to test the pureness of the air and people believed
that it would be the reason why you get ill if the air is not
pure enough.
2. How did herbal remedies work
Answer- home remedies are medicines that were
made using the basic things you found in a home at that
time period like flowers from the garden and herbs that
would be crushed together that would be left at your
bedside to cure you.
3. What's the weirdest medicine that was used in the
medieval periods
Answer- The weirdest medicine they used was
bloodletting which is an old method where the doctor
would extract blood from the person's vein and collect
the blood and often mix the blood with other ingredients.
4. What's your favourite part of medieval medicine
Answer- my favourite part is that in the medieval period
they knew hardly anything about medicine and were very
clueless about what they were actually doing and how to
do it.
5. What is a barbers surgeon
Answer- A barber surgeon is the person that you would
go to if there was any type of surgery that you needed.
6. How far has medicine come
Answer- instead of medicine and illness being about
beliefs and if you go to church or not it's about facts and
research and the doctors know what they are doing and
not chance on people's lives
7. What's the most interesting part of modern medicine
Answer- The fact that we still don't know a lot about
cancer and the whole area of it is a bit of a mystery and
we are still very far away from getting a cure.
8. In my interview one of the main things that I enjoyed was that I got to learn about a topic that I don't know much
about and since I was able to make the questions I learnt some thongs I would have most likely not found out.
One of the things that I think went well is that I think the interview flowed really well and wasn’t awkward or slow
another thing is that all the questions had good and enjoyable answers a third thing that I think went well about
the interview is that I feel like the interview could have gone on for much longer because of how much there was
to talk about.
9. This is the first experiment that I did for my factual
project and I think is my best out of the two that I
have done in this experiment I have combined luxury
colours with a neon glow to add the futuristic feel and
look to the whole piece. The way I did this was on
photoshop and used a bright colour to do the line and
then used brush effects to create the glow affect
that’s on the bottle and the background. I created this
type of experiment to play around with the idea of
creating a very alien surrounding to the usual whisky
feel and look of the images.
I believe this is my best experiment because of how
well the colours work together and how good the
neon glow look and how good it blends I also like the
futuristic cyberpunk feel to the image.
10. This is my second experiment that I have done
and this one was more of me trying new skills and
going out of my comfort zone and with this I
aimed to create a very futuristic Tokyo city feel
with all the neon signs and bright colours I also
wanted to see how far I could go without it looking
too much and to busy but I think I have added a
lot but not too much. Like the one before I used
photoshop to create this but used the paint brush
to create a glow effect on the bottle so that even
with all the colour on the image its still the focus
point of the image.
This experiment I think is my least favourite out of
the two because its so over the top its almost
going away from the theme that I want to create.
12. In 1923 Shinjiro Torii envisioned a whisky filled with the essence of
Japanese nature and hand-crafted by artisans through a patient
process of enhancing the work of nature.
He dreamt of creating subtle refined yet complex whisky that would
suit the delicate palate of the Japanese and enhance their dining
experience.
Though initially inspired by traditional Scottish whisky Torii envisioned a
Japanese approach by choosing a terrain and climate completely different
from those of Scotland. Torii chose the region of Yamazaki on the
outskirts of Kyoto as the birthplace of Japanese whisky.
Shinjiro Torii was born in the Meiji Period when Western culture
and civilization suddenly flowed into Japan.
Ending his schooling at age thirteen Torii entered into an
apprenticeship at a pharmaceutical wholesaler in Osaka that
carried Western liquors. There he engaged in stylish Western
pursuits and mastered techniques of mixing then developed a
discriminating palate and nose. He mastered techniques of
mixing and blending through his teenage apprenticeships.
Through my research I have discovered
that Japanese whisky is very mysterious
even though it's been around for over a
100 years. Suntory is the most popular
distillery in Japan and the most well-
known. There whiskeys range greatly in
price with most of their whiskeys being
aged and that meaning they are more
expensive with the cheapest being forty
pounds all the way up to forty thousand
pounds.

16. Image Mood Board
On this mood board I focused of images the style and mood
of the images and not really what was in the image. I started
by looking for images that was very typically of whisky photos
with the mainly dark with no background then I moved
towards looking for images that have whisky bottles in it that
seem out of place but mix well for example of this the whisky
bottle on the mossy rocks is a good example because it’s a
place you wouldn’t expect to see a very posh nice whisky in. I
then looked at what kind of style I want with the aesthetic of
the photo and that’s why I have a range of photo styles from
modern and clean to very art deco and vintage and even abit
of grunge gritty styled photos as well to give it a different feel.
My aim for this mood board was to show the wide range of
styles and aesthetics that I can create and also the range of
backgrounds that I can have in the images as well and I think
that I have done that well.
Text & Colour Mood Board
On this mood board I compiled a range of fonts and colours
that I could use for my fanzine. The fonts that I have gathered
are all in the style that I want to create with some being very
simple but affective and others being abstract. I think that the
fonts that I have found would work well with the style and
theme that I am aiming for. The colours that I have chosen for
the mood board are very different but all would work in my
fanzine for example the neon colour pallets that I have put in
would look good if a did a cyberpunk style but the art deco
vintage styled colours would look good if a did a grunge style
fanzine.
For this mood board my aim was to show off the type of style I
want for the whole magazine and what type of colour pallet I
could use and what fonts would look good and I believe that I
have met this aim with the colours and fonts that I have
chosen.
17. Front cover- glitch effect with logo on it
Double page spread 1 image- black and white with neon affect
Double page spread 1 text- the history of Japanese whisky
Double page spread 2 image- close up image of whisky bottle
Double page spread 2 text- in your face page with text
Double page spread 3 image- interview
Double page spread 3 text- purple based two images
Double page spread 4 image- vintage feel
Double page spread 4 text- pale abit abstract
Double page spread 5 image- image that fills page with little else
Double page spread 5 text- image in the middle with text at the bottom of the page
Back cover- loads of images in a nice layout with all the same filters
18. For the planning of my fanzine I have created experiments and mood boards to help
me create the best piece that I can.
I have also created a production schedule to help with my timing on the project
With all of this planning combined with the mood boards and mind maps and
experiments I think that I have a good shot at making a good fanzine in the style that
I want to make.
