Abstract
In this talk, we will introduce a simulation-based process improvement framework and methodology called the Process Wind Tunnel. We will describe this framework and introduce the underlying technologies namely process mapping and data collection, data wrangling, exploratory data analysis and visualization, process mining, discrete-event simulation optimization and solution implementation. We will discuss how Process Wind Tunnel framework was utilized to improve a critical business process namely, the post-execution trade settlement process. The work builds upon and generalizes the Lean Document Production solution (2008 Edelman finalist) for optimizing printshops to more general and complex business processes found within the insurance and financial services industry.
One of the things I enjoy most in process analysis is combining technologies. The idea is that deliverables generated by one technology, can be associated nicely with deliverables generated by other technologies. Such combinations reveal new magnificent insights about our processes, and opportunities for improving them.
The three technologies that I find extremely friendly and "opened minded" for such a challenge are: the BPM manager of Priority ERP, Disco - an Automatic Process Discovery tool, and QlikView -a business discovery tool.
The attached presentation includes practical examples to get you inspired. So, go ahead and give it a try!

MULTIOBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION AND QUANTITATIVE TRADE-OFF ANALYSIS IN XEROGRAPHI...Sudhendu Rai
A complex engineering system such as a xerographic marking engine is an aggregate of interacting subsystems that are coupled through a large number of constraints and design variables. The traditional way of designing these systems is to decouple the overall design into smaller subsystems and assign teams to work on these subsystems. This approach is critical to making the project manageable and enabling concurrent development. However, if the goal is to design systems that can deliver best possible performance, i.e. if the performance limits are being pushed to the extreme, characterizing the interactions becomes critical.
Multiobjective optimization is a design methodology that addresses the issue of designing large systems where the goal is to simultaneously optimize a finite number of performance criteria that come from one or more disciplines and are coupled through a set of design variables and constraints. This approach to design makes explicit and quantitative the inherent trade-offs that need to be made in doing coupled system design. It also enables the determination of the attainable limits of performance from a given system.
This paper will discuss the multiobjective optimization methodology and optimal methods of performing quantitative trade-off analysis. These design methods will be applied to problems from the xerographic design domain and results will be presented.

Strategy, Business models & Service designJoel Sandén
My slides from a 2 part lecture at Halmstad University about business strategy and how changing customer behaviours and social changes has paved the way for service design and a new kind of focus on the customer.
We've all seen the big "macro" features in .NET, this presentation is to give praise to the "Little Wonders" of .NET -- those little items in the framework that make life as a developer that much easier!
My team created a new business model for Nest Labs using the business model canvas. We decided to introduce a new service to be integrated with Nest Protect and other Nest products. This service, called SafeNest, will operate as a safety and security system for a low subscription fee. To use SafeNest customers must have a Nest Protect. Hardware used to enhance the SafeNest service are sensors and a specialty Nest/Jawbone bracelet we invented called Nestlet.
The purpose of this service is to increase consumer investment in the Nest system. As the leader and pioneer of the "Internet of Things," our strategy is to grab as much Home Automation market share as possible, as quickly as possible before our Apple launches the HomeKit. This service will also steal market share from the Home Safety and Security market (ADT, LifeAlert).
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled Biz Models for Hi-Tech Products to analyze the business model for a Nest Lab’s Smart Thermostat. This thermostat learns user behavior, uses motion sensors to detect human presence, and programs itself. We recommend that Nest sell directly to end users and work with HVAC, construction and building automation companies to have their thermostat installed in new buildings. Nest, which was recently acquired by Google, can profit from the sale of these devices and the sale of software apps that can add functionality to the product.
Proefficient 1.0 - – AN HOLISTIC TOOL TO CALCULATE AND INTERPRET OVERALL EQU...Ruchir Gupta
OEE is the standard way of calculating the efficiency of the Productivity in the operational time. It is necessary to
evaluate OEE in order to get the glimpse of how effectively and efficiently the resources are getting utilized.
Conventionally, the calculation of OEE is done using MS Excel where the complete production data is being recorded
in Excel sheets and based on the data the calculation is done for the OEE as
Efficiency = Output/Input = (Input-Losses)/ Input
OEE = Availability*Performance*Quality

2. Rockwell Software PlantMetrics Customizable and scalable Make it unique to your plant Continuum from simple to complex; small to large Measure what is important to you Reliable, 24/7 data collection from any OPC-compliant devices from any manufacturer Data storage in an efficient, open database Access to all reports with a Web Browser Built-in HTML report writer Built-in Web Server Automatic website creation and maintenance A complete system for: Event collection and analysis Efficiency monitoring
3. Rockwell Software PlantMetrics Records data to calculate OEE: Availability: are machines running when they are supposed to? Performance: are machines (or people) working as fast as they should? Quality: how much waste is being produced? Production counts, downtime, cycle times, schedules etc. Reliable Production Data Collection (no more clipboards)
4. Rockwell Software PlantMetrics What is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)? OEE stands for Overall Equipment Effectiveness (also referred to as Overall Equipment Efficiency) and is a standard measure of performance which brings together the three most significant production metrics, Availability, Performance and Quality. Why is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) important to me? While many companies monitor and act upon downturns in availability, performance and quality, few look at the three together or fully consider the impact that changes made to improve one area may have on the others. OEE bridges that gap by unifying all three aspects of the production process into one single measurement. How can I justify investment in an OEE tool without first identifying the ROI? This is a bit of a ‘chicken and egg’ question – only a very coarse assessment of the potential for improvement and, from that, return on investment (ROI) can be made prior to the implementation of a system of this kind. However, from experience we know that you will start to feel the benefit almost immediately and, dependent on the solution that you select, will recover the initial investment costs within the first few months of operation. It’s a point to note that while many companies believe that they can’t significantly improve without major capital investment, those companies, when measured, are only typically achieving 40% throughput with what they’ve got (world-class companies achieve greater than 80%!).
5. Rockwell Software PlantMetrics PlantMetrics uses an OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) model to measure the performance of manufacturing equipment. The OEE model yields a single performance rating for every activity area (workcell, line, area, or plant) being monitored, thereby providing a simple way to determine quickly if an activity area is performing adequately. The OEE value can be used to assess a single machine’s performance over time or to compare the performance of machines to each other. Three components contribute to an OEE value: availability, throughput, and quality. Each is a percentage, and the OEE value is the product of these three percentages, and therefore is also a percentage. Availability is a ratio of running time to available time. Available time may be defined by a schedule or modified by planned downtime events such as preventive maintenance. Throughput is the performance of a machine when it is running compared to its ideal cycle time. Quality is the percentage of good parts that are produced. The OEE calculation that is used by PlantMetrics is the product of these three components: OEE = Availability * Throughput * Quality OEE is a valuable method of analyzing performance because it is widely recognized and can be applied to any type of industry, factory, or machine. OEE is the default efficiency calculation performed by PlantMetrics; additional or alternate calculations can be implemented. Further, PlantMetrics supports the collection of detailed event data, which can be used to analyze the specific causes of inefficiencies.
11. Rockwell Software PlantMetrics You NEED Data: Production counts Scrap rates Machine cycle times Downtime times and causes Unproductive time (in all its forms) Quality problems But you also need A way to identify the real problems A way to figure out what else you need to measure You can’t do it (well) with a clipboard and a spreadsheet!
12. Rockwell Software PlantMetrics Captures machine events What are your machines doing? Downtime, setups, blocked/starved, etc. Completely customizable
13. Rockwell Software PlantMetrics Captures upstream and downstream events (Inclusive) What causes a machine to have a non-operating status?
