In many realms of medicine, objective diagnoses can be made: A clavicula is broken. An infection is present. TSH levels meet the diagnostic criteria for hypothyroidism. Psychiatry, on the other hand, deals with psychological phenomena and behaviors. Can these, too, be “defined objectively and by scientific criteria (Gergen, 1985), or are they social constructions?” (Sadock et al., 2015).
Thanks to myriad advances during recent decades, we know that psychopathology is caused by many interacting factors. Theoretical and clinical contributions to the field have come from the neural sciences, genetics, psychology, and social-cultural sciences. How do these factors impact the expression, classification, diagnosis, and prevalence of psychopathology, and why might it be important for a nurse practitioner to take a multidimensional, integrative approach?

The history of the diagnosis of mental disorders is fraught with examples of how cultural norms and prejudices interfere with and warp a diagnosis. The result is that normal behavior and orientations have been pathologized as an illness or disease. An example of this would be the story of Alan Turing, the famous British computer scientist of the 20th century, who was instrumental in inventing modern computers and deciphering German code in World War II. Psychopathology is defined as the study of mental illness. Culture, social, biological, and psychological factors can influence the development of psychopathology. For years researchers have studied humans to determine if genetic or environmental factors have a more significant impact on a person's behavior. The better we can understand why a mental disorder develops, the easier it will be to find effective treatments (Cuncic, 2020). For this discussion post, I will identify different factors that influence psychopathology.
Biological (Genetic and Neuroscientific)
Biological factors affect psychopathology. According to Sadock et al. (2015), "The study of families with the use of population genetic methods over the last 50 years has consistently supported a genetic, heritable component to mental disorders." Hereditary traits influence how a person will respond to different situations throughout their lifetime. The brain is comprised of many neurons and neurotransmitters that play a role in mental health disorders. Research has found 40-70% of a person's cognition, temperament, and personality arise from genetic factors (Sadock et al., 2015). In addition, many factors (drug use, smoking, premature birth) during pregnancy affect a fetus's biological makeup that can cause lifelong complications. Schizophrenia, depression, autism, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are all neuropsychiatric conditions that originate during brain development (Sadock et al., 2015). Also, the way a person's body reacts to medications used to treat these disorders is influenced by genetics. It is impossible to explain the influence biologics have on psychopathology in one discussion post; many detailed books have been written hundreds of pages long attempting to explain the phenomenon.
Psychological (Behavioral and Cognitive Processes, Emotional, Developmental)
Psychological factors play a role in psychopathology. These factors can occur due to traumas such as childhood neglect, the death of an immediate family member, and abuse (physical, emotional, sexual). Physiological symptoms observed with psychopathology vary but can include changes in eating habits or mood, excessive worry, anxiety, distress, or fear, inability to concentrate, irritability or anger, low energy, sleep disturbances, and feelings of fatigue (Cuncic, 2020). Many times mental health disorders arise from the adverse effects during childhood or young adulthood. Science toward Policy and Practice

During the second half of the 20th century there was an immense increase in both empirical findings on, and
conceptual understanding of, the effects of nature, nurture, and developmental processes on psychological
functioning—both normal and abnormal. Unfortunately, the good science has also been accompanied by ex-
cessive polarizing claims and by unwarranted extrapolations. This article provides a summary review of the
real gains in knowledge, outlines some of the misleading claims, and notes the potential for research and for
science-led improvements in policies and practice. The need to bring about a better interpretation of genetic,
psychosocial, and developmental research strategies and theoretical concepts is emphasized.
INTRODUCTION
Over the last half century, there has been an explosion
of knowledge on the effects of nature, nurture, and
developmental processes. As a result, we have a much
improved understanding of many of the mechanisms
involved in normal and abnormal development,
which carries with it a huge potential for improving
children’s lives. Unfortunately, these advances have
been accompanied by as much misleading scientific
evangelism and journalistic hype as by good science
and honest reporting. As a consequence, both the pages
of scientific journals and the media have been full of the
most absurd confrontations and polarizations. These
have given rise to an unhelpful level of misunder-
standing of the true scientific advances and, more es-
pecially, about their meaning and the implications for
policy and practice. Of course, there have also been
numerous examples of good reporting by scientists
and by journalists. There is every reason to be in-
debted to both. The need is to avoid the twin dangers
of destructive cynicism and gullible expectation.
Nature, nurture, and development are dealt with
in this article as separate topics (with the focus being
mainly on their effects on psychopathology). In each
case, the real advances in knowledge are considered
first, some of the misleading claims are outlined sec-
ond, and the potential for research and for improve-
ments in policies and practice are noted third. Al-
though these are considered as supposedly separate
influences, the truth is that they are closely inter-
twined. The separation is heuristically useful for test-
ing causal hypotheses, but it is crucial that such hy-
potheses deal with the different forms of interplay
that may be occurring. To a considerable extent, it is
the failure to do so that has led to many of the polar-
izing battles and absurd claims.

The Impact of Psychological Capital on Teaching Effectiveness in the Bafut Su...
The study adopted the survey design and used 78 teachers selected using the demographic cluster and incidental sampling techniques from a cross section of 324 secondary school teachers in Bafut Sub Division in the North West Region of Cameroon to examine the impact of psychological capital on teaching effectiveness. The over emphasis on academic qualification and negligence of developing teachers psychological capital compromise their effectiveness and therefore problematic. Data for this study was collected using a modified version of the recently constructed psychological capital questionnaire Luthans,F., Youssef, C. M., and Avolio, B.J, 2007 made up of 48 items for both teachers and administrators , 43 questionnaire items for conscientiousness, emotional stability, extraversion, person job fit and person organization fit and 31 items for teaching effectiveness constructed by the researcher. The overall instrument was made up of 122 items. The STATA statistical package was used to run Regressions and establish Correlations used to establish relationships and in verifying the Research hypotheses. Psychological capital was found to be a significant predictor of teaching effectiveness after controlling for Emotional stability, extraversion, conscientiousness, person job fit and person organization fit. Also Self Efficacy, Hope and Optimism were shown to have significant impact on teachers’ Enthusiasm, Expectations and Task Orientation respectively. The study also found that the relationship between resilience and commitment was not statistically significant as the null hypothesis was retained. The study concludes with a call for the inclusion of psychological capital training programs to develop teachers’ psychological capital as an alternative to mitigate the ongoing challenges of ineffectiveness in the secondary school. environment.. This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the evidence for the effectiveness of psychological interventions in reducing internalized stigma among adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The review identified 27 studies that met eligibility criteria. Meta-analysis of 18 studies found a statistically significant overall effect in lowering internalized stigma. Subgroup analysis found Narrative Enhancement and Cognitive Therapy to have a statistically significant and highly homogenous effect. The values, principles, and methods of cognitive psychology and psychodynamic psychotherapy are anticipated to be utilized in an investigation which replaces maladaptive behaviors. The interest in the study is centered around increasing social response while decreasing maladaptive behaviors by utilizing differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors. Differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors is a procedure that reduces a problematic behavior by reinforcing an appropriate alternative behavior that serves the same function.

The study adopted the survey design and used 78 teachers selected using the demographic cluster and incidental sampling techniques from a cross section of 324 secondary school teachers in Bafut Sub Division in the North West Region of Cameroon to examine the impact of psychological capital on teaching effectiveness. The over emphasis on academic qualification and negligence of developing teachers psychological capital compromise their effectiveness and therefore problematic. Data for this study was collected using a modified version of the recently constructed psychological capital questionnaire Luthans,F., Youssef, C. M., and Avolio, B.J, 2007 made up of 48 items for both teachers and administrators , 43 questionnaire items for conscientiousness, emotional stability, extraversion, person job fit and person organization fit and 31 items for teaching effectiveness constructed by the researcher. The overall instrument was made up of 122 items. The STATA statistical package was used to run Regressions and establish Correlations used to establish relationships and in verifying the Research hypotheses. Psychological capital was found to be a significant predictor of teaching effectiveness after controlling for Emotional stability, extraversion, conscientiousness, person job fit and person organization fit. Also Self Efficacy, Hope and Optimism were shown to have significant impact on teachers’ Enthusiasm, Expectations and Task Orientation respectively. The study also found that the relationship between resilience and commitment was not statistically significant as the null hypothesis was retained. The study concludes with a call for the inclusion of psychological capital training programs to develop teachers’ psychological capital as an alternative to mitigate the ongoing challenges of ineffectiveness in the secondary school. environment.. The interest in the study is centered around increasing social response while decreasing maladaptive behaviors by utilizing differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors. Differential reinforcement of alternative behaviors is a procedure that reduces a problematic behavior by reinforcing an appropriate alternative behavior that serves the same function.

There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.

An infection is present. TSH levels meet the diagnostic criteria for hypothyroidism. Psychiatry, on the other hand, deals with psychological phenomena and behaviors. Can these, too, be “defined objectively and by scientific criteria (Gergen, 1985), or are they social constructions?” (Sadock et al., 2015).Thanks to myriad advances during recent decades, we know that psychopathology is caused by many interacting factors. Theoretical and clinical contributions to the field have come from the neural sciences, genetics, psychology, and social-cultural sciences. How do these factors impact the expression, classification, diagnosis, and prevalence of psychopathology, and why might it be important for a nurse practitioner to take a multidimensional, integrative approach?Review this week’s Learning Resources, considering the many interacting factors that contribute to the development of psychopathology.Consider how theoretical perspective on psychopathology impacts the work of the PMHNP.Explain the biological (genetic and neuroscientific); psychological (behavioral and cognitive processes, emotional, developmental); and social, cultural, and interpersonal factors that influence the development of psychopathology.
