Factors that influence reading among my students.

I have been teaching English for almost 9 years in 3 different schools. I had
opportunity to meet different types and level of students. Based on my
experiences, there are 3 major factors that influence reading among the children.
They are socioeconomic factors in the family, collaboration of students and
parents, and teacher-students attitude.

Since I am teaching in a rural area, most of the students are from low level of
income and education. Students who come from wealthy and educated family,
have wider chances to own their favourite books or magazines. In contrast, the
students who are not afford to buy the books, only depend on the reading
materials provided by the teacher in the classroom or from the school library.

The second factor is collaboration of the students and parents. Parents
nowadays are busy to earn their family. As a result, they are paying less
attention to the learning of their children. Some of the students did not get any
supervision or support from the family while doing their homework at home.
There is no learning environment exist in their home. Reading aloud activity is
never done by the parents. There is no moral support or any activity which could
help to boost the children interest in reading. They spend most of their time by
watching television program or for the lucky one, playing computer games
through i-pad or tablet. They prefer to read non-academic reading materials such
as comics and entertainment magazines. A few of them are interested to read
books, magazines or any materials related to academic.

The last factor is teacher-students attitude. Teacher plays a major role to
build reading interest among the students. I found that, some of the teachers
overlook the important of reading. They just let the pupils to read the reading
materials alone without any guidance and they just focusing more on how to
answer the comprehension questions or in another word the teacher only do the
intensive reading. They make the reading session dull and boring. Meanwhile,
the students also do not take any action to enhance their reading skills. They are
suppose to look for another reading materials from outside. Teacher should
encourage them to do extensive reading. Teacher could trigger their interest by
having brainstorming or sharing feeling or thoughts towards the stories or the
books that they have read. These may motivate them to read more and make
the reading activities fun and enjoyable.
