The production of low-cost air quality sensors is a fast growing field, which is offering exciting possibilities for the expert and non-expert alike. Their low cost brings the technology into the financial reach of non-professional communities, for example, schools and interested/concerned individuals. For the research and consultant communities, they bring the possibility of high-density spatial mapping. To be useful, these devices need quality assurance and quality checking (QA/QC) to be undertaken under environmental conditions relevant to their location of deployment. In this talk, Francis will discuss findings from field campaigns conducted in Birmingham, UK and Nairobi, Kenya using the Alphasense OPC-N2 optical particle counter for measuring PM10 and PM2.5. Overall, the OPC-N2 devices were found to measure accurately ambient airborne particle mass concentration provided they were correctly calibrated. Future applications and directions will be discussed.

Increased awareness regarding the adverse effects of pollutants from automobile exhaust gases has been the main driving force for implementation of more and more stringent legislation on automobile exhaust emissions in many Countries. On Board Diagnostic (OBD), regulations in the USA for light and medium duty vehicles (I. C. Engines) are introducing to implement the air quality standard. California and the Federal Government used a driving cycle to certify 1966 and newer models which referred to as either California Cycle or the Federal Test Procedure (FTP). The California Air Resource Board (CARB) and the objective to reduce hydrocarbon (HC) emission caused by malfunction of the vehicles emission control systems adopted the California code of Regulations (CCR) known as OBD – II. The diagnosis is based on the oxygen sensor response time that is the amount of time to complete a switch from rich to lean or lean to rich transition that gives the ability to control the engine at stochiometric Air Fuel ratio. Typical values of lean mean voltage and rich mean voltage are 300 to 600 mill volts respectively. For post-cat O2 sensor, in particular, voltage level checks and heater systems checked and done and the failure thresholds for the post O2 sensor, diagnostic must not be set at a point beyond the failure limit where the catalyst diagnostic is affected.

The main interest of this research was to formulate highly stable, oxygenated water-in-diesel emulsion that gives minimum hazardous exhaust emission. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) are found to be very viable oxygenate amongst other four oxygenated components. The oxygenated W/D emulsion is formulated using 20% FAME, 10% water, and 5% blend of Span 80/Tween 80 and diesel. The properties of this oxygenated fuel emulsion are investigated. Though the viscosity of fuel is found to be increased, it is within the standard limit value. There is an improvement in oxygenated fuel emulsion in burning test, evaporation rate test, and calorific value.

The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
