We’ll dive into the mystic arts used by Java to gain significant performance improvements. Particularly into how Java's dynamic compilers (C1 and C2) work, optimizing our code and transitioning into different stages based on its profile. We'll also look at some of the primitive, complex and aggressive optimization techniques used by Java. Travel to a different realm of Java performance, Dr Strange style, to defeat the monster that is poor Java performance.
Good news, everybody! Guile 2.2 performance notes (FOSDEM 2016)Igalia
By Andy Wingo.
With the new compiler and virtual machine in Guile 2.2, Guile hackers need to update their mental performance models. This talk will give a bit of a state of the union of Guile performance, with an updated overview of the cost of various kinds of abstractions. Sometimes abstraction is free!

Analysis of Haiku Operating System (BeOS Family) by PVS-Studio. Part 2PVS-Studio
This is the second and last part of the large article about analysis of the Haiku operating system. In the first article, we discussed a variety of possible errors all of which one way or another deal with conditions. In this article, we will discuss the remaining analyzer warnings I have selected for you. The bug examples are grouped into several categories.
PostgreSQL as seen by Rubyists (Kaigi on Rails 2022)Андрей Новиков
PostgreSQL has become the most popular RDBMS in the Ruby ecosystem in the last decade. It has a great set of built-in features, including a variety of versatile data types, both common and very specific.
But when we load data from the database to our application code, we're working with Ruby data types: classes from the standard library, Rails, or other gems. So while they can seem to be the same as their PostgreSQL counterparts, they are not absolutely identical, and sometimes that could lead to surprising behavior.
In this talk, I would like to explore the power of data types in PostgreSQL and Ruby and how to work with them properly to use both Ruby and PostgreSQL on 100% of their power!

A Spin-off: Firebird Checked by PVS-StudioAndrey Karpov
We are currently working on a great task of carrying out a detailed comparison of four code analyzers: CppCat, Cppcheck, PVS-Studio and Visual Studio 2013 (i.e. its built-in code analyzer). As a set of materials to base this comparison on, we decided to check at least 10 open-source projects and study the reports from all the analyzers. This is a very labor-intensive task and it is not over yet. However, we have already checked a few projects and can share some of the results with you. And that's what I'm going to do in this article. We'll start with interesting bugs we have managed to find in Firebird with the help of PVS-Studio.
This presentation goes over basic exploitation techniques. Topics include:
- Introduction to x86 paradigms used exploited by these techniques
- Stack overflows including the classic stack smashing attack
- Ret2libc
- Format string exploits
- Heap overflows and metadata corruption attacks
A new client-side framework has been taking the internet by storm, many have already been mesmerised by the power of such a small javascript library. And “what is the name of this fantastic framework?” I hear you ask, “jQuery” is my reply.
jQuery is a robust javascript framework with a very small footprint (18kb minified and GZipped) which makes the complicated aspects of javascript very simple. From traversing the Document Object Model to complex AJAX functionality, jQuery can do it all.
In this session I will introduce you to the basics of jQuery, showing you, through code, how to select and manipulate elements on the page, attach functions to events, implement ajax and more! This is the perfect opportunity to learn about jQuery and how it can make the life of a web developer so much easier, allowing you to focus more on building your application!

Since JDK 9, G1 GC is the default garbage collector (JEP 248). Up until 2017, Monica has shared some G1 GC details, performance tips, and optimizations that help G1's adaptiveness and provided advice on manual tuning.
Since then, G1 has come a long way in improving its adaptiveness. In this session, Monica will cover most of the important optimizations that are delivered from JDK9+ and how they can help your application's responsiveness, throughput, and help with footprint reduction. This is a saga that involves various regions and generations (all pun intended).

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
