3. Mexican And Mexican Americans During The War Of Texas And...
The Unit explains the hardships many Mexican and Mexican Americans have carried and continue to
carry till this day due to their ethnicity and roots. The inequality and struggles rooted from the
invasion of Texas and the wrongful won over Mexican territory by the Euro centric American who
then expanded their border down south unjustly colonizing the Northwest of Mexico. Along with land
many Mexicans who resided in this land were now living in among a strange new government and
environment that was once their land. This began the expectation of having Mexican Americans being
able to assimilate into the Euro Centric culture. These assimilations they were presume to make
caused for many to lose touch of their own culture. Mexican Americans continued to be oppressed
even when serving their own country. Many young Mexican Americans turned to joining the military
due to financial hardships, like many due this day. Although these young men were risking their life
they were still wrongfully treated and racially discriminated while in service. Having men risking their
life for a country and still be discriminated because of their ethnicity shows how progressed the hatred
for Mexicans was developed. The recognition and triumph of many Mexican American soldiers went
unacknowledged due to their ethnicity. Mexican Americans were also labeled as criminals and
murders due to media and their portrayal of Mexicans. Also, the meaning of being called a Chicano/a

4. The s Infamous Dead Dutchman
On Aug. 15, 2013, 22 year old Ugandan kayaker Chagga Bileni paddled into the White Nile s
infamous Dead Dutchman, a Class V rapid aptly named. Bileni did not survive, and no one knows the
reasoning behind Bileni s decision to run the rapid that took his life. The obvious answer and one that
many who knew and loved him took was suicide. After months of researching and interviewing his
closest friends and his doctors, I began to piece together the events leading up to his death and found
the answer was a bit more complicated.
Bileni suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, a personality disorder that alters one s perception of
reality. People with schizophrenia often feel like they re being watched or that others are trying to
harm them. They usually hear things or people who don t exist and say strange or confusing things.
Few people understand the disorder, and many around the world have even never heard of it before.
None of Bileni s loved ones knew he had it, and they could not understand why the once charismatic
and intelligent young man had become distrustful, reclusive and moody. During Bileni s last year alive
his family and mzungu (white foreigner) friends sought help for him, the former through shaman
healing and the latter through a government operated health clinic in Jinja 40 km upstream.
Mental disorders can be debilitating. They affect people s physical health, financial stability and
ability to contribute to their families and communities. The Ugandan

6. Traditional Functions Of Family Essay
Everyone is part of a family. Family, sometimes provide us with a sense of identity and sense of
belonging. The definition of family, according to , is when two or more people are related by marriage
or blood. Sociologists also define family as an institution. It is called an institution as it meets social
needs such as child bearing, basic necessities and economic resources. The traditional type of family is
called a nuclear family. A nuclear family consists of a mum, dad and their children. Although nuclear
families are the norm and also more dominant here in Singapore, there has also been a rise in
alternative families. Alternative families are families that are not part of the social norm, such as a
single parent household, blended families and extended families. A family is also either dead, which
means they are not changing or they are in a state of constant transition. This essay aims to shed light
on a few of the factors and theories that cause a family to be dead or to be transitioning constantly.

Industrialization led to nuclear families replacing extended families. This happened because
industrialization caused social mobility, which led to nuclear families separating from their extended
families to seek jobs and to get economically stable.
Industrialization also caused a decline in fertility and caused the relationship between husband and
wives, child and parent to change. This is due to the economic changes that happened post
industrialization. As the economy increased, husbands wages did not suffice the families expenses and
this led to the women finding jobs outside the home. This caused the women to neglect their
household chores and it also led to both parents neglecting their children (Accampo, Fuchs and

7. Causes Of Tension In Colonial America
Colonial America in the seventeenth century become very independent from England, this caused
tensions politically, socially, religiously and economically. The tensions did not automatically take
place; however, things that weren t considered issues previously became amplified problems as
England tried to tighten their control over the colonies. Having the tensions of social and economic
growth it lead to the Salem Witch trials that occurred in Massachusetts. There was a great amount of
independent growth throughout colonial America, tensions definitely rose as colonial America refused
to allow England to have full control. A major part of the independent growth was the legal system
that America had formed. While they adopted many of the essential elements of the English legal
system, they had major differences in the American legal system (Brinkley, 2012). For example,
punishment was different from England s, instead of prison or the gallows, the Americans took a
different route. The forms of punishment in colonial America was whipping posts, branding iron,
stocks, and the ducking stool (Brinkley, 2012). The colonists thought of law as reflection the divine
will or as a result of natural order, not as an expression of power (Brinkley, 2012). Another growth of
independence was politics in America. The Americans created groups of self government which was
very local and not dependent on the English (Brinkley, 2012). This was not much of an issue for a
while, the English

Wal Mart has underinvested in its stores and staffed them with too few employees to keep their

economy. Challenge four is how Wal Mart s competitors are not standing still by appealing to teen

1.1 Women s branches in the military
Official women s branches were founded by 1943. Not only in the Army they were established, but

involvement in the military run a campaign for the establishment of women s branches in the War
Department. Among these supporters were involved people like Representatives Edith Nourse Rogers
of Massachusetts, Margaret Chase Smith of Maine or First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. (Litoff and Smith

During 1941 to 1942 many women came to Washington D.C. to work for the War Department. Most

(WAC) was established. Thanks to this organization women obtained same titles, ranks and salaries as
men. During the war, about 140 000 women participated in these two organizations. (Litoff and Smith

Even ads for the WAC got better as Colonel Betty Bandel was in charge. She soon gained a
permission to start with her own campaign. (Weatherford 6) According to Doris Weatherford in her
book American Women during World War II: An Encyclopedia, Betty Bandel soon understood that
potential enlistees wanted less glamour and more assurance that sacrificing the best years of their
young lives really would matter. (6)
Unlike other branches, the WAC also accepted black women from the very beginning. However, they
were separated from the white American women and they had their own units. African American
women had to live, be seated and eat in different rooms than white women. Even though this
segregation lasted during the war years, African American women wanted to be part of the war and
were ready to provide their service at any time. (Litoff and Smith

experienced fluctuations and it is not so stable until the beginning of 2013. Starting from this date we
see a clear trend of Swedish Krona depreciation which indicates a decrease of purchasing power of the
currency. If Swedish Krona continues to depreciate it could be difficult for GIOEL to compete in the
Swedish market with local producers that have lower prices and the economic exposure also could be
high.

14. Archimedes Of Syracuse Essay
During the classical period of civilization, many technological advancements became uncovered,
providing the foundations of a modern society that exists currently. The development of food
production, weaponry, architecture, science, and mathematics led to this great progress. People began
to possess critical thinking skills that allowed for more complex ideas and concepts. For instance,
Ancient Greece created Democracy, China instituted large trading networks, and India developed
advanced knowledge of general health. Earth would not possess nearly as many people as it does
today without these significant, milestone discoveries. This ability to think innovatively allowed
humanity to evolve and progress drastically. Archimedes of Syracuse is one of those individuals
responsible for creating and composing concepts that left lasting effects on human civilization with a
profound intellect. Born approximately 287 BC in Syracuse located at Sicily, Greece, he possessed an
interest in solving situations (Editors). This Greek city state was originally established by Corinth as a
colony until a future uprising changed it to a democratic government. In the end, it would eventually
fall under Roman rule. Regardless, his father, Phidias was an astronomer and therefore, surely
influenced the young thinker into a life of math and science. Some historians believe that Archimedes

16. What Makes Airline Save Money Or Maintenance Facilities...
In today s aviation there are many different ways that airlines, airports, or maintenance facilities cut
costs. Maintenance, repair and overhaul(MRO s) facilities might try and find a cheaper material from
overseas to manufacture their parts or they also enter into contracts with international companies to do
the manufacturing for them. Airports make almost half of their revenue from non aeronautical services
and products. Airlines save money by not serving olives in their salads. One of the first ways that
airlines save money is by fuel hedging. Southwest airlines paid $3.4 billion less in fuel costs between
1994 and 2001 doing just this. Fuel hedging is when an airline enters into contracts at the current fuel

Ft Lauderdale is only a short distance from Miami and is not a big inconvenience for customers to
choose this site for their travels. After lights were over the aircrews were noting that most people did
not eat the olives that came in their inflight meals. When this was researched the company found out
that the caterers charged the airlines 60 cents for 4 ingredients and 80 cents for 5 ingredients and that
olive was the fifth ingredient in the salad. So, they decided to take the olive out of the equation and
ended up saving $40,000 a year. Other fuel savings include, Southwest airlines installing winglets,
which help to reduce drag and saving the company 54 million gallons of fuel per year. Or replacing
the 27lb seats with 9lb seats made of titanium, smaller magazines, thinner carpet, and food served in
cardboard boxes helped. Some international airlines only hire female stewardesses since they weigh

non market socialist one, towards a market economy with a socialist orientation. Vietnam is one of the
poorest countries in the world with a Gross Domestic Product of only $300. High levels of population
along with the proper training will allow Vietnam to effectively use its number one resource, people.
Australia plays a key role in assisting Vietnam s economic growth and development through their aid
programs.
Economic reforms are changing Vietnam from an agricultural rich economy to a service industry one.

complete ownership of the firm, even though there are shareholders.
With the institution of Doi Moi the economy of Vietnam has experienced a very strong growth. The
past decade the Gross Domestic Product averaged 7.5%. Throughout the most recent years the growth
has not been as severe but still positive. It was gaining strength as 2000 began but has been slowing
down. There is still a positive growth but not as significant as in the mid 90s. See following chart for
the Real GDP Growth in %.
Towards the end of the 90s many factors accounted for this slow down. Economics reforms were
slowing as well. State owned enterprises and banks were becoming inefficient as well. This, along
with a decrease in demand and consumption, a decrease in foreign and local investing, as well as a
decrease in outputs all contributed to the slow down in economic growth. So, as this slow down
became evident, changes needed were made in order to increase the GDP. In the year 2000, certain
things happened which did in fact raise the growth in real GDP. The world economy was growing and
manufacturing and commodity prices were improving as well.

23. Fire Service Traditions
During the Revolutionary War, fire was used as a weapon for both the colonies and the British. This
demanded suppression efforts during wartime so, many militia members were also firefighters. Some
of the most notable revolutionary figures were also firefighters including: Washington, Hamilton,
Adams, Hancock, and Revere. However, during this time fire companies were often hostile to each
other. Volunteer fire companies, most infamously in Philadelphia, were heavily influenced and ran by
gangs for example the Killers or the Rats. Many times, Fire companies would often engage in a mob
like fight to see who would put out a fire before actually putting the fire out, which led to an overall
blaze and often counteracted the fire company s arrival. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
fire service holds the profession in very high regards and keeps true many unique and long established
traditions. Two specific heritages, both of Celtic descent, became a heavy influence the fire service s
traditions: the Scottish and the Irish. The most notable tradition from the two Celtic heritages is the
bagpipes often found today during U.S, firefighter funerals. This originated sometime around the Irish
Potato Famine when large amounts of Irish men and women emigrated from Ireland to America.
During this period, the Irish faced heavy discrimination and often could not find work, however many
were able to become firefighters as no one else was willing to take these jobs. During this time with
the lack of practiced safety, death was very likely in the fire service. At Irish firefighter funerals, the
bagpipes were always played to send home the fallen firefighter, it wasn t too long before families and
friends of non Irish firefighters began asking for the bagpipes to be played for fallen heroes due to the
dignified atmosphere the bagpipes created at the funerals. The Fireman s Ringing of the Bell is a
second American instituted tradition. The ceremonial ringing of the bell in memory of those who died
in the line of duty is an age old tradition of the Fire Service. The bell, instituted sometime around the
1850 s, was long used to signal an emergency, as an early form as a siren, and used to mark the end of
an emergency and a return to quarters (the fire station). The final tolling of the bell at a firefighter s
funeral is to signal the last alarm the firefighter faces. In memory of all who died during the attacks on
September 11, 2001, the bell is rung five times in series of fives (5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5). When this series is
multiplied out, it equals 3,125 which is in close proximity to the number of people who died as result
of the September 11th attacks. Finally, a third longstanding tradition of the fire service, which has
been changing recently,

24. Siddons ; S Androgynous Rosalind Costume In Shakespeare s...
Because Siddons s androgynous Rosalind costume was so strongly criticized, it is somewhat
surprising that the actress chose to play a role as iconic as Hamlet in an outfit that at least one
spectator found to be ambiguously gendered. Nonetheless, Siddons perhaps had reason to believe that
her Hamlet would be better received than her performances as Rosalind. It was clearly a role that she
performed with some frequency early in her career, and she may have felt that it was better suited for
her talents as a primarily tragic actress than a comic breeches role in which Jordan could easily
outshine her. Furthermore, while Siddons s original Rosalind costume differed significantly from the
standard set by other actresses, her Dublin Hamlet costume may not have been that different from
what other actors wore to play Hamlet in the early Romantic era. In fact, the costume depicted in
Hamilton s sketch also resembles the costume shown in Sir Thomas Lawrence s famous painting of
Kemble as Hamlet. According to most stage histories of the play, Kemble was the first actor to wear
period dress while playing Hamlet rather than the modern court dress that Garrick and other actors had
worn before him. Alan R. Young explains,
Kemble broke with tradition and wore a costume suggestive of Elizabethan dress, the so called
Vandyke costume, that included [...] a sleeved doublet, trunk hose, tights, and a lace collar, with a
baldric to support a sword. To this he added for crucial scenes the

the dictator of Argentina from 1946 to 1955. He came into power by helping with a coup d état to over

Research and Development and Financial Performance of UK Manufacturing Firms
UK manufacturing firms have many factors which influence their financial performance. Research and

financial improvement in all businesses due to the extensive variety of business types. Research and

process of bringing these products onto the market. A manufacturing firm, which generally refers to a

further processed materials, by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Research and Development can also be used by small shops and retailers, by means of
questionnaires, staff suggestion boxes, feedback forms and market research etc.. This low amount of
Research and Development is typically normal, as small shops rely more on customer service, niche
markets, and reasonable quality and price products.
Research and Development can often be a very risky process, since much money can be spent on ideas
that will never be commercialised. In product oriented firms, such as manufacturing companies have
many factors which affect their financial performance. Research and Development is a useful way of
improving profits, if there is significant funding, to employ scientists and researchers to produce and
develop the most technically advanced products to date, which can then be marketed and turned into
cash cows or stars. Also Research and Development could develop new methods to produce existing
products, to lower average costs. However this depends on the skill of the scientists and researchers,
because despite how much money is pumped into the Research and Development department, without
ideas, invention and innovation the business will have no rewards. Furthermore, even if Research and
Development does
its job, this will be worthless if the manufacturing firm has too specialised equipment, which is unable

that will affect these individuals are neuropsychological deficiencies and disadvantaged environments

deficiencies which are people born into an adverse family. These families will be unsupportive
because they fall into one or multiple independent variables such as the socioeconomic status, single

factors such as the age of the mother and single parent will more than likely have less attention given

skills. In these two variables, the parents or parent will need to take responsibility to provide for their
family in which they will not finish high school and have a low socioeconomic status increasing the
likelihood of criminal behavior for the offspring. The research shows that boys from broken homes of

The 1996 Education Act defines a child as having special educational needs (SEN) when they have a
learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for them (section 312).
This involves those who have greater difficulty learning and/or disabilities that prevent them from
accessing educational facilities. This represents approximately 15.4% of pupils in schools in England
(Department of Education, 2015). A key question that surrounds this area is whether it is better for
these children to be included in mainstream schooling or whether they should be excluded (Warnock
Norwich, 2010). However this is not a straightforward issue, there are wider needs, like social class,
that the classification of SEN often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each field has its own doxa individual rules and conventions that one can then adopt (often
unknowingly). According to the doxa, each person can be ascribed their legitimate position within the
field (Bourdieu Eagleton, 1992). This can contribute to the habitus . At its simplest, habitus is who we
are our internalised dispositions and practices which we act according to (Thomas Loxley, 2007). The
habitus expresses itself in all situations of life, from bodily movements to conscious thoughts (Webb,
Schirato, Danaher, 2002). These three concepts are mutually constituted and are what subsequently
brings about inequalities. According to Bourdieu (1977), school s act as a social selector, they favour
particular cultural capitals. He called this reproduction where a child s habitus fits with the doxa of a
school, they have an advantage and are able to engage with school easier (Bourdieu Passeron, 1977),
whilst excluding others, like SEN pupils.
According to Bernstein (1973), social inequalities are transmitted through schools. He noted a clear
communication difference between working and middle class children, which is then echoed in
schools. Schools (often implicitly) adopt an educational code which effects everything from teacher
student interactions to the teacher s control over learning. Bernstein (1971) distinguished between two

would later become the preface to his epic Milton: a Poem. Blake puts emphasis on the narrator s
diction, syntax, and tone to delineate the narrator s thoughts and feelings that complement his purpose
in this poem. The diction in this poem is largely neutral, if not informal. Blake uses common
vocabulary; however, he refrains from slang and colloquial diction. The narrator s language is strong,
yet it is also lyrical as it was fit to be adapted into an anthem called Jerusalem by Sir Hubert Parry in
1916 (Dibble). The poem is written in first person, and there is no alternate dialogue. The narrator s
diction is in a language that can be understood by the common Englishman. This is pertinent as the

Have you ever seen those adorable animated commercial that are played often in the movie theater
before the movie starts. I remember liking those commercials and considering them pretty adorable.
Although as I turned older, I realized that these simple animated cartoons shared important concepts
that you can put into your life. One of the concepts portrayed in the cartoon was teamwork. The
cartoons tended to show that if you don t work together, something will go very wrong. In real life I
find that this is reasonably true. Teamwork is important to accomplish something; the only issue is that
if you don t use teamwork, something noticeably upsetting or wrong doesn t always happen like it
portrays in the animate cartoons. Like the teamwork it portrayed in those cartoons, I learned that while
during my service. Among other communication qualities I learned teamwork. Other concepts of
communication that we, as a group, identified while doing our service project include different types
of communication, different personalities, and gender roles. I will talk about the types of
communication first, then teamwork, personality will be next, and lastly gender roles. Those aren t the
only concepts of communication, however we just decided to focus on those ones.

Serotonin signaling in the central nervous system produces hyophagia through its effects on the

(Carroll 122) could be the motto of Suzanne Collins bestseller The Hunger Games. Published in 2008,
the novel tells the dystopian story of Katniss, a young girl who has to participate in a fight to death

Alice s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, first published in 1865. Mostly known as a

The capriciousness of the Queen s decisions becomes even more obvious when Alice attends a trial
where the Knave of Hearts is accused for having stolen some tarts which the Queen had made. Not
only that the reason for this charge seems ridiculous but when finding no evidence the Queen just
overrules the jury and the judge, which again underlines the oppressive power she possesses. Both
novels, The Hunger Games and Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, therefore succeed in depicting
arbitrary measures and brutality as a way to portray government oppression, personified by the
Gamemakers and the Queen of Hearts. Being confronted with this oppression, both girls think about
which place they take and self reflect their identities. According to Erik Erikson, an important
developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst, identity formation is one of the key tasks of
adolescence. (Beck, Earl 77). Relating to that, both novels deal with the fundamental topic of children
s development. Katniss, although being only age 16, can be described as comparatively mature, at first
glance. Since her father died in a mine accident, she has to replace him in being the breadwinner of the
family. On closer examination, however, one discovers Katniss immaturity: she doesn t seem to be
