The document describes Harry Allinson's process for creating a Ukrainian-themed poster experiment. He began with a teal background to represent the Ukrainian flag. Text reading "Ukraine" in Ukrainian was added, along with a silhouette of the historic Pechersk Lavra Orthodox monastery. Threshold effects were applied to the silhouette for visual interest. The teal background was then replaced with a Ukrainian flag created using selection and fill tools. Additional Ukrainian text was added at the bottom providing information. Harry notes that including cultural symbols and limited vibrant colors aligned with his audience's preferences found through surveys.

2. Process
At the start, I used a linear burn overlay of flowers on a white t-shirt template because the
flowers made the shirt more summery and that was what I was gong for because most of
my audience, in a recent survey, answered that they most preferred vibrant colours when
it comes to image styles. After that, I proceeded to edit the colour of the flowers via
editing the hue & saturation because it looked more aesthetically pleasing since their were
there were more of a variety of colours on the t shirt. The way I changed the colour on one
half of the t shirt’s colour was by using the lasso tool hence it is the most efficient tool to
do the job of selecting certain areas of an image.
Then I added a black fade at the bottom of the t-shirt by selecting the gradient tool and
dragging it upward from the bottom of the t shirt with a clipping mask on the layer so that
the fade is only on the t shirt layer to draw the attention up to the top of the t-shirt
because it made the t shirt have more punch about it since there was more satisfying
visual effects on it.
After that, I added a slick overlay from google to the text to by clicking the blending mode
tab and selecting darken because it blended and overlapped well with the shirts flowers
below the text. Finally, I applied grunge effects to the t shirt by using the brush tool with
blending modes such as overlay and soft light. After the brushing on the shirt, I lowered
the visibility of the brush strokes by decreasing the opacity of the layer of the layer so that
stokes wouldn't be too obnoxious and so that it didn’t make the shirt look too grubby.
3. Process
In the beginning, I start with a teal background because I was planning on doing a Ukrainian theme for my poster and the colour
blue is in the flag so I thought that I would start with a blue colour to link with the colour theme of the flag. I chose a Ukrainian style
because I thought that it would be an interesting subject for one of my experiments since most people from Britain see products
from English speaking countries the majority of the time so therefore when they see products like this, although it may not be in
their language, it will still stand out because of the overall visual flavour and surprise of the posters styles and themes. After adding
the background, I decided to add text at the top for the title which said, “Ukraine” in Ukrainian because the font of the language
gave off a eastern European vibe, which I knew would go well with what I would add in the future from this point of production. This
happened by me selecting and then placing the text box in Photoshop because it is the quickest and easiest way of adding text
layers on Photoshop and then pasting in the translated version of, “Ukraine” into the text box cause the text to say “Україна0.”
After that, I decided to add a silhouette of a great landmark in Ukraine called Pechersk Lavra, which is a Orthodox
Christian monastery with beautiful spires. I decided to add this because it looks amazing and I figured that it would
be an appropriate touch to add since it is historically very symbolic of the religious culture of Ukraine, which was a
big part of shaping Ukraine as a country. After adding the yellowed silhouette of the monastery, I thought I would
experiment with the image by add a threshold to it by clicking on images, adjustments and then threshold, where I
used a little slider to increase or decrease the amount of threshold, which was useful because then I could easily find
the right amount threshold for my product. I decided to use this threshold effect on the monastery image because it
looked appealing and it also made the poster look more professional as well.
Then I replaced the teal background by deleting the layer with the background on it and then adding a Ukrainian flag
that I made in Photoshop with the rectangular marquee tool and the paint tool because using these tools were very
efficient at filling in rectangles with colour because all I had do with them was to drag the rectangular marquee tool
on a empty layer in the centre of the composition and the fill it in with the paint tool on the top and bottom halves
of the A4 spread.
At the bottom of the poster I added texts by placing text boxes in Photoshop which translates to ,“Pechersk Lavra”
and, “Ukrainian Poster By Harry Allinson”. I added these texts with the Ukrainian language and characters because I
wanted to enhance the atmospheric presents of the Ukrainian vibe via the visuality of the poster so that it would get
my audience to be intrigued by the products style. Also, I think that my audience will enjoy this product, because it
has limited colours and high vibrancy, which is what my audience wanted because I asked them questions on my
survey, on a website called survey monkey, which was useful for getting information about my audience because it
told me my audiences visual preference because I asked them questions on it.
4. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• I will certainly use symbolic references to cultures and religions, similarly to when I used the religious monastery in the Ukrainian poster
to solidify the cultural aspect of the poster. I’m going to do Reggae products for my final major project and in Reggae there is a lot of
Ethiopian flags in the products because that flag links with the religion, social movement and culture of Rastafarianism, which is the
largest religion indigenous to Jamaica. In my final I will defiantly use references to Rasta, like including the flag and the lion which is on
the Ethiopian flag. I will do this because it is important to include cultural styles within genres because then it is more appealing to the
wider audiences because more people will be able to connect with product on a more personal, cultural and even religious level.
• It is important that I include vibrant colours in products because when I carried out my surveys online, I found out that my audience's
preference when it comes to image style, was primarily vibrancy. Therefore I have decided that in the future when producing my final
products, I will use a lot of saturated colours because I know that my audience will enjoy them more then if I were to make the colours
dull because I know that my audience isn't into that style hence they told me in one of the survey questions.
• I personally know that one element of my experiments that I will most likely include in my final will be experimentation because even
when it comes to the finale, I still experiment along the way, especially when I get stuck because sometime I have an outcome that was
better then the originally idea that I began with at the start before going into the production. Even though if you don't stick to the plan
(experimentation), in production, it will be more time consuming, you still may have better change at making a better product because
if you experiment, then you broaden your progression of production, which could make your creative because their might be different
styles going into it which would make the products potentially more creative if there is a different variety of styles going into something
the outcome will probably be something surprising.
• Similarly to the Ukrainian posters font on the text, I will use text in my own products that go well with the genre because it looks much
better then if you used text that isn't from the genre on the same product hence a text's font is designed to enhance and go along
with a mood, style and/or genre. I will do this by using reggae styled fonts so that it fits the mood of the product well thus making the
product much more sellable to my audience.
