EXPERIMENTS

 = an operation or procedure carried out under
controlled conditions in order to discover an
unknown effect or law, to test or establish a
hypothesis, or to illustrate a known law (Merriam-
Webster, 2016)
 provide insight into cause-and-effect by
demonstrating what outcome occurs when a
particular factor is manipulated (Wikipedia)

1. Association (e.g. when A increases, B
decreases)
2. Time priority (for A to be the cause, it must
come first)
3. Nonspurious relationship (no third factor
influencing both, not fluke of data)
4. Rationale (plausible, logical explanation)

• Maturation (change over time, e.g. fatigue, growing older)
• History (external factors change, e.g. flight disaster
between measurements changes attitudes)
• Testing (subjects learn from repeated testing)
• Instrumentation (non-reliable measurement)
• Selection bias (subjects assigned to the different
experimental groups differ in something outside of the
experimental condition, e.g. age, sex): RANDOM

Experimenting in with tourism research
