This document summarizes the preliminary results of a study on the effects of hotel engagement with daily deal websites on employment patterns and employee well-being. The study utilized qualitative methodology and interviews with hotel employers. Preliminary results found that daily deals have transitioned from a desperation tactic to an online distribution channel for hotels. Hotels also experience hidden costs of promotions and the importance of upselling customers. For employees, daily deals can impact areas beyond just food and beverage, and employment is impacted. Customers using daily deals are disloyal and savvy but there is little cannibalization between regular and daily deal customers.
