2. INITIAL IDEAS/INSPIRATION
• We focused on creating a space through audio.
• Wanted to focus on a busy space.
• Wanted a location that was distinct and relatable.
• Eventually inspired by personal experiences on public transport, specifically trains.
• Decided to work with an idea about overhearing strange conversations on public
transport.
• No central protagonist or narrative in a similar way to An Optical Poem.
3.
4. RECORDING PROCESS
• Used a shotgun microphone and zoom on the station platform.
• One long recording walking through the station.
• Several other recordings of specific sounds.
• After the draft edit, we added some voices into the piece to tie into the core idea of
overhearing conversations.
• Using volunteer voice actors for the parts.
5. FILMING
• Cinematography heavily inspired by Salaryman, looking for patterns and shapes in
the environment.
• Focus on finding vanish point shots.
• Initial edit was recorded over two days on the platforms at Sheffield and Barnsley
using an XF-100.
• Recorded the video separately to the sound, the audio is unaltered in the edit.
• Issue with locations was that it wasn’t possible to bring a tripod onto the platform,
negatively impacted the final product.
6. SELF ANALYSIS
• We feel that our final product matches our initial intention and idea, however there
is still room for improvement.
• Helped develop our sense of cinematography and how to shoot different
environments.
• Not an idea everyone might find interesting.
• First project in an experimental style.
• We feel that the influence of Salaryman shows in the cinematography.
• In the future we should look to more creative ideas, but ones that allow us to
produce a very high quality production.
