Experiences vs
Account of Past
Events
PRESENT PERFEC VS SIMPLE
PAST
Experiences
• As revised in a previous activity, it is possible
to describe accomplishments or
experiences as in the next examples:
• I have lived in Hidalgo since I was born.
• My mom has been a tailor for about 20
years.
• My dad has worked in the US since 1989.
• My parents have been married for 40
years.
Experiences or the lack of them
• To focus on another perspective, we may consider an experience or the lack of it
as in the next examples:
• I have ever lived abroad, but I have never bought a house there.
• My mom has ever tried to learn English, but she has never gotten it.
• My dad has ever worked as a driver, but he has never owned a transportation
company.
• My sister has ever made cakes, but she has never participated in a cooking
contest.
• My friends have ever gotten drunk, but they have never had an accident.
Questions
about
experiences
• We may also ask people about their experiences:
• Have you ever lost a bet?
• Have you ever traveled abroad?
• Has you best friend ever drunk excessively?
• Has your girl/boyfriend ever broken a rule?
• Have your parents ever punished you?
• Two answers are possible:
• Yes, I have. - Yes, s/he has. - Yes, they have.
• No, I haven’t – No, s/he hasn’t. – No, they
haven’t.
Experiences
vs Account of
Past Events
• If your answer was ‘Yes...’, the possible
following question is ‘How was it?’ or
‘Really, what happened?’ and you are
expected to start telling a quick story or
anecdote as in the next example.
• A: Have you ever borrowed money
from a stranger?
• B: Yes, I have. Once I forgot my
wallet at home; I went to work. I
took the public transportation, and
when I got to my destination, I
realized I didn’t bring my wallet. I
felt very ashamed, but I saw one of
my neighbors, so I borrowed $10..
Later, on that same day, I went to her
house and paid her back.
Notice
•I have ever borrowed money from a stranger.
•I have never stolen money.
Experiences are expressed using the present perfect and the complements ‘ever’ or ‘never’:
•I forgot my wallet.
•I went to work,
•I saw my neighbor.
•I borrowed $10.
An account of past events is described using the simple past:
