Louis Tomlinson called up J-14 for an exclusive heart-to-heart!
W
hen J-14 picked up the
phone to talk to Louis
Tomlinson, he had just
gotten off stage at a concert in
Belfast, Ireland. “How you doing,
love?” he asked our editor, Lindsey.
He sounded winded and tired, but
upbeat. We told him how much we
were loving Made in the A.M. (1D’s
newest album), and Louis’ tone
suddenly shifted. “We really
wanted to make songs that will
resonate,” he confessed, sounding
more serious. It is, after all, 1D’s
last album for an unforeseen
amount of time — and it seemed
like we had hit on an emotional
topic. “We’ve been through some
testing times over the last year,”
he shared. From then on, Louis
continued to open his heart about
everything. Read on for more!

Q:Did you approach the making
of this album differently
because you knew you weren’t
going to be touring with the songs?
A:We’ve always written with the
intention to write big, stadium
songs, because we knew we were
going on tour and we knew we were
going to perform them live. But this
time, actually, was a little bit more
interesting because you could write
some more intimate songs and, you
know, maybe less anthemic and get
more personal. I think that we got
that across on this album.
Q:Liam hinted that “Perfect”
may be about Taylor Swift.
Since you and Harry wrote it, can
you clarify the song’s inspiration?
What does the really song mean
to Harry?
A:In reality, everybody writes from
personal experience, that’s just
what people do, so it’s kind of open
to interpretation to a certain degree.
People can believe what they want.
I think it was important for us to not
write a generic, typical, really Romeo-
romantic love song and we kind of
wanted to play with that and make it
different, so the idea behind the song
is not too serious. It’s just saying,
“Everything’s great for tonight so let’s
just enjoy it.” We’re not saying we’re
going to get married or anything. So
you know, the song is pretty loose.
Q:Where’s the craziest or
weirdest place you guys
came up with an idea for a song?
A:Um, what’s the craziest or
weirdest place? It kind of just
comes to you whenever, you know?

You might just be walking in the
street or sitting on the toilet and you’ll
just write a note in your phone and
go, “Wow! That just came to me.” It’s
kind of random, as it comes to you.
Q:You’ve never had another
artist featured on a song.
Is there a reason why?
A:Honestly, we like the idea of a
collaboration, but it’s hard to
find the right
fit. We know
our fan base
and we have
a particular
sound, so
it’s hard to
establish
who’d be
right. We
don’t want
wit to sound

Q:“Home” was
released for
the EP and you
helped write it. Is
there a reason it
didn’t make the
full album?
A:That was one
of the first
songs we wrote for
the album and me and
Liam spent three or
four days bouncing
off a few different
ideas. Come to think
of it, I don’t know [why
it didn’t make the
album]. We liked it.
Q:What lasting
impression do
you want the album
to leave on fans?
A:We want our
fans to relate to
the songs. Like
“History,” for example,
it’s an important song.
We’re trying to say to
the fans, “We’re a part
of this together.” The fans have
gotten us to where we are, so it’s
all a tribute to them, really, to say
we’d be nowhere without them!
Q:And lastly, what can you
tell Directioners who are
scared that the end of One
Direction is in the near future?
A:Well, it’s pretty normal that
bands take a break. We’ve
made five albums in five years, so
if in our 6th year, we don’t make an
album, it’d be alarming. But if you
look at other bands, it’s really not
that weird [to take a break]. Our
intentions are to come back and
make another album, but at the
moment, we’re liking the idea of
no pressure, no responsibilities
— just enjoying time with friends
and family. The fans have put us
where we are, and we’re thankful!
