Competition, which had a record number of participants. The foundation also
represented South Sudan in the African Spelling Bee 2023 and has identified focus
areas for sustainability, including capacity building, community engagement, and
digital transformation.

The Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) is a non-profit
organisation that promotes education and socio-economic development.
EFSS provides education, leadership development, and community-building
initiatives to support individuals and marginalised communities through
grassroots activities encouraging literacy, community peace, tolerance, and
development.
We visualize a society where everyone has the opportunity for a high-quality
life, including but not limited to education, employment, shelter, health, food,
and clothing, rich cultural offerings, and the ability to give themselves and
connect with their community.

To contribute to improving the living standard of the communities of the Republic of South Sudan through
community mobilisation, capacity building, advocacy, and strengthening of livelihoods.

world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.

6. Executive
Director’s Message
The Excellence Foundation for South Sudan had
a successful 2023, achieving several milestones,
including mentoring 16 teachers, engaging 16
volunteer trainers, and positively impacting 3,500
pupils and students in Juba through various
programs such as the Personal Development
Masterclasses and the Juba Primary Schools Mini
Competition. The foundation also debuted at the
African Spelling Bee 2023, representing South
Sudan with pride and honour.
Looking ahead to 2024, the foundation remains
committed to its mission of fostering excellence
in education and personal growth among the
young people of South Sudan. It is dedicated to
nurturing, inspiring, and empowering the youth to
shape a brighter future for themselves and the
nation.

Personal Development Masterclasses, a
virtual training program was
implemented from May to December
2023 to empower youth, with 16
volunteer trainers leading biweekly
sessions on 17 topics.
The program saw 1,700 registrations and
1,272 attendees, significantly increasing
from 385 attendees the previous year.

Juba Primary Schools Mini Competition, a
spelling, speed challenge quiz, speech and
academic debate contest, was held for pupils
from 14 schools in Juba, South Sudan, with
3,500 attendees, 294 active participants, and
over 14 team coaches.
The competition encouraged children to
explore English, expand their vocabulary, and
improve their communication, presentation,
and comprehension skills.

• The South Sudan National Spelling
Bee project sent a team of five
participants, including two
teachers and three spellers, to
represent South Sudan in the 6th
African Spelling Bee competition
in Kampala, Uganda, where they
gained valuable experience,
learned from other cultures, and
received gold medals and
certificates of participation.
• The project promoted cultural
exchange and exposed the pupils
to a broader educational
experience, positively impacting
the participants and promoting
literacy and education in South
Sudan.

Judges
Envisioning
• The Teachers & Judges Envisioning was to orient
teachers, judges, and heads of schools on the Juba
Primary Schools Mini Competition, its goals, rules,
and requirements, and to encourage them to form
debate, speech, and reading clubs in their schools.
• We engaged 15 trained teachers, heads of schools,
and 05 adjudicators who understood the JPSMC and
were equipped to guide their students in preparing
for the competition.

a three-year bursary to help her

• Three pupils escorted by two
teachers made up the delegation,
which was the South Sudan National
Spelling Bee team that participated
in the prestigious African Spelling
Bee for the first time to mark a

spelling competition history.
• The spellers were awarded gold
medals and participation certificates.
