The Girl
Once upon a time there was a young Vietnamese girl who was beautiful and loved by everyone,
especially her grandmother. When she turned fifteen, her grandmother gave her a bright white
silk Ao Dai. It was the most elegant dress in all of Vietnam, so she wore it to school everyday.
Even though every other girl worn similar white Ao Dai s, she was given the name Little White
Bride. One day before school, her mother asked her to bring her grandmother the honeycomb cake
they made the night before, but she knew the journey would be dangerous. Her mother warned her
of the hostile men that would go to any lengths to get a girl to get into a van with them, so men
in China could have beautiful young brides. However the girl was brave, maybe a little too
brave, and shrugged it off. So she left her house with the cake and her schoolbooks and started her
walk into the country. Her grandmother lived only fifteen minutes away near the rice fields, so
she didn t feel a need to rush. As she walked past an abandoned field, a young boywho looked about
the same age as her was riding up behind her on a rickety old bike. He was coming straight towards
her with a surprised look on his face. He slowed down and said You know how dangerous it is for a
girl of your age and beauty to be out here all alone? Yes, but I m not worried, I ve only run into you
so far and you don t look scary. Plus I m already half way to my grandmother s house. Is the house

Analyzing Stafford s Poem Traveling Through The Dark
Traveling Through the Dark
Stafford furtively conceals the profound meaning of his poem behind a story of the narrator, who
stops alongside the road to care for a deer. The genius behind poem is better understood when the
superficial meaning is expressed deeply.
Driving down a narrow mountain road, traveling through the dark, the narrator of the poem
encounters a deer. The deer is actually dead on the edge of the Wilson River road. The traveler
decides to send the deer over the edge of the canyon, because to swerve might make more dead.
This line indicates that if he fails or swerves in his decision, the deer could cause an accident on the
narrow road that might cost more lives.
The narrator prepared with this purpose, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The personified car is expectantly awaiting his decision, eager to get moving again. The wilderness
takes on human abilities also, silently witnessing the outcome it knows must be, but wishing it was
otherwise. As the narrator contemplates all of this, the taillights of the car illuminate him in their
red light. This is reflective of the heightened emotions he is experiencing, but also brings to mind
the bloody fate of the deer and her unborn fawn.
The narrator thinks hard for us all and proceeds with the task he had committed to since the
beginning. He pushes the deer and her unborn fawn over the edge into the river.
There is much more to this poem than its literal story. The title, along with the story itself,
suggests man s overlook for nature. People seem to travel through oblivious to the consequences
of their actions. The driver who killed the deer is an example of this theme. He was also traveling
through the dark, as the deer was a recent killing. The fact that he left it in the middle of the road,
with no further thought for it or anyone else behind him, implies his dark nature.
The main theme of the poem however, is the sadness and misfortune that accompanies everyone s
journey through

The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman
The book, The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman draws attention to some very good points
concerning globalization and the world economy today. Friedman emphasizes the status of
America today in relation to the other countries of the world. As I looked at the things in which he
warned about or highlighted, I realized the importance of this issue. He talks about a few aspects in
which need to be kept competitive in order for America to retain their current standing in the world
market.
First of all, Friedman talks about the different levels of globalization. There are 3 different time
periods in which the society has differed and changed, bringing us to where we are today.
Globalization 1.0, which took place from 1492 to 1800, was the ... Show more content on

This is the area in which I think Friedman s theory is slightly flawed. He seems to say that there
was almost no sort of international communication, relation, or business before the discovery of the
new world.
Following globalization 1.0 came 2.0. This was the time from 1800 to 2000. There were many
advances in this period that drastically changed the world in which we live today. Communication,
transportation, and growing trade markets influenced and brought us to multinational companies,
which greatly shrunk the world down to yet another smaller size.
Today, we are in the globalization 3.0 phase, in which communication (mostly through the Internet)
and transportation are at a level in which distance hardly poses any problem at all. Another very
large issue in this era is the concept of outsourcing. This is the idea that if an item can be produced
more cheaply outside of the company/region, it will be. The market will go to the cheapest source
of production.
Many of the countries or cultures that have been transformed by the flattening of the world have
been affected because of their upper hand through education. We as Americans have gotten used to
being elite over the years due to our high economic standing and educational excellence, but in
recent years, the educational agenda has increased in other countries, while America s education
has seemed to decline. This is an area in which we need to

Drugs And Drugs
A. Introduction About $800 Billion worth of drugs are sold every year. The drug industry has
affected agriculture in various ways. While some may think that drug industry has done good for
the agriculture industry. It has also had repercussions. Drugs not only affect our ecosystem, it also
affects us human beings, animals, and plants. It s similar to a cycle, we start off with the
ecosystem, which then leads to plants, then the animals, to human beings. If the drugindustry is
affecting the whole agriculture industry it s affecting the whole world. Drugs affectour ecosystem by
the pollution, drugs affect plant growth, drugs affect animals development, and all of these affect
what we has humans eat on a daily basis. If something goes wrong because of the drugs that the
farmers are using, at the end it will affect humans beings that have either consumed or inhaled; and
it will be corrupting the whole agriculture industry which could ve been prevented.
B. Drug History A little bit of history of how marijuana began to go high in demand. Marijuana
was one of the first drugs that became popular. In 1616 tobacco was known as the expert item
because of Jamestown. Spaniards found the natives in the West Indies using the tobacco plant. The
spaniards then took some of the tobacco seeds to Europe, which then ended up spreading to other
countries and around the Mediterranean Sea. The person who discovered this was, John Rolfe. He
then began to do a test trial

Magwitch s Manipulations of Pip in Great Expectations Essay
Magwitch s Manipulations of Pip in Great Expectations
In Great Expectations, Charles Dickens criticizes the motivation of the lower classes to rise to the
level of wealth and education held by the upper classes by showing the extent to which Pip is
exploited by Magwitch to meet these goals. To meet the expectations of the gentleman, Pip must
leave his family and any possibility of earning his living in order to satisfy the educational and
societal demands of this standard. Magwitch, a social deviant, hopes to prove his viability by
using his unfortunate circumstances to produce a gentleman entirely by his own effort. Magwitch
exhibits Pip to the world as a gentleman who is not hardened by labor, but he does so by his ... Show

The title of gentleman therefore denotes one who passes his time idly without and obligation or
responsibility besides remaining socially amiable. The emergence of the middle class in the
nineteenth century allowed people not of noble birth to enter the ranks of gentility. Becoming an
educated and morally noble gentleman had come within the reach of those who had previously
been excluded. Industry made it possible for someone of the working class to elevate his social
position through his own efforts. This new definition of the gentleman had a great appeal among
the emerging middle class because high birth, the traditional passport to recognition as a gentleman,
could be side stepped at least in theory (Platz 152). This new opportunity created a split between the
traditional upper classes and the newly established English bourgeoisie. Dickens recognized the
paradoxical aspiration toward the position of an idle gentleman through labor. Obtaining the
appearance of a gentleman became more important than the means by which the facade is
constructed. Platz writes, Dickens Great Expectations can be interpreted as an attempt to dismantle
both the legitimacy and symbolic authority of the gentleman (162). Pip deceives himself by

Gorham Family Structure
Hello everyone, I live in Gorham Maine. The maps indicate that ACS 2013 in Gorham, has a
total of 2,156 households with 1,176 of those to be married couples. Of those 539 households
with married couples have one or more children living at home under the age of 18 (Social
Explorer, 2013). My family household is myself, my husband of 23 years, and our 15 year old
daughter. We have a 21 year old daughter who lives on her own currently in Colorado. I think the
changes in familyhas to do with how families have changed to now recognize families of same sex
couples. This is a huge leap from the 1950 s model of a nuclear family of husband, wife, and their
children (New York University Department of Sociology, 2013). Society as a

How Did Bob Dylan Impact The Civil Rights Movement
The Nobel Prize for Literature represents an award that should be taken with great pride and
fulfillment. This award has only been granted 109 times to 113 fortunate literates between the
years of 1901 to 2016 (All Nobel Prizes in Literature). Artists whose literature has had an
unbelievable impact on people are the type of artists to be considered for the Nobel Prizein
Literature. Bob Dylan became awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016 for having created
new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition (All Nobel Prizes in Literature).

Bob Dylan uses his talent to influence American history and culture, changing literature forever.
The Civil Rights movement will be remembered as a mass popular movement that enforced that
African Americans should have the same access to and opportunities for the basic privileges and
rights of a white U.S. citizen (Scholastic). It was the unexpected accomplishments from the
movement that shocked many generations. Bob Dylan impacted the civil rights movement in many
ways through his music. Not to mention, The Atlantic states, He wrote that song to tap into that
movement, calling out writers, critics, senators, congressmen, mothers and fathers to all step up
and embrace change (The Atlantic). To put it differently, Bob Dylan was communicating with
artists everywhere, encouraging them to express how they were feeling and that they were not
alone. Dylan specifically calls out those people at the beginning of every stanza, and the rest of
the verse accommodates the reasons for why he is calling them out to help. All sorts of
commodities were going on during the 1960s; therefore, Bob Dylan and his music were very much
a part of that (The Atlantic). His music

Kinetic Energy Research Paper
Energy is what we need to accomplish physical actions such as walking, lifting a glass, heating
water, or powering a TV (nmsea). You use energy for everything. Energy can always be conserved;
you cannot create nor destroy energy. Something you can do with energy is you can transfer energy
between objects (livescience). Energycan come in different forms. The two most common different
forms are potential and kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, some examples of
that include downhill motion of a roller coaster cart, rolling a bowling ball, and the motion of a
bike. Kinetic energy has two other types of kinetic energy, thermal/heatenergy and sound waves.

based on constant pressure and then measurements based on constant volume. They have made a
bomb Calorimetry. A calorimeter is the object measuring the heat transferred to or from an object
(physics classroom). They have made a bomb Calorimetry; they mainly use them in the bigger
labs. It has nothing to do with a bomb, the mainly fill the chamber with oxygen gas and the fuel. A
wire is put in the system to electrically ignite the contents to perform the study. A jacket of water
and a thermometer surrounds the reaction chamber, the heat released the chamber warms the water,
letting the people doing the lab determine the energy that is being released (physics classroom).
Another type of calorimeter is the coffee cup calorimeter. They take a Styrofoam cup with a lid.
The cup is half way filled with water and a thermometer through the lid. When the reaction occurs
in the cup, the heat will be absorbed but the water. The temperaturewill start to warm up (about).

Industrial Of The Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution set people away from farms and small villages and moved them to cities
and towns because of the job opportunities that arose in the cities. The Industrial Revolution not
only helped people move along in the late 1700s and early 1800s but also it has made the people
what they are today. During the Industrial Revolution, the movement from an agrarian society to an
industrial one reshaped the roles of families, widen the gap between classes, and led to the
developments in communication, transportation, and other scientific fields that completely
changed humanity.
The Industrial Revolution started in the late 1700s and early 1800s which helped the transition
from agrarian to one of industrial. Before the factories were made, the common folk would work
on the farms that would make the food that they would need to survive, and they would also make
their own clothes. All the clothes and materials that the people had before the industrial revolution
they would make themselves because there was no mass production of items being made and the
people who would sell the items never had enough in their inventory for everyone to buy. Factories
started to arise making it easier to mass produce items that the people wanted, like cloths and
eventually everyday materials. Those factories and opportunities for work is why people moved
into cities.( History.com)

Dramaturgical Metaphor Erving Goffman
Erving Goffman s above statement, referencing actors and public image, is a clear allusion to his
dramaturgical metaphor, which is one branch of his work on symbolic interactionism. His
dramaturgical metaphor delves into the premise that we are all actors who perform to others as
our audience (Goffman, 1990). It is this metaphor which will be evaluated and analysed for its
sociological significance, as well as the practical implications of the statement above, and what it
means to be sociologically significant. Many other sociologists have also tackled the depths of
Symbolic Interactionism, or the themes explored by the dramaturgical metaphor, of the likes of,
Mead and Blumer. Their insights and contributions will be discussed concerning Goffman s
statement. However, it is Goffman s dramaturgical metaphor which will be of the most help in
evaluating the statement given and its sociological significance. Although, as relayed above, other
sociologists work, such as Meads idea of the self being split into the I and the Me, and their
individual functions will be important in helping us further evaluate the statement, and its
sociological significance (Pampel, 2007). As will Blumer s three pronged approach to symbolic
interactionism, allowing us to grasp a basic understanding of the concepts and frameworks
surrounding symbolic interactionism, and enhance our knowledge of the dramaturgical metaphors
place in symbolic interactionism (Carter Fuller, 2015). Overall, the

Racism And Its Effects On Young Black Males
Racism throughout time has had a powerful negative force in society. There have been many
efforts made to relieve racism. Racism is still present in America, although many people are doing
their best to put a stop to racism and its somewhat devastating effects on young black males in
society. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...
Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it. (Lee) The negative stereotypes and racial
profiling that Americans hand down from generation to generation are damaging not only to the
minorities but to those perpetuating them as well. The behaviors that are kept alive because of
these negative stereotypes and the behaviors associated with them, create an emotional and social
struggle as well as presenting obstacles when receiving an education and employment opportunities.
Racismis the mishandling or understanding of a group of people on the basis of race, color, religion,
national origin, place of origin, or ancestry. The term racism may also denote a blind and
unreasoning hatred, envy, or prejudice (New Brunswick Human Rights Commission). Although
racism is a controversial topic, other issues have experienced just as much contention. One of these
is discrimination. Discrimination is the denial of equal rights because of someones personal
features, such as their race or color. Racial jokes and ethnic slurs are blatant examples of racial
discrimination. Racial slurs and jokes make

The Kennewick Man
In 1996 in the Columbia River Valley a pair of teenagers came across a skeletal by the river.
These remains belonged to the Kennewick Man who died 9,000 years ago. The skeleton of the
Kennewick man is one of the most complete skeletons discovered from that era with over three
hundred bones. The skeleton sparked controversy with Native American tribes claiming him as
their ancestor who should be properly reburied. The opposing side would be the scientists
claiming he is of polynesian descent, meaning his remains should be kept in a museum. Forensic
anthropologists analyzed the skeletal for signs of his descent. By the use of forensic
anthropology the bones were examined for wounds that would show his life style, his facial
structure, and signs of his diet which all gave evidence of him being of polynesian descent.
(Achenbach, 2014) Forensic anthropologist examine skeletal remains for elements of a skeleton
that can give clues to the person it belongs to. The Kennewick man s skeleton was found in
surprisingly good condition meaning the damage to the skeleton was done in his life, not due to
deterioration. The skeleton showed a projectile point lodged in his hip, five broken ribs that did

Bic Research Paper
Introduction
Pens, I m sure you use them nearly every day. Most likely, a fair number of the pens you use are
BIC. BIC, a disposable consumer product manufacturer, was founded in 1945. The product I
chose to research is the most common, the BIC Cristal ballpoint pen. BIC was created in France,
now it has spread its reach to the far corners of the world. BIC sells everything from pens, to
lighters, to water sports equipment.
Description
The BIC Cristal is made up of several materials. The majority of the pen is plastic. The variety of
plastic is called polystyrene. When polystyrene is produced it emits chlorofluorocarbons.
Chlorofluorocarbon is a toxic gas that has about 1200 times the effect of carbon dioxide on the
atmosphere. The plastics of the pen are manufactured in China, The US, France, And the
Netherlands. The tip of the pen is brass, and has a tungsten carbide ballpoint. The mining of copper

The first being the plastic, now obviously there still needs to be some plastic in the pens for
them to work, but the outside casing can easily switched to a different material. To make the
pens last long I would suggest steel, or for a more natural approach, wood. The tungsten carbide
is the worst element of the pen. I think that it could easily be replaced with steel also, or even a
different alloy. The pens may be lower quality, but they would cost less to make. In addition to
this, the product would be more aesthetically pleasing if the casing was wood or steel. Right now
the all natural look is in, and the wood casing would give the pen a rugged look, sure to boost
sales. They can also look for a different place to mine their tungsten carbide. In addition to that the
steel manufacturing plants are in two different places, halfway across the world from each other.
BIC could easily save gas if they consolidated their steel

The effects of too many concussions and other injuries sustained during contact sports can carry
on for the rest of your life if the case is severe enough. Most of the time, however, concussions are
very minor and only require a short time period of rest. If enough concussions do occur during an
athlete s life, say the amount a professional football player or hockey player might have endured,
chronic traumatic encephalopathy could take place. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy occurs when

Sports are not for everybody, not only because of talent level, but because a certain mindset is to
be had to be successful at any sport. A commitment is made. Forty hours of practice a week, the
average amount of time spent practicing for football players, all for a one hour game, the
average time of one game of college football, takes dedication. That is not even counting the time
spent icing, resting, and studying the playbook or film, not to mention the school work to be
kept up with for college and high school students. Most athletes have become used to the grind
and juggling three or four time consuming activities all at one time while being successful at
each. Waking up at the break of dawn, following a schedule, and suffering consequences when a
bad choice is made creates character and discipline that is often needed for many little league,
high school, and college athletes. The most important non tangible thing sports teach anyone is
how to get back up after falling, how to get knocked down but get right back up and keep going,
how to move on from failure and overcome it, focusing on the next important part of life. These
skills of determination and courage taught through sports are essential for being successful in any
part of life and are hard to come by anywhere

Bound Feet And Western Dress Character Analysis
Bound Feet Western Dress is a book written by Pang Mei Natasha Chang that begins in her family
home in Connecticut as she shuffles through a carved mahogany trunk from China that held the
secrets of China. Inside are her grandmother s embroidered silk lounging robes, grandfathers
tuxedo, white dinner jackets and jodhpurs, aprons of her amah, Xu Ma, and cheongsams that she
had learned to fold from her father. Finally, she finds the black cheongsam like dress that once
belonged to her great aunt Yu I and goes to tell the story of her life in traditional China as it was
merging with Western tradition and becoming modern. Throughout the book, Yu I tells of many old
Chinese traditions. In China, women were only meant to please men. If a familyhad a daughter, they
were considered guests and were later carted off for marriageby fourteen. Uneducated women were
considered more obedient, so parents often did not let their daughters learn anything other than
their duty to their state, family, and husband. By the age of four, boys were no longer allowed to
play and began to learn. They were given special tutoring and were required to learn and memorize
the books they were taught because their father or their tutor would make them recite what they had
read. The Chang s last names were a poem that changed every generation and when the poem ended,
it would restart with the next generation. Their poem was chia kuo pang ming which translates to

Harold PinterВґs Among the Hidden and the Theme of Propaganda
It s so easy for propaganda to work, and dissent to be mocked, believes Harold Pinter, Nobel Prize

totalitarian government of Among the Hidden will affect citizens, baron or farmer. Either way,
there will be attempts to voice other sides of the story. The governmentis spreading lies about the

Luke is the third child of a farmer s family, and propaganda deeply interfered with his life. Ever
since he was a toddler, he was obliged to a strict set of rules from his paranoid parents. Then they

was telling him about the government s propaganda, the propaganda they had believed. Luke s
parents fell right into the government s trap of lies. Therefore, Luke was forbidden from watching

What The Bourgeoisie Essay
Title: What the bourgeoisie...produces...is its own grave diggers. Its fall and the victory of the
proletariat are equally inevitable. Consider this statement with reference to the pattern of class
struggle that Marx sees appearing under capitalism.
Through my analysis of Marx and Engel s The Communist Manifesto I have come to somewhat
agree with their view that in the end the Proletariat always come out on top. It seems to me that it
is nothing but a vicious circle . Marx comments that through our history there has always been
evidence of two classes, in other words: the rich and the poor, he makes the claim that there has
forever been the server and the served: ...we find almost everywhere a complicated arrangement of
society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marx discusses in this piece the ever changing nature of systems, from the Feudal system to the
manufacturing system to the Industrial system, The feudal system of industry...now no longer
sufficed...The manufacturing system took it s place...Thereupon, steam and machinery
revolutionised industrial production. (D.Mclellan, Marx, OUP 1977) pg 223. Therefore the middle
man was cut out, he was no longer important, the division between the powerful and powerless
grew to become much more. The place of manufacture was taken by the giant, Modern Industry, the
place of the industrial middle class, by industrial millionaires, the leaders of the whole industrial
armies, the modern bourgeois.
Marx, in my opinion alludes that the Bourgeois have ruined many of the more caring and loving
parts of our society. The family is an institution that has been present for many centuries, people
associate the family as the core of a person s development, the way a person is brought up
essentially shapes the rest of one s life, the person one become, the way one live one s life and the
way in which one s relationships develop in adult life. The bourgeoisie has torn away from the
family its sentimental veil, and has reduced the family relation to a mere money relation.
(D.Mclellan, Marx, OUP 1977) pg 224. I disagree with this statement, of course I grasp that money
is extremely important

Barry B. Powell s Sedna, Mistress Of The Underworld
Sedna, mistress of the underworld is an Inuit myth that has been around for hundreds of years
and passed down generations. It is not clear when who the author or the myth is or when the
myth started being told since this story has been told for many, many years and was mostly
likely told orally. According to Barry B. Powell, this myth serves as an explanation for where
whales and seals came from as well as how Sedna became the mistress of the underworld, which is
why the myth can still be told today (Powell 488). At the beginning of the story, Sedna and her
father are introduced to the audience, who then learns that many young men are wanting to marry
Sedna. She does not accept any of them, however, because of her proud heart. Later on,... Show

The imagery that is used when describing the setting allows the audience to not only picture
clearly where the characters are but also to give an explanation for why Sedna would rather
marry a seagull she just met than a young man who she has probably known for some time.
Sedna wants the best for herself and does not wish to be with a man who cannot offer her
anything that her father cannot offer her himself in terms of a shelter and food. Sedna s pride is
her tragic flaw, and by not accepting what was given/offered to her, she ended up being worse off
than she was before. Another flaw for Sedna and her father is that they are vengeful. Sedna s
father gets revenge on the seagull, which almost results in him murdering his daughter, and it is
Sedna s revenge on her father and their hatred that caused the earth to swallow them. From these, it
can be understood that peacefulness, humility, whales and seals, and being weary of strangers are
all ideas, or animals, that this culture thinks is important. These are a few of the ideas that can be
taken away from this myth, but if they are looked at from another

Abstract Until modern times, most women possessed relatively few formal rights. The women of
ancient Sparta were a striking exception. Although they could not vote, Spartan women reportedly
owned 40 percent of Sparta s agricultural land, and enjoyed other rights that were equally
extraordinary. We offer a simple economic explanation for the Spartan anomaly. The deп¬

In brief, we conclude that the unusual rights possessed by Spartan women resulted from the fact
that these women were expected to perform tasks that were very valuable to men, and also very
costly for men to monitor. By contrast, in most societies prior to the industrial revolution
(including the rest of ancient Greece), the highest value use of women s time (from a man s
perspective) was in tasks that either were easily monitored or had few incentive compatibility
problems (i.e., raising children and other traditional women s work ). Therefore, most

Texas Tax Rebates
There is no doubt that Texas s state government is one of the most conservative in the nation on
both an economic and social level. As a governing body Texas has fought to deregulate itself on the
bases that a weak government translates to strong personal liberties. The political culture of the
state is apparent to all who live there. However, in recent history Texashas proven to be a solid
competitor when offering tax rebates to filmmakers and videogame creators who produce their
content in the state. These rebates refund some of the production costs and are widely considered to
be beneficial to employment within the state s entertainment and tourism industry (Weed). Sadly, in

The argument comes from the fiscally conservative mindset, arguing that using taxpayer money for
non necessities, like film is wasteful. However, this view overlooks that the state s rebate
program exists as an investment that the state will eventually make profit on in the form of
economic growth through employment. The legislation providing such rebates likely would
never have existed in the first place if it were not economically beneficial to the state.
Additionally, providing rebates is more likely to attract production of the benefit films that have
tighter budgets and have trouble breaking even, rather than the stereotypical big budget films,
meaning that rebates could mean the difference of a production company moving forward with
riskier films or not. The Hollywood welfare argument is a politically expedient one because of
the way Hollywood is viewed politically in present day American culture. Many on America s
rightwing view Hollywood as a big elitist organization with a liberal political agenda. Rhetoric like
Hollywood welfare truly is a representation of the divisive nature of modern times. Schimmel writes
in an essay regarding rhetoric that language affects our perception and understanding of social and
political realities, irrespective of how accurately it reflects them. Conservative state politicians have
capitalized on the preconditioned distrust conservatives have toward Hollywood paired with the
negative connotations that the political right has associated with welfare has led to film tax
incentives taking major blows, especially in predominantly conservative

Sally Hemings Jefferson Case Study
Betty Hemings, concubine of John Wayles, and her children, including Sally Hemings, were
legally slaves, although the children were majority white in ancestry (Gordon Reed, 2008).
After Wayles died in 1773, his daughter Martha and her husband Thomas Jefferson inherited the
Hemings family among a total of 135 slaves from his estate, as well as 11,000 acres of land
(Gordon Reed, 2008). In 1787, 14 year old Sally accompanied Jefferson s youngest daughter Polly
to London and then to Paris, where the widowed Jefferson had called for her. Sally spent two years
there with Jefferson (Gordon Reed, 2008). Instead of choosing the intimidating option to stay in
France alone, Sally Hemingschose to go back with Jefferson into slavery. This decision was a
smart decision on her part based off her trust in Jefferson, her possible pregnancy and feelings
for Jefferson, and her background. In my discussion of Sally and her decision to go back to
America with Jefferson, I will first discuss why and how Sally trusted Jefferson. Then I will
consider the possibility of Sally having romantic feelings for Jefferson, especially referencing her
pregnancy at the time. I will close my argument with a reminder and... Show more content on

From the Mind to the Body, Self Comes to Mind
From the Mind to the Body, Self Comes to Mind The mind emerged from the body through the
originations of conscious thoughts in an introspective manner that is accessible to the self. A
connection between mind and body eventually developed a proprietor within the thinking mind.
The neuropsychologist Antonio Damasio believes that a mindwith subjectivity is a conscious mind,
otherwise one would not know of his existence, who he is, and what he thinks (Damasio, 2010). At
some point in time, the mind developed feelings towards the experience of the connected me
(Damasio, 2010). The human mind somehow collaborated with the body and began to differentiate
between their inner world with subjective experiences, and the objective... Show more content on

Furthermore, Damasio breaks down the self as knower into three steps that together compose
the knower. These divisions are knowns as the protoself, composed of primordial feeling, the
core self, which is action driven, and the autobiographical self that incorporates social and
spiritual dimensions (Damasio, 2010). These aspects of the self are indispensable to construct
the conscious mind, and according to Damasio, one needs to account for these aspects before
trying to comprehend the neural basis of the conscious mind. Damasio and Bownds agree on the
fact that human minds are shaped and biased by their culture, and the society that they lived in
(Bownds, and Damasio). Bownds explains that the human knowledge is based on a
preconceived idealization of what they already know. Consequently, a human mind is considered
circular because they are formed by the same environment that they try to describe (Bownds,
1999). Consider the mechanic system that a zipper comprises for an instance. The zipper slider
joins together two sides of a sweater in order to close the sweater and make it work. In the same
way, the mind works along with the body. One can attribute the function of the zipper slider to the
brain and the sides to the body, but specifically the side in which the zipper, or the brain, is
attached, can represent the peripheral nervous system. In a way, the zipper slider, like

Health, The Elementary Human Right Essay
Introduction
Health the Elementary Human Right
Health is declared as a basic human right by the universal declaration of human rights in 1948,
stating that everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well being of
oneself and one s family, including food, clothing, housing, and medical care. Endowment of health
is a fundamental good and a moral issue because it provides opportunity to pursue life goals,
reduces pain and suffering, prevents premature loss of life, and provides information needed to
plan lives (Jacobson and Mathur, 2010). However, it is not later than three decades ago that health
is placed high on international agenda. This international agenda has strongly passed on into
almost all countries after the report of the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health, that
investing in health leads to economic development. This reports emphasized health as a resource
for everyday life and as driver of economy of nation (WHO, 2001).
What is a Health Policy?
Health policy can be formally defined as the broad statement of goals, objectives and means that
create the framework for activity. It includes what governments decide to do or not to do. (Buse et
al., 2005). Health policies are expected to offer methods and opportunities to develop collaboration
among different sectors, organizations and people to attain a common goal of promoting health
(WHO, 1986, Byrant, 2002). The main intent of health policies is to create supportive

Reflection Paper On Preschool Education
Reflection Paper In my opinion preschool is a very important part in education and it should be
provided to all. Preschool has been provided for some kids in the past and for others they have
not had the chance to be able to be enrolled in these programs. From the research that there has
been about preschool programs, there tends to be a lot of positive results. The idea of early
educationon children has always caught my attention because of all the benefits it comes with. That
is why my belief is that schools should provide preschool education programs to their communities.
My thoughts about preschool education programs is that I believe they are beneficial to the child
because of the positive affects it has on them. I know that by receiving preschool education
before they actually start their school career, help them adapt to the start of their education. I
believe that preschool also helps children in being able to get used to the idea of having to attend
school and to be able to start socializing with peers. Preschool also opens up the opportunity for
children to become more aware of their surroundings at an earlier age. I believe that becoming
more aware of their surroundings, they become more open to learningabout new things. The
concept about a federally funded preschool for all program sounds nice, but at the same time I
feel that there can be a limitation. I agree with the fact that there should be a free for all
program. I believe that every child has a right to be able to gain the advantage of becoming fast
learners. Also, I believe that each child has a right to become a better person or to gain insight
about their environment. The problem that I could see going wrong with federally funded
programs is that some requirements can be strict. I can see the idea of it trying to restrict how
many children can be involved in certain activities. Also, I can see that the programs will be
limited on funds to the point that some programs can have more than others. This can be a problem
because it is limiting the resources that a child could obtain.
In my perspective, a preschool education program consists of staff who have a lot of patience for
kids, attend to their needs, and truly care for them.

Pride in A Good Man is Hard to Find, Good Country People and Revelation
Pride is a very relevant issue in almost everyone s lives. Only when a person is forced to face his
pride can he begin to overcome it. Through the similar themes of her short stories, Flannery O
Connor attempts to make her characters realize their pride and overcome it.
In A Good Manis Hard to Find, the grandmother is a typical Southern lady. This constant effort to
present herself a Southern lady is where her pride is grounded. She criticizes the mother s

Similarly, Joy/Hulga is forced to face her pride in O Connor s Good Country People. Bruce L.
Edwards, Jr., notes that Hulga sees herself as liberating people from their illusions, believing she
has none of her own (901). Joy/Hulga s perspective on life is bleak and realistic. She achieves a
Ph.D. in philosophy and believes in the simplicity of believing in nothing. Her mother holds to
simple Southern beliefs that manners and tact determine a person s goodness. It is for this
reason that she views the Bible salesman as a good person. Joy/Hulga sees through her mother s
shallow country ways and despises her for it. Besides her beliefs, her wooden leg is also the
center for her pride. She is as sensitive about the artificial leg as a peacock about his tail (O
Connor, Good Country People 404). She uses it for attention when stomping around the house
and for security when refusing to reveal its secrets to Manly Pointer, the Bible salesman.
However, Manley is not as shallow as he seems but turns out to bring Joy/Hulga to her point of
grace. He robs her security and leaves a helpless, vulnerable, and bewildered new person to
reestablish her beliefs. Joy/Hulga has had her pride stripped away and must now change herself.
Finally, O Connor uses a similarly intellectual girl to bring Mrs. Turpin to a point of grace in
Revelation. While in the waiting room, Mrs. Turpin

The Four Styles Of Learning By Honey And Mumford
Learning is the art of gaining skills, preference, information, ethics, behavior and can engage one
in grasping different kind of information. There are many styles of learning, as we being college
students we can have many learning styles. According to Honey and Mumford there are four major
styles of learningas follows Activists, Reflectors, Theorists and Pragmatists.
Activists are the people who a re risk takers and they like experimenting new things and doing the
work based on trial and error method. For instance when a student learns a new chemical formula
in a chemistry class, he would be more enthusiastic to do the experiment at home and see what the
result is. He would take the risk to do the experiment at home irrespective of what the result of it
was to be due to curiosity, and the will to understand further.

Dry Teeth Research Paper
Tips For Dental Care When You Have Dry Mouth
When you have xerostomia, or dry mouth, it s important to practice good oral hygiene to prevent
tooth decay. With dry mouth, you have less saliva than normal. Saliva is needed to keep bacterial
growth on your teeth under control. Along with keeping your gums and teeth moist, saliva contains
enzymes and antibacterial properties that help fight tooth decay. Here are some dental hygiene tips
for protecting your teeth when you have dry mouth.
Brush And Floss
You may want to increase the number of times you brush daily. If you brush after every meal and
every snack, you ll get rid of sticky bits of food that attract bacteria. Flossing is important too
because it gets rid of food that is caught between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, look for products made for people with dry mouth. These soothe the irritation of dry gums
while helping guard against tooth decay. Your dentist may recommend certain brands of
mouthwash and toothpaste if you need additional fluoride for protecting your teeth.
Have Regular Dental Cleanings
When you have dry mouth, you want to see your dentist on a regular schedule so the condition of
your mouth and teeth can be monitored. Your teeth may develop plaque and tartar when you have a
diminished amount of saliva, especially if you avoid harsh dental products designed to remove
them. You ll want to have your teeth professionally cleaned according to the schedule
recommended by your dentist. This will help you avoid gum disease, tooth decay, and even bad
breath that often accompanies dry mouth.
Keep Your Mouth Moist
Keeping your mouth moist increases your comfort, and it may help prevent gum irritation from
dryness as well as inhibit bacterial growth. You can increase moisture by sipping water constantly
throughout the day. Also try sucking on hard candy as this can stimulate the production of saliva.
Just avoid sugary drinks and candy since these contribute to the development of cavities. Your
dentist may recommend you try artificial saliva. It has a thickening agent that helps it cling to your
mouth and teeth so the moistening effect lasts longer than what you get with plain

Morrie Schwartz s Tuesdays With Morrie
Tuesdays With Morrie is about Morrie Schwartz, a college professor at Brandeis University and
his student Mitch. It is about one last lesson Mitch has with his old professor. Mitch saw Morrie
in an interview on the Nightline (21 23). When Mitch sees Morrie on the shows he remembers a
promise he made to him fifteen years ago. Mitch made a promise to his old professor that he
would keep in touch with him after he graduates, but hasn t kept it. When Mitch sees Morrie for
the first time in fifteen years he finds out that he has ALS. Morrie does not have much time left and
Mitch comes to realize this. Mitch travels from Michigan to Mattachuates to visit Morrie. Seeing
his old professor sick and not having much time left, it impacts him. Mitch promises... Show more

I like Morrie the most because he doesn t let the fact that he is dying get in his way. He shows
hope, love, and care, all the things a person should show. He still wants people to come see him
and talk to him to take his mind off the fact that he is sick. He is full of wisdom and makes
others look differently on life. Morrie is a big inspiration to Mitch in many different ways.
Morrie reminds me of my great grandma, which is why I like Morrie the most. Morrie is just like
her, she never let the fact that she was sick and dying keep her from doing the things she loved to
do. She continued to do the things she loved up until the day she could no longer do it. My great
grandma was an inspiration to others just like Morrie was. The lesson that was most important to
me in this book was the lesson that Morrie taught Mitch. Morrie taught Mitch to value things that he
never thought about. He made Mitch rethink everything that he thought was important. So many
people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half asleep, even when they re busy doing
things they think are important. This is because they re chasing the wrong things. The way you get
meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community
around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and

A Career As A Career In The Music Industry
The process to become a professional singer would have to start when you re young, because it
takes time to actually learn music and to build your voice. Most cited researches I have looked up
reported that many professional singers today usually have begin their training of practicing who
they are at a young age. Singingopportunities can come from anywhere, such as being in a play at
school. It s important for singers to develop a variety of styles. It s good to know more than one
type of musicnow and days for a better position in the music industry. For instance both popular
and classical styles should be considered because employment opportunities exist in each. To get
better results for your outcome most people would consider enrolling in a formal training
program. Once you ve reached your unique voice, continue the process and look for
professional singing opportunities. To get taken seriously you should build up your
professional representation and perform as much as possible. Musicians typically advance in
their careers by seeking an audience for their craft. While performance opportunities may be
offered all over the country, it s noted that many musicians relocate to hub cities for the
entertainment industry like New York, Los Angeles, Nashville or Chicago. These states are
typically where you would find a famous singer or musicians that you can reflect on and learn
from in your experience of making your career a success. For me after this step would be to go
to either University of Houston or Juilliard. Colleges and universities may offer numerous
performing opportunities. In addition to choral ensembles and formal recitals and shows,
performing in placing that will allow you to sing or local singing opportunities may be
beneficial for a beginner. Singers can audition for concerts and theatrical performances to build
their vocal skills. Make sure to take advantage of school opportunities as while. Many schools
with music and vocal degree programs have resources such as studios, practice rooms or
reference libraries that will allow you to exercise and practice on your craft of music. When
looking for a music or vocal performance degree program usually you will need to audition get

George Whitefield Religion And Slavery
Many atrocious things were in motion during the 1700s in the New World. The English colonies
of the New World had an economy based on African slaves. English colonies had the biggest influx
of Africans. Not only were Africans effected by slavery, but so were many of the English settlers
themselves. Religion conflicted with the practice of slavery, which caused the colonists to in a
sense awaken and form new explicit opinions about religion. This caused previous conveyers of
religion to judge the new ways colonists were thinking about and acting out religion. This
awakening in religion was preached by many preachers. At the forefront of the movement was one
such preacher known as George Whitfield. Many other people during George... Show more content

But further, if teaching slaves Christianity has such a bad influence upon their lives, why are you
desirous of having your children taught? Think you, they are any way better by nature than the
poor negroes? No, in no ways. Blacks are just as much, and no more, conceived and born in sin, as
white men are: both, if born and bred up here, I am persuaded are naturally capable of the same
improvement. (Whitefield, 4) In this quote Whitefield questions that if Christianity has such a bad
influence on the slaves, then why are colonists so eager to teach it to their offspring. George
Whitefield states that blacks are no more born into sin then white men. He believes that both races
sin equally.
George Whitefield played a massive role in the Great Awakening. He was an English minister that
used the local revivals of Edwards and the Tennants to create a Great Awakening within himself.
Whitefield then traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to spread his message to the English colonists.
When the colonists saw George Whitefield preach they would gather in large crowds. Many people
thought he looked angelic. He looked almost angelic; a young, slim, slender

Mcdonald s Commercial
It s becoming more common for the top athletes being advertised in commercials such as
McDonald s, Arby s and even Coke. These athletes are competing at the highest level; they are
strong, healthy and very driven at whatever they do so that they are successful. They are what
little girls and boys dream of being when they are older. In a commercial put on by McDonald sit
continues the trend of top tier athletes promoting their fast food. This commercial sends a harmful
message to viewers, and McDonald s should stop airing this immediately.
This commercial begins smoothly enough. LeBron James, this NBA star, is at this undisclosed
club, and wants to get in. He is then approached from a McDonald s worker asking him for the
secret pass code. LeBron then tells her special sauce . He is let in and the commercial begins to
say that in this club, only the best of the best gather there. It shows LeBron James being the
newest member of the club as it simultaneously shows Johnny Manziel, Alex Morgan and Ally
Raisman all there already. The commercial voiceover then goes what does one serve the best
basketball player in the world? and then it shows a vivid picture of the new Bacon Clubhouse
Sandwich all while describing what s inside this new sandwich by McDonald s. It emphasizes on

LeBron obviously is the best of the best and wants to get in with the others. The McDonald s
worker being this innocent door girl letting in these athletes with the password gives off this vibe
that all McDonald s workers are as cheerful as she is. The piece is effective in portraying
McDonald s as a delicious choice for even top athletes. The commercial clearly reaches its audience
in a humorous and memorable way. But there is more going on here than just LeBron enjoying this
club and new

Shark Finning Is Killing Sharks
Are you scared of sharks? Well, there is approximately 5 human deaths, shark related each year,
but over 100 million sharks are killed each year by humans. Who should really be scared? Shark
finning is killing sharks and decreasing their populations to a level where they may never fully
recover.
Causes for this are fishermen shark finning at a very high rate and for consumers being oblivious to
the situation or what had to be done for them to eat the shark fin soup. Sharks are being harmed by
humans cutting off their fin, also known as shark finning to make a Chinese delicacy called shark

horrid, oversized, and vengeful creatures that go after humans with only the intent to kill and eat.
The three stakeholders in the shark finning situation are the consumers and fishermen which believe
shark finning should not be banned and the environmentalists which believe shark finning should
be banned. Consumers believe that shark finning should not be banned because for the majority of
them they believe it is part of their culture and that it will provide health benefits which are just a

but there has been evidence of high levels of mercury and toxins found in the fin. The normal

Security Breach Of Banking Industry And Retail Business
Security Breach in Banking Industry and Retail Business
Financial technologies play a significant role in modern banking system. Most of us are familiar
with internet banking and mobile banking. These technologies allow us to access our accounts,
transfer funds, pay for our purchases, and even apply for a loan without leaving a house or an

Yearly Goals For Achieving Personal Fitness
Yearly Goals At times, we may question the source of our true motivation. Moreover, what may
keep us going and guided in life? Goals play an important role in every aspect of our everyday

goal may be as simple as buying some milk or as complex as buying stocks and shares. A clear,

Political Realism in Morgenthau s Six Points
Deviations from a coherent system of irrationality: Political Realism in Morgenthau s Six Points
Hans Morgenthau set out to present a theory of international politics (1948, revised 1985, p. 3)
which would be tested by its empiricism and ruthless pragmatism (Snyder, 2004, p. 3). This essay
identifies Morgenthau s definition of scope, purpose and concepts underlying a theoretical structure
initially set out in six points in Politics Among Nations, identifies the structure holding these
components together into a coherent realist theory of international politics (Morgenthau, 1985 p. 3)
and discusses some of the controversy Morgenthau s proposals have engendered. Morgenthau s
empirical pragmatism ultimately reduces to prudence, which produces moral political decisions,
ethicsof which are different for the state than for individuals. Ever the empiricist, Morgenthau
derived this from history rather than inventing such a theory wholesale. The inherent location of
this drive to interest through power sets off what is now called classical realismfrom structural
realism where institutional forces drive the will to power rather than innate human tendencies as in
Morgenthau et al. (Mearsheimer, 2006, p. 71). Taliaferro (2006) sets classical realism off from
neoclassical and modern neorealism in that Morgenthau s original perspective focused more from
the point of view of the state acting on its perceived interests, while the offspring paradigms

Breaking Toxic Relational Ties At The Years
Breaking Toxic Relational Ties
Over the years, the more I have worked in helping people, the more I see the need for toxic
relational ties to be addressed. Not only are people struggling with certain bondages and
strongholds, they also have deep relational ties with people, past and/or present that are keeping
them tied to specific areas of bondage.
NOTE: make sure nothing copied from online articles and/or Ransomed Heart
In order for freedom to . . . This is necessary for those where certain key areas of bondage have a
connection to a significant relationship in the person s life.
The Scriptures do not use the term relational tie (often called a soul tie), but the principles of
people being knit together and two becoming one flesh is taught in the Word. These relational ties
are intended to bind people together for good purposes, so that we become joint and knit together
in the purposes of God.
For example, in marriage, a relational tie binds a man and woman together in covenant marriage
for life. A relational tie bonds friends in covenant unity and it also ties groups together who link
arms for the sake of the Kingdom of God. At the same time, relational ties can also keep people
bound to the spiritual bondage that came about through a particular relationship. These relational
ties allow for a unity in the spirit realm for God or the demonic realm to manifest through our lives.
For example, relational ties between married couples draw them together like

Despite Magna Carta being granted exactly 800 years ago, it still plays an influential role in

  • 2. The Girl Once upon a time there was a young Vietnamese girl who was beautiful and loved by everyone, especially her grandmother. When she turned fifteen, her grandmother gave her a bright white silk Ao Dai. It was the most elegant dress in all of Vietnam, so she wore it to school everyday. Even though every other girl worn similar white Ao Dai s, she was given the name Little White Bride. One day before school, her mother asked her to bring her grandmother the honeycomb cake they made the night before, but she knew the journey would be dangerous. Her mother warned her of the hostile men that would go to any lengths to get a girl to get into a van with them, so men in China could have beautiful young brides. However the girl was brave, maybe a little too brave, and shrugged it off. So she left her house with the cake and her schoolbooks and started her walk into the country. Her grandmother lived only fifteen minutes away near the rice fields, so she didn t feel a need to rush. As she walked past an abandoned field, a young boywho looked about the same age as her was riding up behind her on a rickety old bike. He was coming straight towards her with a surprised look on his face. He slowed down and said You know how dangerous it is for a girl of your age and beauty to be out here all alone? Yes, but I m not worried, I ve only run into you so far and you don t look scary. Plus I m already half way to my grandmother s house. Is the house with the green roof your ... • 3. Analyzing Stafford s Poem Traveling Through The Dark Traveling Through the Dark Stafford furtively conceals the profound meaning of his poem behind a story of the narrator, who stops alongside the road to care for a deer. The genius behind poem is better understood when the superficial meaning is expressed deeply. Driving down a narrow mountain road, traveling through the dark, the narrator of the poem encounters a deer. The deer is actually dead on the edge of the Wilson River road. The traveler decides to send the deer over the edge of the canyon, because to swerve might make more dead. This line indicates that if he fails or swerves in his decision, the deer could cause an accident on the narrow road that might cost more lives. The narrator prepared with this purpose, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The personified car is expectantly awaiting his decision, eager to get moving again. The wilderness takes on human abilities also, silently witnessing the outcome it knows must be, but wishing it was otherwise. As the narrator contemplates all of this, the taillights of the car illuminate him in their red light. This is reflective of the heightened emotions he is experiencing, but also brings to mind the bloody fate of the deer and her unborn fawn. The narrator thinks hard for us all and proceeds with the task he had committed to since the beginning. He pushes the deer and her unborn fawn over the edge into the river. There is much more to this poem than its literal story. The title, along with the story itself, suggests man s overlook for nature. People seem to travel through oblivious to the consequences of their actions. The driver who killed the deer is an example of this theme. He was also traveling through the dark, as the deer was a recent killing. The fact that he left it in the middle of the road, with no further thought for it or anyone else behind him, implies his dark nature. The main theme of the poem however, is the sadness and misfortune that accompanies everyone s journey through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman The book, The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman draws attention to some very good points concerning globalization and the world economy today. Friedman emphasizes the status of America today in relation to the other countries of the world. As I looked at the things in which he warned about or highlighted, I realized the importance of this issue. He talks about a few aspects in which need to be kept competitive in order for America to retain their current standing in the world market. First of all, Friedman talks about the different levels of globalization. There are 3 different time periods in which the society has differed and changed, bringing us to where we are today. Globalization 1.0, which took place from 1492 to 1800, was the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the area in which I think Friedman s theory is slightly flawed. He seems to say that there was almost no sort of international communication, relation, or business before the discovery of the new world. Following globalization 1.0 came 2.0. This was the time from 1800 to 2000. There were many advances in this period that drastically changed the world in which we live today. Communication, transportation, and growing trade markets influenced and brought us to multinational companies, which greatly shrunk the world down to yet another smaller size. Today, we are in the globalization 3.0 phase, in which communication (mostly through the Internet) and transportation are at a level in which distance hardly poses any problem at all. Another very large issue in this era is the concept of outsourcing. This is the idea that if an item can be produced more cheaply outside of the company/region, it will be. The market will go to the cheapest source of production. Many of the countries or cultures that have been transformed by the flattening of the world have been affected because of their upper hand through education. We as Americans have gotten used to being elite over the years due to our high economic standing and educational excellence, but in recent years, the educational agenda has increased in other countries, while America s education has seemed to decline. This is an area in which we need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Drugs And Drugs A. Introduction About $800 Billion worth of drugs are sold every year. The drug industry has affected agriculture in various ways. While some may think that drug industry has done good for the agriculture industry. It has also had repercussions. Drugs not only affect our ecosystem, it also affects us human beings, animals, and plants. It s similar to a cycle, we start off with the ecosystem, which then leads to plants, then the animals, to human beings. If the drugindustry is affecting the whole agriculture industry it s affecting the whole world. Drugs affectour ecosystem by the pollution, drugs affect plant growth, drugs affect animals development, and all of these affect what we has humans eat on a daily basis. If something goes wrong because of the drugs that the farmers are using, at the end it will affect humans beings that have either consumed or inhaled; and it will be corrupting the whole agriculture industry which could ve been prevented. B. Drug History A little bit of history of how marijuana began to go high in demand. Marijuana was one of the first drugs that became popular. In 1616 tobacco was known as the expert item because of Jamestown. Spaniards found the natives in the West Indies using the tobacco plant. The spaniards then took some of the tobacco seeds to Europe, which then ended up spreading to other countries and around the Mediterranean Sea. The person who discovered this was, John Rolfe. • 7. Magwitch s Manipulations of Pip in Great Expectations Essay Magwitch s Manipulations of Pip in Great Expectations In Great Expectations, Charles Dickens criticizes the motivation of the lower classes to rise to the level of wealth and education held by the upper classes by showing the extent to which Pip is exploited by Magwitch to meet these goals. To meet the expectations of the gentleman, Pip must leave his family and any possibility of earning his living in order to satisfy the educational and societal demands of this standard. Magwitch, a social deviant, hopes to prove his viability by using his unfortunate circumstances to produce a gentleman entirely by his own effort. Magwitch exhibits Pip to the world as a gentleman who is not hardened by labor, but he does so by his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The title of gentleman therefore denotes one who passes his time idly without and obligation or responsibility besides remaining socially amiable. The emergence of the middle class in the nineteenth century allowed people not of noble birth to enter the ranks of gentility. Becoming an educated and morally noble gentleman had come within the reach of those who had previously been excluded. Industry made it possible for someone of the working class to elevate his social position through his own efforts. This new definition of the gentleman had a great appeal among the emerging middle class because high birth, the traditional passport to recognition as a gentleman, could be side stepped at least in theory (Platz 152). This new opportunity created a split between the traditional upper classes and the newly established English bourgeoisie. Dickens recognized the paradoxical aspiration toward the position of an idle gentleman through labor. Obtaining the appearance of a gentleman became more important than the means by which the facade is constructed. Platz writes, Dickens Great Expectations can be interpreted as an attempt to dismantle both the legitimacy and symbolic authority of the gentleman (162). Pip deceives himself by accepting the old ... Of those 539 households with married couples have one or more children living at home under the age of 18 (Social Explorer, 2013). My family household is myself, my husband of 23 years, and our 15 year old daughter. We have a 21 year old daughter who lives on her own currently in Colorado. I think the changes in familyhas to do with how families have changed to now recognize families of same sex couples. This award has only been granted 109 times to 113 fortunate literates between the years of 1901 to 2016 (All Nobel Prizes in Literature). Artists whose literature has had an unbelievable impact on people are the type of artists to be considered for the Nobel Prizein Literature. Bob Dylan became awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016 for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition (All Nobel Prizes in Literature). The Civil Rights movement will be remembered as a mass popular movement that enforced that African Americans should have the same access to and opportunities for the basic privileges and rights of a white U.S. citizen (Scholastic). It was the unexpected accomplishments from the movement that shocked many generations. Bob Dylan impacted the civil rights movement in many ways through his music. Not to mention, The Atlantic states, He wrote that song to tap into that movement, calling out writers, critics, senators, congressmen, mothers and fathers to all step up and embrace change (The Atlantic). To put it differently, Bob Dylan was communicating with artists everywhere, encouraging them to express how they were feeling and that they were not alone. Dylan specifically calls out those people at the beginning of every stanza, and the rest of the verse accommodates the reasons for why he is calling them out to help. Energy can always be conserved; you cannot create nor destroy energy. Something you can do with energy is you can transfer energy between objects (livescience). Energycan come in different forms. The two most common different forms are potential and kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, some examples of that include downhill motion of a roller coaster cart, rolling a bowling ball, and the motion of a bike. Industrial Of The Industrial Revolution Jason Thibodeaux Mrs. Martinez English IV, 1st hour 4/29/16 The Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution set people away from farms and small villages and moved them to cities and towns because of the job opportunities that arose in the cities. The Industrial Revolution not only helped people move along in the late 1700s and early 1800s but also it has made the people what they are today. During the Industrial Revolution, the movement from an agrarian society to an industrial one reshaped the roles of families, widen the gap between classes, and led to the developments in communication, transportation, and other scientific fields that completely changed humanity. The Industrial Revolution started in the late 1700s and early 1800s which helped the transition from agrarian to one of industrial. Before the factories were made, the common folk would work on the farms that would make the food that they would need to survive, and they would also make their own clothes. All the clothes and materials that the people had before the industrial revolution they would make themselves because there was no mass production of items being made and the people who would sell the items never had enough in their inventory for everyone to buy. Factories started to arise making it easier to mass produce items that the people wanted, like cloths and eventually everyday materials. Those factories and opportunities for work is why people moved into cities.( History.com) With families ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Dramaturgical Metaphor Erving Goffman Erving Goffman s above statement, referencing actors and public image, is a clear allusion to his dramaturgical metaphor, which is one branch of his work on symbolic interactionism. His dramaturgical metaphor delves into the premise that we are all actors who perform to others as our audience (Goffman, 1990). It is this metaphor which will be evaluated and analysed for its sociological significance, as well as the practical implications of the statement above, and what it means to be sociologically significant. Many other sociologists have also tackled the depths of Symbolic Interactionism, or the themes explored by the dramaturgical metaphor, of the likes of, Mead and Blumer. Their insights and contributions will be discussed concerning Goffman s statement. However, it is Goffman s dramaturgical metaphor which will be of the most help in evaluating the statement given and its sociological significance. Although, as relayed above, other sociologists work, such as Meads idea of the self being split into the I and the Me, and their individual functions will be important in helping us further evaluate the statement, and its sociological significance (Pampel, 2007). Racism is still present in America, although many people are doing their best to put a stop to racism and its somewhat devastating effects on young black males in society. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it. (Lee) The negative stereotypes and racial profiling that Americans hand down from generation to generation are damaging not only to the minorities but to those perpetuating them as well. The behaviors that are kept alive because of these negative stereotypes and the behaviors associated with them, create an emotional and social struggle as well as presenting obstacles when receiving an education and employment opportunities. Racismis the mishandling or understanding of a group of people on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, place of origin, or ancestry. The skeleton of the Kennewick man is one of the most complete skeletons discovered from that era with over three hundred bones. The skeleton sparked controversy with Native American tribes claiming him as their ancestor who should be properly reburied. The opposing side would be the scientists claiming he is of polynesian descent, meaning his remains should be kept in a museum. Forensic anthropologists analyzed the skeletal for signs of his descent. By the use of forensic anthropology the bones were examined for wounds that would show his life style, his facial structure, and signs of his diet which all gave evidence of him being of polynesian descent. (Achenbach, 2014) Forensic anthropologist examine skeletal remains for elements of a skeleton that can give clues to the person it belongs to. Consider this statement with reference to the pattern of class struggle that Marx sees appearing under capitalism. It seems to me that it is nothing but a vicious circle . (D.Mclellan, Marx, OUP 1977) pg 223. Therefore the middle man was cut out, he was no longer important, the division between the powerful and powerless grew to become much more. The place of manufacture was taken by the giant, Modern Industry, the place of the industrial middle class, by industrial millionaires, the leaders of the whole industrial armies, the modern bourgeois. Marx, in my opinion alludes that the Bourgeois have ruined many of the more caring and loving parts of our society. The family is an institution that has been present for many centuries, people associate the family as the core of a person s development, the way a person is brought up essentially shapes the rest of one s life, the person one become, the way one live one s life and the way in which one s relationships develop in adult life. The bourgeoisie has torn away from the family its sentimental veil, and has reduced the family relation to a mere money relation. (D.Mclellan, Marx, OUP 1977) pg 224. From the Mind to the Body, Self Comes to Mind From the Mind to the Body, Self Comes to Mind The mind emerged from the body through the originations of conscious thoughts in an introspective manner that is accessible to the self. A connection between mind and body eventually developed a proprietor within the thinking mind. The neuropsychologist Antonio Damasio believes that a mindwith subjectivity is a conscious mind, otherwise one would not know of his existence, who he is, and what he thinks (Damasio, 2010). These divisions are knowns as the protoself, composed of primordial feeling, the core self, which is action driven, and the autobiographical self that incorporates social and spiritual dimensions (Damasio, 2010). These aspects of the self are indispensable to construct the conscious mind, and according to Damasio, one needs to account for these aspects before trying to comprehend the neural basis of the conscious mind. Damasio and Bownds agree on the fact that human minds are shaped and biased by their culture, and the society that they lived in (Bownds, and Damasio). Bownds explains that the human knowledge is based on a preconceived idealization of what they already know. Consequently, a human mind is considered circular because they are formed by the same environment that they try to describe (Bownds, 1999). This international agenda has strongly passed on into almost all countries after the report of the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health, that investing in health leads to economic development. This reports emphasized health as a resource for everyday life and as driver of economy of nation (WHO, 2001). What is a Health Policy? Health policy can be formally defined as the broad statement of goals, objectives and means that create the framework for activity. It includes what governments decide to do or not to do. (Buse et al., 2005). Health policies are expected to offer methods and opportunities to develop collaboration among different sectors, organizations and people to attain a common goal of promoting health (WHO, 1986, Byrant, 2002). • 33. Reflection Paper On Preschool Education Reflection Paper In my opinion preschool is a very important part in education and it should be provided to all. Preschool has been provided for some kids in the past and for others they have not had the chance to be able to be enrolled in these programs. From the research that there has been about preschool programs, there tends to be a lot of positive results. The idea of early educationon children has always caught my attention because of all the benefits it comes with. That is why my belief is that schools should provide preschool education programs to their communities. My thoughts about preschool education programs is that I believe they are beneficial to the child because of the positive affects it has on them. I know that by receiving preschool education before they actually start their school career, help them adapt to the start of their education. I believe that preschool also helps children in being able to get used to the idea of having to attend school and to be able to start socializing with peers. Preschool also opens up the opportunity for children to become more aware of their surroundings at an earlier age. I believe that becoming more aware of their surroundings, they become more open to learningabout new things. The concept about a federally funded preschool for all program sounds nice, but at the same time I feel that there can be a limitation. I agree with the fact that there should be a free for all program. I believe that every child has a right to be able to gain the advantage of becoming fast learners. Also, I believe that each child has a right to become a better person or to gain insight about their environment. The problem that I could see going wrong with federally funded programs is that some requirements can be strict. I can see the idea of it trying to restrict how many children can be involved in certain activities. Also, I can see that the programs will be limited on funds to the point that some programs can have more than others. This can be a problem because it is limiting the resources that a child could obtain. In my perspective, a preschool education program consists of staff who have a lot of patience for kids, attend to their needs, and truly care for them. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Only when a person is forced to face his pride can he begin to overcome it. Through the similar themes of her short stories, Flannery O Connor attempts to make her characters realize their pride and overcome it. In A Good Manis Hard to Find, the grandmother is a typical Southern lady. This constant effort to present herself a Southern lady is where her pride is grounded. She achieves a Ph.D. in philosophy and believes in the simplicity of believing in nothing. Her mother holds to simple Southern beliefs that manners and tact determine a person s goodness. It is for this reason that she views the Bible salesman as a good person. Joy/Hulga sees through her mother s shallow country ways and despises her for it. Besides her beliefs, her wooden leg is also the center for her pride. She is as sensitive about the artificial leg as a peacock about his tail (O Connor, Good Country People 404). She uses it for attention when stomping around the house and for security when refusing to reveal its secrets to Manly Pointer, the Bible salesman. However, Manley is not as shallow as he seems but turns out to bring Joy/Hulga to her point of grace. He robs her security and leaves a helpless, vulnerable, and bewildered new person to reestablish her beliefs. Joy/Hulga has had her pride stripped away and must now change herself. Political Realism in Morgenthau s Six Points Deviations from a coherent system of irrationality: Political Realism in Morgenthau s Six Points Hans Morgenthau set out to present a theory of international politics (1948, revised 1985, p. 3) which would be tested by its empiricism and ruthless pragmatism (Snyder, 2004, p. 3). This essay identifies Morgenthau s definition of scope, purpose and concepts underlying a theoretical structure initially set out in six points in Politics Among Nations, identifies the structure holding these components together into a coherent realist theory of international politics (Morgenthau, 1985 p. 3) and discusses some of the controversy Morgenthau s proposals have engendered. Morgenthau s empirical pragmatism ultimately reduces to prudence, which produces moral political decisions, ethicsof which are different for the state than for individuals. NOTE: make sure nothing copied from online articles and/or Ransomed Heart In order for freedom to . . . This is necessary for those where certain key areas of bondage have a connection to a significant relationship in the person s life. The Scriptures do not use the term relational tie (often called a soul tie), but the principles of people being knit together and two becoming one flesh is taught in the Word.
