1.1What is Dementia?
Dementia is a broad term used to describe a various amount of diseases that are associated with
the decline in the mental state. One of the most common forms of dementia is Alzheimers. It is
the main culprit for almost half the cases of dementia seen in patients (O Shea, 2007). Other
common forms of dementia include vascular dementia, mixed dementia and lewy body dementia.
The more uncommon forms of dementia include picks disease, creutzfeldt jacob disease,

housing, hostels and specialist care units. The main form of care for people suffering from
dementia is family and home care. There are very few care facilities located in Ireland compared
to those in other EU countries. People with dementia usually do not receive the treatment and
attention that they need until it is too late. Cahill et al. (2012) explains that the funding system in
Ireland is more supportive of home care rather than long term care facilities. Only 6% of dementia
funding is available to community care services. It is a large belief that most patients with
dementia are disregarded or ignored due to the fact that the process of caring for them is difficult
