On November 14, Ton Wilthagen organized the seminar "Man-Machine & Values", with the central premise on how human values can be embedded in human-technology interaction. Present slides are the contribution of the Tilburg EVS-team to this seminar. We give a recent update of values across Europe (using the 2017 EVS data), show findings on polarization, and show what the Netherlands think of technology (case: social media). With the support of the Erasmus+ Programma of the European Union.

… but soon, with values
Brief overview of the presentation for today
INGE: I inserted a new version of my photo (less blurry)
Short history of the EVS – initiated in 1979 by Ruud de Moor and Jan Kerkhofs. Cross-national and longitudinal project. Several theoretical intakes, but mostly famous for its contribution on modernization theory (Inglehart).
Inge, be very careful about the scale ranges! Sometimes the geographical divide in colors is the same, but the scale range is limited (or the opposite)
Percentage of people that attends a religious service at least once a month
INGE: I would leave this one out -> not a value (can also be regarded more as an explanation for other values)
Opinions towards homosexuality, abortion, divorce, euthanasia and suicide (1-10)
INGE: I changed the wording in the slide a bit to make more clear what it is about
Two questions, (1) how important is it for you to live in a democracy, with response scales going from “not at all important” (1) to “absolutely important” (10), and (2) the question how democratically is your country being governed today? With (1) not at all democratic to (10) completely democratic.
INGE: I added democray to the title
Average of “when a mother works for pay, the children suffer”, “a job is alright, but what most women really want is a home and children” and “all in all, a family suffers when the woman has a full-time job” (1 = disagree strongly; 4 = agree strongly)
INGE: I changed the title and the wording a bit
Average of the items “to fully develop your talents, you need to have a job”, “it is humiliating to receive money without having to work for it”, “people who don’t work turn lazy”, “work is a duty towards society”, and “work should always come first, even if it means less spare time”. Response categories range from 1 (disagree strongly) to 5 (agree strongly).
Average of the three semantic differentials “immigrants take away jobs”, “immigrants make crime problems worse” and “immigrants are a strain on a country’s welfare system”. The scale ranges from 1-10 with 10 meaning more negative opinions towards immigrants.
INGE: I changed the title
Average of how concerned are you about the living conditions of (1) elderly people, (2) unemployed people, and (3) sick and disabled people. The ‘immigrants’ item had a comparably low factor loading and was therefore left out. A higher value (5) means more concern than a low value (1).
INGE: I changed the wording
Share of people that goes to church at least once a month
Average of how justified are homosexuality, abortion, divorce, euthanasia, and suicide.
