platforms.A thematic analysis resulted in the identification of four main themes: (a) important people in my life,
(b) safety and security, (c) comfortable places, and (d) an authentic space.

Ethnographic modes of inquiry have had a long and distinguished history in the
social sciences, especially in anthropology and sociology. Like all interpretive
methods, ethnographic approaches are oriented to the study of meaning, but,
in the case of ethnographic methods, meaning is understood to be structured
by culture—that is, by collectively shared and transmitted symbols, under-
standings, and ways of being. The word ethnography dates from the emergence
of anthropology as a discipline in the late-19th century. Anthropologists coined
the term to describe monograph-length descriptions of people who were ethnoi
or “other” (Erickson, 1986). Intrigued by distant cultures, many of which were
European colonies, they traveled to far-off outposts to see them first-hand.
Ethnographic methods evolved out of these cross-cultural encounters. The goal
was to understand a particular culture on its own terms, to represent the
meaning of actions and institutions from “the native’s point of view” (Malinow-
ski, 1922). In his ground-breaking study of the Trobriand Islanders, Malinowski
combined long-term participant-observation with in-depth interviewing, the
two hallmarks of modern ethnography (Erickson, 1986). Ethnographic methods
remain the privileged mode of inquiry in cultural anthropology and have become
increasingly important in the fields of education and communication.
In psychology, where the prevailing orientation has been positivist, propos-
als for a “second” or “cultural” psychology were part of the intellectual landscape
from its inception as a discipline (Cahan & White, 1992; Jahoda, 1989). Wilhelm
Wundt wrote extensively on cultural psychology and was “captivated by the
ethnographic material he pursued so tirelessly” (Jahoda, 1993, p. 181). Despite
this early history, modern psychology has excluded ethnographic approaches
from its methodological repertoire. Even community psychology, with its com-
mitments to contextual understandings and to collaborative models of research,
has marginalized ethnographic methods (Stewart, 2000).
However, the recent renewal of interest in cultural psychology makes it
timely to consider the nature of ethnographic methods, given the affinity of
ethnography for problems in cultural psychology. Although psychologists from

Importance of Becoming a Global Citizen
Globalization is an integration and interaction process between individuals, organizations, and governments across the world. It is an economic process, which is associated with cultural and social aspects (Steger, 2017). The growth of globalization has been supported by communication technology and transportation and has led to the growth of ideas, cultures and international trade. On the other hand, globalism is any description of the world that involves networks of connections, which reduce the distance between regions and continents. The main difference between these two terms is that globalization is the actual act of connectivity between people and regions in the world while globalism discusses the importance and usefulness of world connectivity by attaching a moral value to the process (Steger, 2017).
Benefits of Global Citizenship
Global citizenship involves accepting cultural diversity, caring, global awareness, and the promotion of sustainability and social justice (Blum, 2016). Technology has allowed people to become global citizens by allowing connectivity between different regions. Global citizenship is important in achieving my personal, academic and career goals. My personal goal is to grow and have an influence in the world. Global citizenship helps me understand different cultures, which is important towards my personal goal. It aids my education goal by giving me the access to different works by different authors across the world thus increasing my understanding. For my professional goals, this concept is important in allowing me to interact with professionals from different regions and learn about their challenges, which will help to grow.
Differences in Theorists Definitions
Different theorists have defined global citizenship differently, and there is no consensus on a universal definition of the concept. The difference in the definition is because the theorists use their disciplinary perspective in the definition. For instance, Golmohamad argues that global citizenship is equal to the world and international citizenship, whereas Haugestad states that global citizenship is about social justice (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). The political, developmental, theological and educational disciples influence the different theorists’ definitions. The differences can be supported by the fact that philosophical theorists highlight ethics and morality, while educational theorists might consider global awareness. Historical Perspectives on Family Studies
This article explores the relationship of historical
research to contemporary family studies. Family
history was influenced greatly by fields such as
sociology and anthropology, leading it to make
several contributions to those fields in turn. The
continuing collaboration of these disciplines can
significantly enrich current family research, prac-
tice, and policy making. History's specific contri-
bution lies in its attention to context. Although
historical research confirms sociologic and eth-
nographic findings on the diversity of family
forms, for example, it also reveals that all families
are not created equal. The advantage of any par-
ticular type offamily at any particular time is con-
structed out of contingent and historically vari-
able social relationships. Historical research
allows researchers to deepen their analysis of
family diversity and family change by challenging
widespread assumptions about what is and what
is not truly new in family life. Such research com-
plicates generalizations about the impact offamily
change and raises several methodological cau-
tions about what can be compared and controlled
for in analyzing family variations and outcomes.
When I was invited to contribute an article sum-
marizing recent work and new directions in his-
torical research on families, my first thought was
to focus on the contributions of historians to the
understanding of contemporary families. Almost

Intergenerational diversity is a universal fact in sustainability and today’s work environment.
Current studies seek to find differences that exist between these generational groups that
coexist, cooperate, and sometimes compete in business organizations. Sixteen focus
groups have taken place, four for each generation to find the differences that may exist
depending on that group membership. Specifically, the psychological empowerment and
psychological flexibility variables have been analyzed, which have already shown their
relevance to improve performance. Results show differences between the older generations
(BB and Gen X) and the younger ones (Gen Y and Gen Z).

INTRODUCTION
The development of the Internet and data analysis (Geczy et al., 2014), the abundance of
information (Southwell, 2005), the globalization (Mark, 1996), the growing interest in diversity
(Guajardo, 2014), the increased consumer power (Kucuk, 2008), or what is known as the
sharing economy (Belk, 2018), all represent deep changes which are affecting people and
organizations to a great extent. This environment is now defined as VUCA (Whiteman, 1998),
an acronym of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity.
Companies are responding to this new environment in very different ways. One of the
most common is the intensification of work, which is understood both as the hours worked

IDS 400 The Four General Education Lenses
Each time we approach a question or project, we are informed by certain perspectives, or “lenses.” At
any given time, we are looking through multiple lenses, but often, one may be more dominant than the
others. Throughout your academic journey, these lenses coincide with disciplines or fields of study. Here
at SNHU, we’ve prioritized four of these lenses: the Humanities, History, the Sciences, and the Social
Sciences. Professionals in these fields all ask questions in order to gain information, but they may ask
them in different ways that will help them examine different aspects of a topic. We can think of these as
four different telescopes, and each lens has different characteristics. Thus, depending on the lens we are
looking through, the cultural artifacts we encounter—the constructed items that convey the
benchmarks of a particular culture or social group—will tell a different story.
The Humanities
At the core of the humanities is human creativity, and they explore the things that humanity creates and
how they offer insight into the way people experienced their present, interacted with their culture, and
comprehended abstract concepts and big questions about humanity’s place in the universe. The
humanities broaden perspectives and promote an understanding of multiple experiences, cultures, and
values through various mediums of creative human expression—such as literature, fine art, dance,
photography, philosophy and religion, film and television, music, even the internet and social media—
many of which are taught as separate academic disciplines. Within the humanities, both the artist’s (or
creator’s) intent and audience reception of a creative artifact are considered to help understand cultural
values and why they matter. They celebrate cultural diversity while also highlighting cultural similarity.

History
Many of us are familiar with history as being a list of dates, events, and people to memorize, but history
is so much more than simply dates and memorizing facts. Your primary exposure to history could have
been in grade school required classes or in documentaries about subjects you find interesting. There is
so much more to history, however. History tells the stories of our past to help us better understand how
we got to the present. In addition to dates, events, and people, history encompasses first-hand accounts
of experiences that include artifacts from an era (tools, clothes, toys, etc.), letters or diaries from people
who lived during a certain time, documents from a time period, photographs, and, when possible,

This study examines hypotheses of attitude transmission across three ideological domains
(gender roles, politics, religion) to access the adequacy of direct socialization, status
inheritance, and reciprocal influence models in a developmental aging perspective. Data
are from 2,044 individuals, members of three generation families, grouped to form
parent-youth (G2-G3) and grandparent-parent (GJ-G2) dyads. Results suggest, first, that
there is little convergence of parent-child attitudes with age when viewed cross-sectionally.
Second, status inheritance processes do account for a substantial amount of observed
parent-child similarity, but parental attitudes continue to significantly predict childrens'
orientations after childhood. Third, child influences on parental attitudes are relatively
strong and stable across age groups, while parental influence decreases with age, although
the exact pattern of influence varies by attitude domain.

Factors Favoring Intercultural Sensitivity
-- In times of increased students’ mobility worldwide at the tertiary level, preparing them to function in an international and intercultural context is one of the major goals of higher education. In line with this concern, scholarly findings across the globe express concern about the low level of interaction between domestic and international students; ergo, a corresponding increase in intercultural sensitivity on the part of the students is consequently highly required. Hence, the research objective of this study is to compare freshmen’ level of intercultural sensitivity based on seven recurrent factors found in the literature. The population of this study was freshmen from an International College in Bangkok, Thailand. The sample method used was convenience sampling. The research instrument was the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS). Results suggest that international college freshmen exhibit a high level of intercultural sensitivity as measure by the ISS. Data also showed that there is a statistically significant difference in the level of intercultural sensitivity based on two factors only, namely, nationality, and international friendships. From the findings, it could be recommended to provide intercultural courses for domestic students in order to widen their worldview repertoires, and to engineer intercultural trainings that enable both domestic and international students to go beyond mere contact, and encourage them to forge meaningful and long-lasting relationships with culturally different others

EVS at Man-Machine & Values Workshop
On November 14, Ton Wilthagen organized the seminar "Man-Machine & Values", with the central premise on how human values can be embedded in human-technology interaction. Present slides are the contribution of the Tilburg EVS-team to this seminar. We give a recent update of values across Europe (using the 2017 EVS data), show findings on polarization, and show what the Netherlands think of technology (case: social media). This presentation was used at the Brown Bag Lunch at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) at The Hague, and at the Sociology Colloquium at Tilburg University to update scholars about the upcoming data release of the European Values Study 2017, of which the Netherlands is part of.
European Values Study at Night University 2017
The theme of Night University 2017 at Tilburg University was "Back to the Future". Because of this theme, the Dutch theme of the European Values Study decided to present on the question whether younger people these days have become more conservative - i.e. less postmaterialist - than age cohorts decades back. At least in the US, this concerns seem to be widely shared, not in the least because since the election of Donald Trump. After crunching several waves of the EVS, we showed that young people show, generally, more postmaterialistic values than the same cohorts several decades ago. There is, however, one difference. On the so-called Inglehart materialist-postmaterialist survey items, there is a shift towards more materialist responses. As we are presently collecting new EVS-data, we can update in a few months whether this shift towards materialism among younger age cohorts was an anomaly, or whether value change has been initiated already one decade ago.

change, and increasing global population, crop yield and quality need to be improved in a sustainable way over the coming decades. Genetic improvement by breeding is the best way to increase crop productivity. With the rapid progression of functional
genomics, an increasing number of crop genomes have been sequenced and dozens of genes influencing key agronomic traits have been identified. However, current genome sequence information has not been adequately exploited for understanding
the complex characteristics of multiple gene, owing to a lack of crop phenotypic data. Efficient, automatic, and accurate technologies and platforms that can capture phenotypic data that can
be linked to genomics information for crop improvement at all growth stages have become as important as genotyping. Thus,
high-throughput phenotyping has become the major bottleneck restricting crop breeding. Plant phenomics has been defined as the high-throughput, accurate acquisition and analysis of multi-dimensional phenotypes
during crop growing stages at the organism level, including the cell, tissue, organ, individual plant, plot, and field levels. With the rapid development of novel sensors, imaging technology,
and analysis methods, numerous infrastructure platforms have been developed for phenotyping.
Deep Behavioral Phenotyping in Systems Neuroscience for Functional Atlasing a...
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) provides means to characterize brain activations in response to behavior. However, cognitive neuroscience has been limited to group-level effects referring to the performance of specific tasks. To obtain the functional profile of elementary cognitive mechanisms, the combination of brain responses to many tasks is required. Yet, to date, both structural atlases and parcellation-based activations do not fully account for cognitive function and still present several limitations. Further, they do not adapt overall to individual characteristics. In this talk, I will give an account of deep-behavioral phenotyping strategies, namely data-driven methods in large task-fMRI datasets, to optimize functional brain-data collection and improve inference of effects-of-interest related to mental processes. Key to this approach is the employment of fast multi-functional paradigms rich on features that can be well parametrized and, consequently, facilitate the creation of psycho-physiological constructs to be modelled with imaging data. Particular emphasis will be given to music stimuli when studying high-order cognitive mechanisms, due to their ecological nature and quality to enable complex behavior compounded by discrete entities. I will also discuss how deep-behavioral phenotyping and individualized models applied to neuroimaging data can better account for the subject-specific organization of domain-general cognitive systems in the human brain. Finally, the accumulation of functional brain signatures brings the possibility to clarify relationships among tasks and create a univocal link between brain systems and mental functions through: (1) the development of ontologies proposing an organization of cognitive processes; and (2) brain-network taxonomies describing functional specialization. To this end, tools to improve commensurability in cognitive science are necessary, such as public repositories, ontology-based platforms and automated meta-analysis tools. I will thus discuss some brain-atlasing resources currently under development, and their applicability in cognitive as well as clinical neuroscience.
Observation of Io’s Resurfacing via Plume Deposition Using Ground-based Adapt...
Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes
on Io’s surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes.
Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a groundbased telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large
Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io’s trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images
show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part
of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. The SHARK-VIS instrument ushers in a new era of high resolution imaging of Io’s surface using adaptive
optics at visible wavelengths.

The ability to recreate computational results with minimal effort and actionable metrics provides a solid foundation for scientific research and software development. When people can replicate an analysis at the touch of a button using open-source software, open data, and methods to assess and compare proposals, it significantly eases verification of results, engagement with a diverse range of contributors, and progress. However, we have yet to fully achieve this; there are still many sociotechnical frictions.
Inspired by David Donoho's vision, this talk aims to revisit the three crucial pillars of frictionless reproducibility (data sharing, code sharing, and competitive challenges) with the perspective of deep software variability.
Our observation is that multiple layers — hardware, operating systems, third-party libraries, software versions, input data, compile-time options, and parameters — are subject to variability that exacerbates frictions but is also essential for achieving robust, generalizable results and fostering innovation. I will first review the literature, providing evidence of how the complex variability interactions across these layers affect qualitative and quantitative software properties, thereby complicating the reproduction and replication of scientific studies in various fields.
I will then present some software engineering and AI techniques that can support the strategic exploration of variability spaces. These include the use of abstractions and models (e.g., feature models), sampling strategies (e.g., uniform, random), cost-effective measurements (e.g., incremental build of software configurations), and dimensionality reduction methods (e.g., transfer learning, feature selection, software debloating).
I will finally argue that deep variability is both the problem and solution of frictionless reproducibility, calling the software science community to develop new methods and tools to manage variability and foster reproducibility in software systems.
