population is online. But how did we

(YouTube.com). Since then video
consumption has been on the rise.
Currently, the average viewer consumes
100 minutes of digital videos per day
(Hayes, 2022).

Social Media
Facebook is currently the largest social media platform
in the world, having 2.4 billion users. Other social media
platforms including Youtube and Whatsapp also have
more than one billion users each.
Outside of social networking, 80% of consumers make
buying decisions based on a friend’s social media post,
the era of virtual word-of-mouth recommendations is in
full effect. (Kowalewicz, 2022)

Conclusion
The internet and the online environment have changed tremendously
since their early roots in the 1950s and are still evolving in front of our
eyes.
The digital consumer always has many online tools at their fingertips,
they are exposed to many brands and choices online through targeted
advertisements and their video and social media consumption.
As digital marketers, we need to constantly learn and unlearn how we
interact within the online environment if we want to remain relevant to
our audience.
Understanding the trends and consumer online behaviour will allow
brands to stay ahead of their competitors.

Other social media platforms including Youtube and Whatsapp also have more than one billion users each. Outside of social networking, 80% of consumers make buying decisions based on a friend’s social media post, the era of virtual word-of-mouth recommendations is in full effect. (Kowalewicz, 2022)

  • 14. Conclusion The internet and the online environment have changed tremendously since their early roots in the 1950s and are still evolving in front of our eyes. The digital consumer always has many online tools at their fingertips, they are exposed to many brands and choices online through targeted advertisements and their video and social media consumption. As digital marketers, we need to constantly learn and unlearn how we interact within the online environment if we want to remain relevant to our audience.
