Editor's Notes

  1. Introducing… CLICK the SUN Cooling Tower! CLICK
  2. The SUN represents the world’s first cooling tower capable of NET ZERO Energy Consumption.…And showcases a complete solar panel and energy management package.CLICK
  3. CLICKWhen you evaluate a typical commercial HVAC building load profile…***CLICK***And assume an average North American solar exposure, as predicted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory…***CLICK***During peak load conditions, the SUN may require supplemental utility power to satisfy 100% of the fan power being drawn. ***CLICK***However, for the majority of operating hours, more solar power will be generated than fan power consumed.Over the course of a year, it’s highly likely that many SUN towers in North America will have a NET ZERO energy profile! CLICK
  4. We all know that Seattle is going to have a lower annual solar exposure compared to Miami…But with the SUN, even those installations that won’t achieve NET ZERO, are still producing a power “trim”, that will ALWAYS reduce the annual power requirements of the cooling tower.CLICK
  5. CLICKThis innovative design combines a complete factory supplied controls system to deliver and monitor the solar power supply and includes complete local capacity controls. CLICKA strategically located solar panel array on top of the fan deck for maximum solar panel density…CLICKAnd fan wall technology to maximize airflow and cooling tower tonnage.CLICK
  6. So why should you, the engineering community, and owners, all consider the SUN cooling tower?***CLICK***First, it provides an opportunity for NET ZERO annual fan energy consumption.***CLICK***Additionally, the SUN can provide a building with those hard to come by LEED points.***CLICK***There are significant Federal and State tax credits and deductions - *pause* - with details to follow later in this presentation. ***CLICK***All this, and the SUN requires no additional steel support and very limited additional plan area.CLICK
  7. Let’s discuss the solar panel technology:***CLICK***The SUN utilizes Polycrystalline solar cells – polycrystalline solar technology is a staple in today’s solar market, as they are both reliable and readily available. ***CLICK***These panels are arranged to maximize the solar panel density on the top of the fan deck. The tiered bracket system utilizes a change in elevation to minimize shadows cast on adjacent panels. There are two SUN models in today’s product introduction that we’ll go over in detail in a few minutes. The larger SUN tower is equipped with (12) 250 Watt panels for a combined 3,000 Watts. The smaller SUN tower is equipped with (9) 250 Watt panels for a combined 2,250 Watts. ***CLICK***Each panel has its own micro-inverter, which converts the solar power generated to a usable AC power supply. ***CLICK***
  8. New for the SUN ***CLICK*** are Ziehl-Abegg high efficiency direct drive fans and motors. These Electronically Commutated, or EC fan motors for short, are located in two rows across the fan deck. CLICKEC motors completely eliminate the need for an external starter or VFD,and the parasitic energy that they consume. Speed is controlled via a 0-10 Volt or MODBUS control signal, and the EC motors have all the integral components to provide variable speed capacity control and energy savings.CLICK
  9. CLICKThis orientation minimizes the air side static pressure drop through the solar panel array.CLICKAnd it allows the SUN to support the maximum number of solar panels per the given footprint or plan area. CLICK
  10. The SUN mirrors the AT warranty that you’re all familiar with today. CLICKThe drive system, which remember, lacks any bearings, belts, or sheaves, is warranted for a period of 5 years on all SUN towers.CLICKAnd like the AT, when you select and purchase any stainless steel option, such as a 304 stainless steel cold water basin, the entire unit is warranted for the full 5 years.CLICKNew for the SUN are the solar components. The panels are warranted for 5 years, and the electrical components, including the SUN Panel, follow Evapco’s standard 1 year electrical component warranty.
  11. The SUN comes standard with a factory mounted control panel. There are digital displays on the panel cover that show instantaneous Solar Power Generated and Fan Power Draw.CLICKIncluded in the SUN Panel is an Ethernet-based communication module that allows the owner to access a website and gather real-time data on solar panel functionality, power draw, and trending.CLICK
  12. ***CLICK***In addition to monitoring and directing solar energy, the SUN control panel provides everything the customer needs for local capacity control AND remote capacity control. Toggling between the two is as simple as using the selector switch mounted on the control panel door. CLICKA thermocouple ships loose for mounting in the field by the installing contractor. This thermocouple is to be field wired into the SUN Panel, and a 0-10 volt transmitter, shown in blue on the right of the screen, converts the temperature into a fan speed set point. The owner can easily adjust the local set point ***CLICK*** (pause) by turning the dial to his desired temperature setting. CLICKThe SUN panel is also configured for remote temperature control functionality. In this mode, one selector switch on the SUN panel is turned to “BAS”, and the other is turned to the control signal feed, 0-10 volt, or Modbus.CLICK
  13. Wiring the SUN tower is straight forward.CLICKThe electrical contractor only needs to pull single point high voltage power into the SUN Panel.CLICKThe fan motors are completely wired at the factory to a common fan distribution panel. Solar panel microinverters are factory wired to a solar panel disconnect. Simple field connection of the solar panels to the microinverters is done during installation and will be shown in more detail in the coming slides. The transformer, which adjusts the solar voltage to the local utility voltage, is factory wired to the SUN Panel.CLICKThe Field wiring, aside from the main single point power, includes connecting the fan disconnect to the SUN panel, the solar disconnect to the SUN panel, and any incoming Modbus signal, as required.CLICK
  14. This wiring diagram illustrates the electrical components and the wiring requirements of the SUN tower. It’s important to remember that every component is factory supplied. Including: ***CLICK*** The solar disconnect, ***CLICK*** SUN Panel, ***CLICK*** Fan distribution panel and disconnect, ***CLICK*** the transformer to convert the solar power into a usable voltage, ***CLICK*** and the thermostat, which needs to be field mounted and is required for the local capacity control functionality. CLICKThere are three incoming feeds that the customer is responsible for: ***CLICK*** Main high voltage utility power, ***CLICK*** the Ethernet internet connection for solar start-up and remote monitoring capability, ***CLICK*** and for remote capacity control, either a MODBUS or 0-10V control feed. All components shipping on common sections are factory wired. Connections that cross over a rigging seam will be field wired. CLICK
  15. Let’s step through the sequence of events required to operate the SUN:CLICKSolar energy is captured on the solar panels, where it creates a DC power supply.CLICKThe DC solar power travels through an inverter, where it’s converted to 208 volt/3 phase/60 hertz AC power.CLICKThis AC power is sent to a factory mounted transformer, which steps up the voltage, if necessary, to match the local utility power supply, for example 460 volt. CLICK
  16. CLICKAfter traveling through the transformer, the power is directed to the SUN Control Panel, where it travels to a fan distribution panel and disconnect. CLICKIf the solar power generated does not meet the fan power draw, it is supplemented by the utility power.CLICKIf the solar power generated exceeds the fan power draw, the excess is directed back to the facility for use elsewhere.CLICK
  17. In summary… CLICKSolar Energy is captured….Converted to a usable power supply…And it attempts to satisfy the fan energy requirement. Utility power is required near design load, and excess energy is sent back to the building for use by other energy consumers, during most off-peak conditions. CLICK
  18. Elaborate report functionality is readily available through the web based interface. Here you see one view of the report feature, illustrating a one week graph of solar power generated for a SUN tower that is located at Evapco’s Maryland Headquarters.***CLICK***First, you’ll find the current status of the system. In this case, the SUN tower has all 12 solar panel micro-inverters functioning properly, and the system is normal. You’ll also see the current weather.***CLICK***This seven day graph shows the total solar production each day, over the course of a week.***CLICK***On the right of the screen you’ll see cumulative kilowatt hours of energy produced for the current day, week, month, and life of the SUN tower. ***CLICK***Under the “VIEW” tab, you can even narrow energy production down to individual panels. CLICK
  19. Besides the online report feature, other highlights include peak power production statistics and individual panel functionality- a feature where the owner can easily view the productivity of specific panels. At the bottom of the screen you’ll also see an image that shows the owner his carbon offset from the electricity saved, and the equivalent number of trees, or hopefully a forest in a few years, that he’ll eventually save. CLICK
  20. LEED buildings require engineers and design/build contractors to “think outside the box” in incorporating the latest environmentally responsible features. The SUN can assist in achieving the minimum standards to earn credits in three different categoriesCLICKInnovation in designCLICKEnergy and atmosphere, optimized energy performanceCLICKAnd Energy and atmosphere, renewable energy production. For an owner looking to obtain a high level of LEED certification, having the choiceto utilize the SUN and pick up even one additional credit, could be an irresistible opportunity. CLICK
  21. In addition to the energy savings and LEED incentives, ***CLICK***Solar technology is currently the beneficiary of a significant 30% Federal tax credit on the solar panel components of the SUN.This package includes the Solar Panel Array, SUN Control Panel, and the supports and wiring.***CLICK***Check with a local tax professional for additional, and sometimes very significant, state tax deductions and depreciation that can further incentive the SUN.You’ll see an example at the end of this SUN presentation that highlights the significance of tax credits – and how they can be the icing on the cake of a successful SUN sale! CLICK
  22. There are two NEW installation considerations that are unique to the SUNCLICKThe first is orientation. To produce the maximum amount of solar energy possible, the SUN tower should be orientated so that the panels face SOUTH. Alternate orientations will reduce the total solar exposure.CLICKEven though the SUN requires no additional steel support compared to an equivalently sized AT, the second consideration is the plan area required by the solar panels. In addition to clearances required for airflow, some additional clearance is required for the overhang of solar panels, both next to solid obstructions, as well as multiple SUN towers adjacent to each other.CLICK
  23. Like the SUN-19-611, the larger SUN model also has additional layout considerations.CLICKFor maximum solar power generation, the solar panels need to be oriented SOUTH. . CLICKAnd there are additional layout considerations due to solar panel overhang on the fan deck. CLICK
  24. Installation is relatively simple with a significant portion of the mounting hardware, disconnects, and control panels factory installed by EVAPCO.Due to shipping height limitations, the SUN tower will ship in three sections. ***CLICK***The basin ships like a typical AT tower.***CLICK***The casing section ships by itself and is equipped with lifting ears.***CLICK***The fan section comes rigged with solar panel mounting brackets and inverters. Fan motors are pre-wired to a fan distribution disconnect, and the grounding wires are coiled for quick field connection.CLICK
  25. Most brackets arrive factory mounted.CLICKThe exception are small outer “wings” that extend past the 12’ shipping width and require minimal hardware and labor to attach to the main structure. CLICK
  26. Solar Panel assembly is also very simple:***CLICK***Evapco Field Service personnel will be present during the final assembly of the solar package components, which takes place on site, prior to rigging.***CLICK***This includes the solar panels, which are are relatively light weight and are intended to be mounted at grade.CLICKWires on the back of each solar panel easily snap into the inverters.CLICKGrounding wires are factory installed throughout panel array and the termination needs to be run to the SUN Control panel.CLICK
  27. Lifting lugs are strategically located between banks of solar panels and around fan cowls, so that when taught, do not interfere with the mounted solar panels. At this point, the fan section can be mounted to the casing section, and the combination can be lifted to the roof as one piece – the typical two-piece AT style lift design.CLICK
  28. For less than a $10,000 premium, you and your consulting engineer can provide the owner with a cooling tower solution that has***CLICK***The potential for NET ZERO Annual energy usage…***CLICK***Factory mounted controls…***CLICK***A product that can assist in securing extremely valuable LEED points.***CLICK***Year one, and sometimes annual, tax credits and deductions on the capital equipment.***CLICK***And a sustainable energy solution.CLICK
