In this document, the student discusses how they used new media technologies in creating a teaser trailer for their film project called "Enigma". They discuss how their teaser trailer follows conventions for duration, editing style, use of sound, text/graphics, and narrative information. They also discuss how their poster and magazine cover adhere to typical formatting conventions. Finally, they analyze how their film incorporates genre conventions for characters, settings, iconography, and camerawork commonly seen in thriller films, using the film "Shutter Island" as a key point of inspiration.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
3. Duration
The duration of our teaser trailer was 1:14 seconds in time and although this is
slightly longer than we planned for it to be in the first place it still follows the
conventions of a typical teaser trailer as a typical teaser trailer is 30-90 seconds
long for example the teaser trailer for gone girl is 1:27 seconds long. Teaser
Trailers are usually only 30-90 seconds to not give away too much of the
storyline and because the producers of the film want to attract the audience
and make them want to find out more about the film and potentially go view it
in the cinema when the film comes out.

4. Editing Style
Our teaser trailer overall is edited mostly in a montage manor however certain sections
do have some continuity editing to help with the flow of the teaser trailer and to
help add realism to the trailer. In most of the teaser trailers our group looked at for
inspiration montage editing was in place for example in the teaser trailer for "prisoners"
and "shutter island". On a whole scheme of things our teaser follows the editing
conventions of a typical teaser trailer as the whole duration is a large montage made
up of significant sections of the scenes which would be in the film.
Montage sequence: prisoners
Montage sequence: Enigma
5. Use of sound
The use of sound was very important in our teaser trailer as it was used to
create atmosphere and it was used to push the genre of the film to the
audience. We used a backing track made on garage band for both of the
sections of our teaser trailer. We did not use a voice over in the whole of
our teaser trailer however there are elements of voice over which were
heavily edited to add a surreal effect. The pace of our teaser trailer
was amplified by the soundtrack, in the beginning of the teaser a calm music
was used for the backing track but when joey goes missing the music takes a
more fast paced stance than in the beginning of the teaser.
6. Text and graphic
elements
In our final product we did not use many titles to display the names of our
characters on screen. However we did use titles to emphasize the message
of our film and too push the thriller genre of our film. We displayed the
tagline of our film in by using on screen titles the first section of the tagline
was displayed after joey was kidnapped, we did this to create a sense of
tension and because we looked at the teaser trailer of prisoners in which the
titles are also displayed in a similar way.
Enigma Prisoners
7. Narrative information
We followed the conventions of a teaser trailer quite well in relation to
narrative information given to the audience in that we did not give away
too much about the film but we gave the audience enough information
so that they understand the general concept of our film for example the
fact that joey has been kidnapped and that George has to complete a
gruesome task or tasks to get his brother back.
9. Title
Tagline
Main Image
Background image
Billing block
Our poster was quite successful in following the conventions of film poster in that everything that is on our poster would be on a real film
poster. The title of our film is quite large and is very easy to see and make out for the audience because of its bold and distinctive font, the title for a film
poster has to be very clear and I think that we achieved this. The main image on the screen is the main character and this is quite typical of film
posters as it creates brand identity between different products in the marketing campaign. The billing block is also displayed in our poster quite clearly
and we followed the order of a real billing block from the poster of "the town". While making the final poster we took inspiration from the poster of
inception mostly for the background image and although our background image is not very similar we wanted to create the same sort of surreal effect
and that is why we added a mist and two characters resembling joey and the mysterious figure.
11. Magazine cover
Format conventions
Main image
Strap line

Barcode and

Cover lines
For our magazine cover we decided to choose the house style of empire magazine and we used many different covers as inspiration for
our magazine cover the one displayed on screen next to our final magazine cover we took a large amount of inspiration from, especially from
the main image of Jason Bourne with a gun, we wanted to replicate the same sort of thing on our poster as empire magazine is an action
themed film magazine and that is why we showed Andreas "George" in an action stance with a pistol in his hands. We also followed the
conventions of a magazine cover quite well as we have included everything a magazine poster must have for example a masthead and other
elements like the cover lines, strap lines etc. The alignments of our magazine cover are also quite accurate and all the text is aligned to a
good standard.
Masthead
13. Characters
Characters in thriller films are usually quite unique. Main characters in crime and mystery
thrillers usually have issues that they have to overcome throughout the film and this is the
case in our film as George quite obviously has his issues as he's just been pulled out of his
university to look after his brother joey as his parents have been involved in a fatal car
crash this traumatic experience is only amplified by his brother being kidnapped as he is
the only family he has left. Throughout the trailer it is apparent that George is distressed
with his brothers kidnaping and it is clear that he is determined to get him back. We took
inspiration for George from the main character from shutter island as he is also a troubled
individual and he is also determined to find a missing person throughout the duration of
the film.
Enigma Shutter Island
14. Setting
The setting for our film is a urban one, this is typical of crime and
mystery thrillers as these sorts of settings add to the tension factor
with the audience as they are under the impression that anything can
go wrong even in everyday life and in everyday settings. Urban
settings are used in thrillers we used for inspiration for example in
"prisoners" and "inception"
Enigma Inception
15. Iconography
There are many elements of iconography that we followed for crime and mystery thrillers in
our own production for example guns are quite usually present in psychological and
crime thrillers and this is the case in shutter island, a film from which we took large amounts
of inspiration from when producing and planning our teaser trailer. Low key lighting is also
an element of Iconography which is typical in every sub-genre of thrillers, low key lighting is
used in thrillers to set a disturbing and unknown tone to a scene. Lowkey lighting is also
very present in shutter island and we took inspiration from one scene especially, where the
audience can see nothing in the background, we achieved the same effect in one of our
scenes.
Enigma Shutter island Enigma Shutter island
16. Camerawork
Our camerawork was something that we really focused on when filming our teaser trailer
as camerawork is really important in the thriller genre as different shot types and angles
are used to portray characters emotions so that the audience can form a connection with
the characters. Throughout our research we found out that thrillers use high amounts of
close ups, this is to convey the characters emotion when they are in a situation which will
make them convey a lot of emotion through nonverbal communication many close ups
are used in the thriller shutter island and this is a film we took a lot of inspiration from
when choosing the close ups and when we are going to use them.
