2. Lighting
Using lighting in our film, we encountered many
problems, such as: finding the right light level,
differing brightness levels between shots, and
finding how to maintain these light levels.
We needed to use many lights to find just the
right level of light and in the end we decided to
use the sun as a backlight and have two movie
lights as a fill light and key light during the scenes
in which we filmed our character James.
During this I learnt how maintain light levels, and
adjust the brightness using a mirror to reflect
light. In the end, we used high key lighting in our
film to help present the film visually.
6. Microphones
In our preliminary task, we had many problems with sound
e.g. constant microphone static, too much ambience and
not enough volume with the dialogue and non-diegetic
sound.
We did have to go back and reshoot all of the scenes
which had our character James in as the sound was not
working in the editing software, this was due to a defective
lead plugging into the microphone. The first time we filmed,
we used a boom microphone, which we held either above
or below the shot.
However, there were times in which we forgot to activate it
and also it had the defective lead. So the second time we
filmed we used clip microphones so we could literally clip
them on and start, with no lead issues.

9. Cameras
During our preliminary task, we all learnt the basic use of the camera so
we were able to carry this information from the preliminary to the actual
coursework.
However, as our film required a throw in focus on the shot of the
characters Charlie and Joe from the side, we ensured that we acquired
a Panasonic HD camera which was capable of this, so we all learnt from
this how to throw focus using a HD camera, we did this using the control
on top of the camera, which we adjusted until the blue aura on the
display of the camera was around what we needed to focus on, we
decided to do this when Daniel constructed the storyboard to show the
reaction shots of the gangsters one at a time.
We also developed our skills in tripod based and also handheld
movement as we all operated the camera at some point. Our crab
around the car was handheld, which wasn't very effective as it was very
jerky and unsteady. However, the dolly out shot down the corridor was
done handheld and that was very effective, mostly due to the calmer
atmosphere inside the house and the even terrain.
12. Editing
Yet again, during our preliminary task, we all learnt the
basic use of the editing software ‘Adobe Premiere
Elements’ so we were able to carry this information from
the preliminary to the actual coursework.
However, our film required us to put filters on the film to
match the crime atmosphere e.g. at the Warner
Brothers’ animation, we put a filter on it to darken it and
also we had to put advanced titles on e.g. the ‘Warner
Brothers Presents’ title that rolled up with the sky at the
opening shot of the film.
We learnt how to do all of these features as well as built
on the basic cutting and other knowledge that we
already possessed.
13. This is an example of our learning of editing, we
faded this in and out and also put a dull filter on it to
match the sincere atmosphere of the film.
