Demographic data is used in film marketing to target audiences most likely to find a film appealing and profitable. Films typically target those with disposable income, like educated young adults. Good Will Hunting was aimed at and appealed to young mature adults as its themes were relatable to them, while Dead Man's Shoes targeted an older audience who could understand its bitter themes. The document examines using demographic statistics to determine the intended audience for a drama film, concluding educated youth aged 15 and up across religions, ethnicities, and social classes in developed countries would best relate to the film's exploration of modern societal issues.
This analysis is based on the drama movie that I'll be making. It includes references of how the people responded and how ill refer these in the movie.

1. The Introduction To Demographics
Demographics are essentially a method of direct marketing, developed to insure the most profitable outcome, weather that be
through money or other means that require demographics.
Demographics are used in film to attract a particular type of audience. Film is a reliable channel to target the more well off
sections of the population with good amounts of disposable income. Disposable income is the money coming in from a work paid
job that is left over after paying all the essentials, rent, food, heating, tax, debts, car insurance, things like that.
The Cinema going Audience is one of the most sought after sectors of the population. Meaning there is big potential money from
a big potential audience. Cinemagoers typically have good education levels, with cinema it’s a good idea to target the people in
higher education prior to the uneducated.
They look at the
statistics witch show
them the ideal
audience to market.
They then know how
to advertise to that
related audience
witch intern gets
people in seats.
2. The statistics
The 2014 figures show the male to female ratio is about the same witch is suppressing as the female population is slightly larger
than the male audience. Obviously these are estimates based of statistics so the percentages may be a little skewed but they
show enough evidence to suggest that the male and female ratio is the same.
I need to take into account that my film is a drama and this statics only show the majority. Unfortunately I couldn't’t find any
tables or statics for a drama film but I imagine that they follow the same procedure as every other film does with demographics.
Looking at other drama films that I feel are as closely represented as mine. I can get an understanding of what sort of audience I
would need to be targeting. Before I go into any of that I my preferred target audience is young educated students with plenty of
disposable income. Because I feel that Shane Meadows’s Dead Mans shoes and Good Will Hunting is the closest representation
of my film If it were to be real product . I will use these films to get a rough idea on what target audience I would be looking at.
3. Good Will Hunting and Dead Man’s Shoes
Good Will Hunting was a commercial success, winning an Academy award for best screen play of 1998, box officering a total of
225.9million dollars up to date. The film was best served for young mature adults as it related to them most and they could fully
understand the emotions generated on screen because it was so relatable.
Dead Man’s Shoes a British film released in 2004 was aimed at a much more mature older audience because to be able to
appreciate the film you need to be able to understand the bitterness and deep sense of rage the character constantly expresses
through is proxemics and facial movement so that when the dramatic scenes are shown the viewer is able feel the direct
emotions that are intended by the director.
All films have an intended audience. Nowadays its all about the most profitable audience/the majority audience. This means the
film will appeal to a majority in some way but because it has no dedicated audience type it lacks in quality of structure and
seems all over the place. Very good example of the
difference in emotions and
feelings these two films may
have. Everything down to the
colors suggest the feelings and
environment these two films are
set in.
4. This is why I have focused on one dedicated audience. I would want my final product to be as best in story and structure as it can
be. Meaning not everyone from different backgrounds, ethnicity, religion’s Exeter, are going to appreciate the produce’s intended
emotions because they cant relate.
That being, there is still an intending audience. Preferably I feel young uneducated and educated people would get the best
representation from my film. The title sequence however may not be exiting enough to draw attention for those particular
minds. I remember a quote from somewhere stating that if the first two minuets don’t draw you in why’s it worth watching the
rest of the (X) amount? Therefore If I were to make this film into a full product I would use the idea from Gone Girl. In Gone Girls
title sequence they introduced the film with a very sinister abstract monologue that “drags” the audience into the film because
of how affective the monologue is. Then the title sequence begins. 2005’s Sin City also does this by having a captivating short
story before the title sequence. I would have a short scene before the credits to involve the viewer in enough to flow through the
title sequence.
The reason I feel the youth Educated/Uneducated would get the best benefit is because the story within the sequence is closely
related subjects currently going on in there minds and life. I feel the film would also relate to Uni students as its similar to there
situations. It would be interesting to see the differences between nowadays youth struggles and the older generations youth
struggles. I recon the older generation would be able to relate to the film but wouldn't’t fully understand. It may also educate
them on how there children may be feeling as this film is a form of expression that doesn't seem to be spoken about.
My intended audience
5. My Final intended audience
My final intended audience.
1. All religious back grounds.
2. All ethnicity's
3. Age would be from the ages of 15 upward.
4. All educated backgrounds preferably people who have been through school to secondary then collage.
5. Backgrounds would be working class and also upper class because the film tackles with these two differences in
backgrounds and opinions.
6. Country's would have to be MEDC country's as it reflects on current society's within these more economically developed
country’s. The film would’t work in a country that doesn't’t have a induction system that decided how good your life may be
in future. They wouldn't be able to relate so the viewing experience would be difficult to follow with the intended emotions.
This type of audience would open up many possibility's. Its not massive to the point where I am trying to please everyone, its just
the right size to be respected as a good quality film for its intended audience. I feel my product would be suitable for the
intended audience above and from all the evidence I have found and examples from other films. I have always felt that my target
audience would be the youth educated and uneducated population because I always had them in mind whilst I was making the
film from the start.
