2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Throughout the research and construction stages of
our media products we regularly gained feedback
from our target audience as this helped us in
deciding how to make our trailer, poster and
magazine better and look more professional.
The feedback we gained was very helpful as it
allowed us to change things to make them better.
Also, this helped us see what our target audience
wanted to see in this type of genre of media
products.
3. Feedback for our trailer
Aishah: ‘The beginning of the trailer is too
jumpy the cuts are too fast paced’
This feedback allowed us to re edit the start
of the trailer to ensure that the edits were
not as quick and direct as before, therefore
we have been able to make the transitions
much smoother.
4. Feedback for our trailer
Aishah: ‘The intertitles which say an unmissable
blockbuster go by too quickly and are not really
necessary as something else could be used in their
place to highlight the actual storyline.’
This audience feedback helped us a lot in the editing
of the trailer as we were able to change the intertitles
and instead have them saying things like ‘all she
wanted was to marry the man of her dreams’ This
allowed us to show what each main character wants
out of their lives and how they aim to achieve what
they want.
5. Feedback for our trailer
Shanita: ‘The editing throughout the trailer
is good however the scenes themselves
could perhaps flow better’
This feedback was very helpful as we
deciding to make the scenes shorter to
ensure they flowed better and explained
the story more clearly.
6. Feedback for our trailer
Elisha: ‘The voiceover could be improved
or taken out as it seems unnecessary’
This feedback was something which we
found many of our target audience said,
therefore we decided to take out the
voiceover as it was not needed in the film
trailer as we used the intertitles more
effectively to explain the story more clearly.
7. Feedback for our trailer
This feedback showed us
that the editing of our
trailer did not make the
storyline clear, therefore
we changed the editing
to make it flow better. In
addition, this feedback
shows that a sub genre
of romance could be
made clearer.
8. Feedback for our trailer
This feedback that we
gained also highlights
that our trailer needs to
be edited more clearly to
show the relationships of
our character more
clearly.
9. The changes we made to our
trailer after getting
feedback…
We made the transitions smoother in order to
make the trailer flow better.
We changed some of the clips we used in
order to show the storyline better.
We changed the way in which the characters
were introduced and portrayed.
In the end, we deciding to focus the trailer on
Aaron rather than confuse the trailer by
looking at both Aaron and Kiran’s storylines.
10. Feedback for our poster
This feedback
which I got shows
that the image is
good and the
placement of it
as a whole is
what a poster of
this genre would
look like.
11. Feedback for our Poster
Shanita: ‘The white writing at the bottom
isn't very clear and perhaps the poster
could’ve included all of the main
characters.’
This feedback was helpful however, we
decided to keep the image as it was due to
the fact that is shows the romantic side to
the film more as the magazine is able to
focus more on Aaron.
12. Feedback for our Poster
This feedback shows that
our genre is not made
clear, however, this is due
to the fact that we
contrasted the genre for
the magazine to highlight
the Bollywood side of the
film and for the poster to
show the romantic side to
it.
13. Feedback for our poster
This feedback shows
that our poster
contains a good
image and placement
of it and also includes
good font sizes and
styles to show the title
of the film.
14. The changes we made to our
Poster after getting
feedback…
We changed the text as we had too
much information on it.
We changed the font from the original
poster to make it easier to read.
15. Feedback for our Magazine
This feedback shows that
our magazine is good as
it contains the
appropriate font styles
and sizes and has a
good image.
16. Feedback for our magazine
This feedback also
shows that our
magazine is effective in
portraying our film and
shows that it has been
done well.
17. Feedback for our magazine
Aishah: ‘The text’s line spacing is far to big and could
be made smaller, also too much information is on the
left hand side.’
This feedback was very helpful to us as it allowed us to
make the line spacing smaller and move the text
around to make it look more professional rather than
looking cluttered.
After changing our magazine we asked for feedback
again and this time people liked the magazine much
more as they felt it appealed to the target audience
much more.
‘I like the colours used they red titles matches Aarons
outfit very well. The image also relates to the image
very well.
18. The changes we made to our
Magazine after getting
feedback…
We changed the image which we had on
the poster originally, we changed it to a
photo of our character playing Aaron in
order to focus the trailer, poster and
magazine on Aaron and his storyline.
We changed the writing on the magazine
as we reduced the line spacing and also,
changed the placement of the text in
order to make sure it didn’t look too
informative.
19. Other feedback
This feedback was very helpful as it
showed that our poster, magazine and
trailer look professional.
