Â
Evaluation: Question 3
1.
2. OUR MEDIA PRODUCTS
Our group were asked to create a trailer, poster and magazine cover
for our coursework in media A2. For each of our products that we have
created, we have asked our friends and other students to feedback on
each of our products. From the feedback we got, we then read it
through and began to make the changes that needed to be improved
based on the feedback we got.
These were the three products that we produced and then got feedback
from:
3. POSTER FEEDBACK
This is the poster that was created by Fariha Khan
in our group, which also went with our film trailer.
This was the first draft that she created, before we
got the feedback . To make the poster, Fariha used
the generic conventions of a romantic drama which
was our chosen genre for our film. The colours
matched well with our genre because they are
bright and so it makes the audience feel calm and
happy. We hoped that these conventions will
appeal to our target audience and to the students
who will have looked at poster and given their
feedback. In one of our lessons we were asked to
show the other students our poster and then they
would give us feedback based on what they
thought. Based on what they thought went well and
what could be improved.
This is a picture I took of the feedback
which the students in our year gave us for
our poster. We asked three boys and three
girls to make it fair and asked them what
they thought was good about it and what
can be improved. One person said that it
was “bold and eye-catching” and that it
“looks like a real advertisement”. This was
what we wanted for our poster, so it will
stand out to our audience and for them to
think that this was a real film poster. We
also had some comments of improvement
which said that “there should be an age
rating and maybe a quote”. We took these
comments into account and worked on
adding what was missing.
5. MAGAZINE FEEDBACK
This is the magazine cover that was also
created by Fariha Khan, that also went with our
film trailer. It took a while to decide what kind of
image we wanted for the front cover because
we wanted it to stand out to our audience, so
they would want to read it. We decided on
having the two main characters together as the
film is about their relationship together. We
wanted Mufaro to be holding Sarah in that way
so show that she is his and that he is
protecting her. Fariha had trouble with the
colour of the background because she wasn’t
sure if it was too plain or the right colour to go
with the image. She had an idea to match the
text colour with Sarah’s dress so make it stand
out and fit with the generic conventions, we
also wanted it to be appealing to our audience.
This is a picture I took our the audience feedback
for our magazine. We asked the same people who
did feedback on our poster, to feedback on our
magazine as well to make it fair. All of the
students liked our magazine and all had
something positive to say, however, there were
more improvements mentioned. One student said
“can’t read the bottom text very well” this was
because the text was the same colour as Sarah’s
dress so it was hard for them to read. Another
student said that “the background looks weird”
we weren’t sure in what way it looked weird so we
didn’t know exactly what to change about it.
There were some good points that were made
such as “layout is good” and “the picture
matches the genre”, we were really pleased with
them comments because we wanted the audience
to notice the layout and what type of genre it was.
6. MAGAZINE AFTER FEEDBACK AND WHAT WE
HAVE LEARNT
This is the final draft of our magazine based on the audience feedback we got. As a group we sat down and went
through the feedback together and talked about what we could do to improve it. Changing the text at the bottom
was easy because we just had to make it bolder so it would stand out over her dress. Fariha also added a website
at the top where our audience can go for the online website for the people who prefer to read online. She also
added an extra in the corner to inform the audience what else will be included in the magazine. As for the
background we still weren’t sure on how we could change it because we didn’t want to make it look to busy or
dark, so we decided to keep it the way it was. We were really pleased with the text on the left because it stands out
with the colours and the font used which works well with the rest of the layout. During the process of editing our
magazine we learnt that to make it appeal to our audience we need to make sure that the text is bold so it stands
out and not to make it too busy with the same colours otherwise the audience wouldn’t be able to see it properly.
We also learnt that the background colour is very important because if it doesn’t look good with the rest of the
images and text then its not going to appeal to our audience. Also, we learnt that the audience identifies what kind
of genre it is by the colours, not just the image, so we made our text pink to match with the genre of romance and
love which is easy for our audience to identify easier.
This was the main image that
our group decided on, it has
the two main characters
holding each other so show
that this is a romance film.
Also, their body language is
important which shows that
they’re together and the
audience will easily identify
what kind of genre the film is.
The colour of the text is
important for the magazine
because it needs to appeal
to our audience. We learnt
that having the same colour
text as Sarah’s dress also
makes it appealing and
stands out more because
they match and both link to
the film genre.
7. TRAILER FEEDBACK
This is title for our trailer. The genre we chose for
our film trailer was a romance drama. We decided
to have the exact same colour and font of the title
as the poster to make it look appealing and so both
of the products match. Also, so the colour of the
title will match with genre of romance and love. In
the next slide I am going to be showing the types
of shots we have shown in our trailer and the edits
we have made from the feedback we got. Our trailer
is more like a teaser trailer because its only a
minute and a half long so not too much will be
given away. This will make the audience want to
know what will happen with the story of the two
characters and they will want to watch the film to
find out what happens next. We want our audience
to feel drawn in by the story of the teacher and
student affair. This is because it’s not a
stereotypical love story and so we want the story
to be appealing to our audience.
This is the audience feedback that we got
from the students in our media class. We
showed it to our class and asked them to
feedback on what they thought of it and any
improvements. We got a lot of positive
feedback such as “ really nice shots” and “
the fades of shots makes the trailer look real.
This is what we wanted for our trailer to have,
and for our audience to feel like this was a
real trailer. However, there were some
improvements to be made such as “very
short shots” and “too many flash edits”. We
agreed that some of the shots were too short
and talked about what we could do to make
them longer. Also, we are going to cut down
on some of the flash edits because we also
agreed that there were too many.
8. TRAILER SHOTS AND WHAT WE LEARNT FROM
THE FEEDBACK
This is one of the shots that got
some positive feedback and it was
an over the shoulder shot. This shot
looks good when two characters are
talking because we can see one of
the characters on the side and the
other character talking. From the
positive feedback on this, we learnt
that the audience notices these
types of shots and so we were happy
to have used them throughout the
trailer.
This shot also got positive feedback
because we used a fade to black
effect. We used this effect just
before the text on screen came up
because we wanted to add
something that would look good
before the text came up. Our
audience liked the fade effect, we
learnt that adding the effects makes
it look like a real trailer. We made
sure to add different effects in our
trailer to appeal to our target
audience.
This shot showed the location of
the setting in the trailer which got
good feedback because the
students said that the location
matched with the story. We learnt
that the location is very important
and that its better when it matches
with the story so the audience can
get a good understanding of it.
Also, this shot is good because it
shows all three of the characters in
one shot.
We learnt a lot from the feedback that we got from the trailer. We learnt how to add certain shots to make the
audience feel more engaged with the story and to make them feel like they are part of the drama. We also learnt that
adding effects such as fades and flash cuts make the trailer look more realistic. We worked on what our class said to
improve on and hoped that it was good enough for our audience to like. Some other improvements that we could’ve
done was to show an establishing shot of the school, to introduce the setting. We also thought we could’ve made
some of the shots longer to make the trailer longer because we feel like the trailer was a bit too short so we had to
extend some of them. Overall, we were very pleased with our final draft of our trailer and the audience feedback
really helped us to improve it and make it better for our target audience and to engage them.
9. WHAT WE LEARNT FROM THE FEEDBACK
OVERALL
Looking at all the feedback we got from the poster, magazine and trailer, I would say that it was mostly
positive feedback. Our group were really happy with the positive comments about our media products
because we know that it does appeal to our target audience and it engages them.
Poster: We got a lot of good feedback for our poster and we were really pleased with it because we wanted it to
look like real film poster. Our audience said that it was easy to identify what type of genre the film was just by
the main image and the colours used.
What we improved well on: We added a quote which made the poster look better and it matched with the trailer
because we included the same quote during the fade to black shots.
What we learnt: We learnt that matching the quotes in the media products work better because it will be easier
for the audience to identify. We also learnt that the colour scheme is important too because it needs to match
with the type of genre, for example our genre is a romance and our colour scheme is pink so it matches well
together.
Magazine: Once again we got good feedback from the students for our magazine. There were more
improvements for this product than the poster because it wasn’t completed as much as the poster, so there
were more things to improve on.
What we improved well on: We made the text at the bottom more bolder so it stood out more over the main
image. Also, we added extras at the side to show the audience what else will be in the magazine.
What we learnt: We learnt that making the text bolder makes it stand out more on the page and so it would look
more eye-catching. We also learnt that the main image needs to stand out for the audience so it has to be bright
and big enough for the page so the audience will easily notice it.
Trailer: We got more positive comments for the trailer than improvements. We were really pleased with the
feedback that we got because they liked our trailer and said that they would want to watch it at the cinema and
find out what happens next to the characters.
What we improved well on: Adding non-diegetic sound was a good thing we improved on because we found it
easy to add and our audience agreed that it matched with our genre.
What we learnt: We learnt how to use flash edits in our trailer to make it look more realistic and to use black
screens to add text on screen.
