2. ADVERTISING
Bands advertise their music videos in order to raise awareness for not
only the song, but also for their band’s brand as a whole. The main
reason music videos were first invented was as a form of self-
promotion. Therefore, by creating something engaging and eye-
catching which can be linked back to them, it helps create a band
persona for the audience. Therefore, how a music video is constructed
is important in order to give audiences a ‘feel’ for the band themselves.
3. ADVERTISING
Therefore, when creating my music video, I wanted to capture the
essence or persona of the band as best I could in the development of my
film and ancillary products.
In order to do this, I needed to encapsulate the central and identifiable
themes the band presents. These are (in my opinion):
- Purposefully imperfect vocals (no auto-tune)
- Cheeky, and sometimes rude, humour
- Poetic lyricism/message
4. SO, HOW DID I DO THIS?
In order to create work which mimicked the style of the band, whilst
still being entirely original and current with my content, I studied the
song I chose and the band’s work carefully in order to produce a music
video and two ancillary tasks which would collectively be effective
whilst, at the same time, remain true to the genre and artist whose music
I was working with.
5. MY ANCILLARY TASKS
With my ancillary tasks, I wanted to create promotional work for my
music video which would be released at a later date. By giving snippets
of the video’s themes, I hoped to be able to intrigue my audience and
excite them, so that upon the music video’s release, they would be
interested to see what the build-up had been leading to.
In addition, by viewing current trending posters and album designs, I
was able to create work which was fresh and original, whilst also being
inspired by already proven and successful artwork.
7. DIGIPAK
In my digipak, I used a piece of hand-drawn art and then, through
Adobe Photoshop, manipulated and modified the image in order to add
the colour on the wolf-face itself, and to create the background of the
image. I wanted the album to look quite minimalistic as, from my
research, I found that minimalism was attractive to audiences (within
reason), whilst the cartoon style was seen to be very popular in modern
pop/punk culture. Therefore, by incorporating both of these into my
final design I was able to create a successful front cover which catered
to different audiences.
8. As well as this, using a theme of ”sudden explosions of bright colour” in
both my ancillary tasks, I was able to deliver an upbeat tone which is in-
keeping with the style of the band, as well as the general feel to my film
(well, until the end anyway!)
11. POSTER
In my poster, by taking a picture of the band at a cemetery, I was able to
bring in Gothic themes to my work which suited the song. Also, by
having a circle of light in an otherwise greyscale image, I was able to
incorporate a message of finding light in darkness, which linked to my
music video but also to the band’s musical style as well.
12. IDENTIFIABILITY
This work linked into the film because all aspects of my coursework are
somewhat poetic in their message. I had a key message in all three
pieces of work (DP – “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” eyes-covered,
Poster – “finding light in darkness”, Film – general anti-prejudice/
discrimination themes), and this links to the poetic sense of the band’s
lyricism and style. I found this idea to be identifiable to the band, and
therefore connected to my desired audience of teenagers/young adults.
Due to the key messages I was presenting, it also set a good example to
them and offered fundamental lessons to the audience through it’s good-
natured and light-hearted presentation.
13. COMBINATION OF TASKS
The combination of my tasks was successfully linked together through
similar themes and conventions of the indie genre. Use of a similar,
bright, colour palette throughout my ancillary tasks fitted with the
“bright” nature of my film and the music itself (the video was filmed in
daylight and is mostly uplifting despite a dark and uncomfortable topic).
The common theme of wolves is also evident; i.e. use of a wolf
prosthetic in the film, cartoon wolf face in the Digipak, commonality of
wolves in Gothic literature and the presence of a visible church in the
poster.
14. HOW I STRENGTHENED MY TASKS
Throughout the devising process, I always made sure I was constantly
seeking to improve my work. I made various changes along the way
whilst still within the planning and creating stages after being advised
by my peers and others who viewed and fed back on my designs. For
example, after being told that my writing, “Beware the wolf” was not
not visible enough on my poster, I reduced the translucency so that the
red was still not entirely opaque, but could be read clearly at a further
distance. The ongoing feedback I was given helped me to develop the
most successful tasks and reassured me that the final work was effective
and delivered a powerful message to my audience.
