This document discusses how a media product represents social groups through its imagery. It analyzes the similarities and differences between an image from the author's magazine and one from "Kerrang" magazine. Both images represent the rock music genre and feature models wearing dark clothing with stern facial expressions, conveying the mood of rock. However, they differ in the angles of the shots - one is mid-shot while the other is low-angle, suggesting rock is powerful. The postures also differ, with one model resting on a guitar and the other standing straight.
3. Similarities of the two images
Based on the image of my main model and the model on the ‘Kerrang’
magazine, there are a range of similarities that I have identified.
Each of the models are wearing black-dominated clothing, which is a
traditional convention within the Rock genre. This is done deliberately to
express on the dark and superstitious nature of this genre of music. As well as
this, the facial expression is similar, as both make clear eye-contact with their
viewer, as well as appear to look stern and moody. This links with the colour,
as it proves that this is the natural mood that the Rock genre reflects to its
audience. As well as this, the shot type is very similar, being a close-up on
each image. This is done to display the facial expression and clothing of each
person.
4. Differences of the two images
Although there are several similarities between the photographs, I have also
identified on some differences between them. As both models represent
different magazines, I believe that they must be unique and adequate in their
own particular ways.
The angles in which both of the photographs are taken are different, as the
model from my magazine was taken at a mid-shot. In contrast, the image on
‘Kerrang’ magazine is taken at a low-angle, suggesting that Rock is a
dominating and powerful genre of music. If I were to take my photographs
again, I would have followed this convention, as it is a symbolic and
meaningful representation. The posture is another difference between both
of the magazines. With mine, the model is resting her head on the top of a
guitar. ‘Kerrang’ magazine have their model standing up straight, again
suggesting dominance.
