1. Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product
use , develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media ?
2. Inspirations
• Throughout the process of doing the video
and ancillary work I was inspired by many
different things , there are many
forms, conventions and intertexutal references
met in our video.
3. Opening
By having such a strong opening it was as if we were
making a ‘statement’ , the opening was very important
The opening of my music video was heavily influenced as we revealed our name and our song, I really liked
by the video of ‘N****s in Paris’ by Jay-Z and Kanye using this opening as they are new artists they need to
West . As a group we chose this because we thought it establish themselves and through the opening the
stood out, just like it did in the original video . audience were given a clear idea of who they were.
Furthermore our audience members would possibly be
able to recognise our video as they would be able to
link our video with the N****s in Paris video.
4. Fashion/Image
Our chosen Genre was pop and the image that the artist had was very important to me, because it
could become memorable and people would associate the item of clothing with the artist , e.g Nicki
Minaj – Pink wigs , Michael Jackson – One glove
I was strongly influenced by the looks of Little Mix, Stooshe, Janelle Monae and her androgynous
theme, these would be powerful to get our product across and that is why they were chosen for the music
video.
Janelle Monae is Onsie’s are in
known for her fashion at the
adrogynous style moment and are
of clothing usually worn by our
target audience
Both little mix and
stooshe give off a
bright, funky look filled
with lots of denim and
colour !
5. Music Video
Another intertextual reference was from Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” video , I liked the
way the way the coloured backgrounds were edited to the beat of the song which resulted
in quick changes giving it a “flash” effect , this is why we chose to incorporate this in our
video however put our artists on the coloured screen particularly because this was their
debut.
6. As I learnt , a music video is to PROMOTE the artist/s , this was done through using a
range of camera shots e.g establishing shots to show our location , but mainly through
close ups , medium close ups and mid shots . As NME are new artists they need to be
established the audience need to know who they are , which is a convention of many
music videos out there !! I would say we had quite a lot of midshots and medium close
ups because we are a duo meaning that most of our scenes were together , however
when we had our solo verses there were close ups of us by doing this allows the
audience to differentiate between the two and it benefit us as we try to promote our
product (ourselves).
7. Theory
• I think the main theory that was followed whilst doing our video , was Laura
Mulvey’s idea of ‘the male gaze’ . I definitely wanted to challenge this stereotype
of women being just eye candy in videos and used as sexual objects. That is why
we chose to dress in clothing that might not bee seen as attractive , especially in
our genre ( pop ) ironically through our androgynous look we were suppose to
resemble men so that the audience wouldn't focus on how we looked e.g sexy but
the importance of the lyrics. Our mise en scene was one of the strongest part of
the whole video , we were able to make a bold statement to everyone.
• Which brings me on to Andrew Goodwin , from his theory . Amplification was the
main idea that was followed , as a group our aim was to get the message of the
lyrics across , the message was “ not to be afraid” I believe we got this through to
our audience due to the fun loving nature of the video .
• I really enjoyed being able to challenge the conventions of a usual pop video in
which you usually see the female portrayed as an “object” and usually the lyrics go
with the song , it was really fun being able to be different and to show people
there's nothing wrong with being different !
9. • I feel that I met the conventions of the ancillary product , especially
the outside CD panel I had things such as the barcode , copyright
information and tracklisting.
• For my advert I was inspired by the Brandy and Monica CD as it had
a big , clear picture of them and I also liked the colour of their
background
• I really liked the CD cover of Graffiti 6 andI wanted to incorporate
some of their ideas into my CD, which link great !! As one of our
locations was in Mile End Skate Park , known for its graffiti art
, which as an excellent visual link between the ancillary and our
main product
• On my advert I wrote information on how to purchase the digipak
and where to get it from
• I also gave critical reviews to promote the album , which is what you
usually tend to see on posters and advertisements
