How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
3. Character.
..Darcy Jones
We had to create a new artist whom we could promote. In
order to do this we had to maintain her image throughout
both the main video and the ancillary texts.
We worked together to take into consideration all aspects in
which we could represent her character in both the music
video, album digipak and magazine advert, in order to
combine them to produce our whole media product.
4. We wanted Darcy Jones to be a strong,
independent female solo artist and in order for
this to come across to audiences she had to
look assertive and in control.

Throughout both the main product – music
video, and the ancillary texts – digipak and
magazine advert, we portrayed this assertive
and in control look by having the artist look
directly into the camera, whether this be in the
photo shoots or the filming of the music video.

By using this technique of having our artist
looking directly into the camera, the audience
can really connect with her.

5. Because the song we chose – ‘Skinny
Love’, is quite meaningful and the
narrative to our video includes a violent
relationship we also wanted our artist to
show a softer and more vulnerable side
to her character.

In order for this side of her character to come
across during the music video we filmed shots
of her looking away from the camera, focusing
on something else, to portray the sense she
was thinking deeply about an upsetting or
difficult time.
Similarly, in the photo shoot we varied the shots
of our artist and asked her to look away from
the camera to suggest a ‘dreamy’ look.

6. Another aspect of Darcy Jones character that
we wanted to portray was a more happy and
carefree side.

We represented some of these happy,
carefree times in black and white in the video
to show how they were past memories.
Similarly, we decided to use black and white
photos in the lyric book of the ‘backstage’ in
the recording of Darcy Jones single. These
show her as happy and having a good time
doing what she loves.

7. Text.. When it came to producing the print work
for our coursework we needed to create a
. text for ‘Darcy Jones’ that would become
recognised as her brand and which we
could then use throughout production.

This is the text that we created using Adobe
Photoshop. We used it here on the album
cover and again here on the magazine
advert. This helped with our artist promotion
as it combined both ancillary texts, making our
artist’s album recognisable as a product.

8. Style.
..
We wanted to give our artist a unique and vintage
style so that she stands out in the music industry. In order
for this image to come across we had to make sure this
style was displayed throughout all aspects of the video,
album and promotion.
9. We achieved a vintage look to the music video by editing it with an old
fashioned video footage effect in adobe premier.
We then created a similar effect on the album cover and magazine
advert so that our products worked well together and had the same style.
We did this by editing the
saturation and colour tones
to make them more grainy
and dull and then by
slightly blurring the image.

When it came to styling our
artist we wanted to keep her We wanted to use photos from the same
natural but with a unique and photo shoot for both the album and the
‘indie’ edge. We worked magazine advert as this was something

clothes she wore in both the two ancillary products along with the main
