Evaluation Question 1
1. EVALUATION: QUESTION 1- IN WHAT WAYS
DOES YOUR MEDIAPRODUCT USE, DEVELOP
OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS
OF REAL MEDIAPRODUCTS?
By Olivia, Ania and Danielle
2. Olivia’s Thriller Codes and Conventions (1)
Low Key Lighting
This shot appeared after the title was displayed and shows Viola (the character)
still in shock form what she just did.
The low-key lighting makes it hard to see the character’s full face, this enhances
shadows in the scene. The dark tones and colors of the scene can intensify the
effect the film has on the audience.
This code and convention is commonly used in thriller movies and we decided
to include it in our opening sequence so the audience can quickly identify the
thriller theme
3. Olivia’s Thriller Codes and Conventions (2)
Quick Cuts
This shot appeared after Viola (the character) had flashbacks of what happened
that night and started to hear the voices in her head.
The quick cuts help create a sense of tension and suspense in the scene. It also
represents the character, Viola, desperate struggle to escape her thoughts.
This code and convention is commonly used in thriller movies and we decided to
include it in our opening sequence so the audience can quickly identify the
intense scene
4. Ania’s Thriller Codes and Conventions (1)
Shadows
Shadows is one of the most typical ways of meeting the codes and
conventions of a thriller. This is usually achieved by low-key lighting which
sets an aura and dark atmosphere. Shadows can often create tension and
eeriness within a scene, this is ideal within a thriller or horror movie as it
builds suspense and gains a reaction from the audience. In Perception
shadows and low key lighting is our main technique in this scene to build
suspense and tension, it has allowed the audience to understand that
something dark/ sinister has occurred.
5. Ania’s Thriller Codes and Conventions (2)
Non Diegetic whispers
Having non diegetic sound of murmurs and whispers in the background
creates a sense of paranoia, especially since the ‘Viola’ has committed a
crime without getting caught, it would be fitting to have her be paranoid.
The whispers also have a sinister touch to it and create tension and the
emotion of fear from the character ‘Viola’.
6. Danielle’s Thriller Codes and Conventions (1)
Tense music
The music at the very beginning is slow paced and flows well with the motion of the
camera and the appearance of the credit on-screen. The music that was chosen for the
opening sequence was by David O’Brien Lair 2. The music has sweeping textures and
the lack of percussion adds to the ominous atmosphere of the film. The pulsing drone
builds when the film title appears alerting the audience of the title’s significance. As the
sequence continues and more is revealed about the main character (Viola), the tempo
of the music grows faster as Viola begins to unravel, her mind comes undone and her
actions quicken. This is shown in the sped up jump cuts. The abrupt ending coincides
with Viola completely going insane. The music follows the codes and conventions of a
thriller film as it has low tones and creates a sinister atmosphere.

Minimal Dialogue
One element of our film that does not follow thriller film codes and
conventions is the fact that there is minimal dialogue. This adds to the
dark and gloomy aura of the film. The lack of dialogue gives the
audience insight into the empty pit that is Viola’s mind. It allows the
character to show how she has become devoid of emotion.
