IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP
OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?
Question One
Our product uses conventions of the theme we have decided to use in many ways; a few
scenes from our final piece can show that we did, evidentially we used the conventions
correctly and appropriately. For example, the interrogation scene uses the lighting, props
and correct camera angles in order to give an ominous and macabre effect. We used low-
key (Figure 1), lighting in order to exclude the main characters surroundings which would
raise fear for the viewer (if in the perspective of the character, point-of-view).
We used shots and camera angles which were tilted and excluded a lot of the
interrogators features; this was effective as this could cause the viewer to want to know
more about this vague character. In one of our shots, we placed the camera by the ceiling
in one of the corners of the room; this was able to create a CCTV effect in order to
imply further that the current scene was an interrogation. Our mise-en-scene was also
effective as it was also linked to the type of business that the characters were all involved
in; for example, the scene where Rakim had to deliver the bag with unknown contents, to
Saeed by the alley way next to the train station. Using this location for this sort of scene
can successfully further imply that their business has to be conducted discreetly, which
must mean that the business that they are in is illegal.
Our media product developed conventions of real media by the type of editing that we
used. Within the whole piece, we used cut transitions in order to speed up the flashback
(which is what the first segment was before the interrogation scene). The use of speeding
up the events that happened up until the interrogation can show our audience how the
main character has got him into the predicament he is in. Furthermore, cut transitions
allow more information to be shown to the audience in less time, which can prevent the
opening from being slow and boring. In some of our transitions, we used a RGB
distortion effect when switching from one scene to another one. This distortion can
suggest to the viewer that the events being shown are all blurs of memory trying to be
fitted together by the main character.
