Question 1
 Bright and colourful with a bold, full layout to catch peoples eyes.
 Show the house style of the magazine.
 Has a distinct masthead as the title block which is bold and eye-catching.
 Have a slogan next to the masthead.
 Use the same font throughout.
 Show the main story.
 Have an image of the model, who will be involved in the main story which is also
displayed in font.
 Barcode, date and price.
• My masthead is big and bold. It is right at the top of the page so that it will stand
out and be easily seen on the shelf in a shop. I have placed my image of my
model in front of the masthead to make this image stand out. This also follows the
conventions of higher priced magazines by making it look more professional, so I
used this to give it a bit more sophistication.
• Added a slogan at the top above the masthead to catch the eye.
• I placed stories that will be featured in the magazine all around the model in the
image so that they can stand out and make it look full, interesting the audience
and advertising the content. All of the stories use band names and interests that
go with the indie genre.
• Used the same font over the whole page and other pages of the magazine so that
it would look more sophisticated.
• The main story is in large font and in the middle.
• The model is looking at the camera and therefore the reader, whilst wearing
clothes that represent the genre. She is the main story.
• There is a barcode with the date and price next to it at the bottom of the page.
• I used this front cover of mixmag for inspiration of
my front cover image and the layout of my cover
to ensure it followed the conventions.
• Generally, my front cover follows the conventions
rather than challenging them.
 Has the logo or title of the magazine on.
 Bold, prominent with main stories standing out more than others.
 Full
 Keeps with house style
 Same font
 More than one image
 References page numbers of all the pages in the magazine.
 Layout – margins, usually 3 or more columns.
 Structured.
 Divided into sections.
• I used three columns for my margin on the InDesign layout. I used this as a
general template for my contents layout. However, I challenged this a little
because I made the photos fit together without space in between, crossing the
boundaries of the margins. I also made the ‘features’ a bit wider than the
‘exclusive’ and the image for page 22.
• Put the date, title and ‘contents’ at the top which follows conventions. Put page
number and issue date at the bottom. Also added the website at the bottom so the
audience could use the magazine in a variety of ways, also giving the company
more promotion.
• Keeps with the white, black and red house style. Originally had a black
background with white text, but changed this so the background would be the
same colour as the rest of the pages.
• Same font and made sure it was a full page with lots to look at, however not too
full so it still looks sophisticated.
• I referenced the page numbers on each of the contents titles or pictures.
• This all mostly complies to the typical contents page conventions.
• I used this page from mixmag to inspire my
contents page. I changed it quite a lot by adding
more pictures and editing the general layout, but
used it for ideas of the numbers on my images
and the top and bottom of the page.
 A large image
 Full
 Lots of text, usually an interview
 Colourful
 A big quote
 Same font and house style as rest of magazine
 Equal margins with about 2 or 3 columns
 Standing out headline
• Therefore, I made the underlines of the title bold so it would stand
out and not look too empty, also the reasoning for adding in the
‘new and upcoming’.
• I made the interview long but not fill the whole page, with small
writing.
• I played around with the margins, making the ones with text bigger
than the ones without to make it look more weighted.
• For my double page, although I kept some
conventions I also challenged a lot of them.
• I made sure to have the same font as the rest
of the magazine, again with a white
background and black font with margins, a bold
outstanding title and keeping the website, issue
date and page number.
• However, I made it all black and white and left
quite a few gaps, challenging some
conventions. I did this to make it more
sophisticated and keep with the indie genre
and idea that the audience prefer the
information than pictures.
• I took inspiration from the image below.
