Evaluation Q3
What kind of media institution might distribute
your media product and why?
Introduction
The filming industry relies on distribution companies. The big
conglomerate companies in the industry invest in smaller companies,
which allows them to vertically integrate into different areas of the media
industry. Distributors are there to advertise any new films in theatres, and
in todays world, its a lot faster and cheaper as its now all done digitally,
whereas it was done with analogue technology.
Bigger production companies sometimes help smaller film companies,
such as independent film companies like Film 4, because it gives them a
bigger budget and allows them to distribute their film on a larger scale.
Our film's genre is a drama, which has been influence by ‘Rush’ (2013),
which shows the life of a famous racer and his accomplishments and
failures
Our film would have a high budget, so we’d be looked for a Big
distribution company such as Universal Pictures or 20th Century Fox.
This would be because we want there to be a lot of special effects (CGI of
cars crashing etc), expensive cars and high profile actors, to entice
people to watch.
Potential Distributing
Institutions
Universal Pictures
One of ‘The Big 6’
Subsidiary of NBCUniversal
Founded in 1912
Located in California, US
They create and distribute theatrical and non-
theatrical filmed entertainment. Universal's
theatrical slate includes films developed internally,
along with co-productions, acquisitions, and films
developed by outside partners and distributed by
the studio.
Biggest Releases: Jurassic World (2015), Fast &
Furious 7 (2015) and Minions (2015)
Jurassic World Budget: $150 Million
Fast & Furious 7 Budget: $190 Million
Minions Budget: $74 Million
The budget our film would be hoping for would also
be around the $100 Million mark, as we would
need lots of expensive props and special effects,
just like Fast & Furious 7 did. They also specialise
in drama and action, and specifically FAF7, which
is a car film, relates a lot to our genre, so this would
be an advantage in deciding which distributor to
use.
Walt Disney Pictures
One of the ‘Big 6’
Division of Walt Disney Studios
Founded in 1923
Located in California
Biggest Releases: Frozen (2013), Pirates of the
Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and Toy Story
3 (2010)
Frozen Budget: $150 Million
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest Budget:
$225 Million
Toy Story 3 Budget: $200 Million
They specialise in Kids/Family movies, which isn’t
the genre of our film, so if they distributed this, their
target audience wouldn’t want to see our film so it
wouldn’t get as many sales.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Division of Time Warner Entertainment
Founded in 1923
Located in California
They release Tv shows and music, as they have
a number of different subsidiaries.
Biggest Releases: The Dark Knight (2008), The
Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011)
The Dark Knight Budget: $180 Million
The Dark Knight Rises Budget: $250 Million
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Budget: $250 Million
They specialise in sci-fi films, and therefore
doesn’t follow our genre so their target audience
may not want to watch the film.
20th Century Fox
One of the ‘Big 6’
Subsidiary of 21st Century Fox
Founded in 1935
Located in Los Angeles
They’re known for distributing the 1st and 2nd
highest grossing films ever (‘Avatar’ and
‘Titanic’). They also release TV shows such as
‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Glee’
Biggest Releases: Avatar (2009), Titanic (1997)
and Star Wars: Episode I (1999)
Avatar Budget: $237 Million
Titanic Budget: $200 Million
Star Wars: Episode I Budget: $115 Million
I would definitely choose this company to
distribute our film as they have the 1st and 2nd
highest grossing films ever, and they also give
you a very good budget.
