Evaluation Of Student Magazine
In what ways does this media product use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
Masthead is big
and bold to
capture
Main image,
both looking
at the
camera,
direct
address
Cover lines
surrounding
the main
image
• Overall my magazine has used the same codes and conventions as the GQ magazine that is
shown above. However there are some small differences.
• Things in common
• My front cover features a main image that is related to the article (a student) and GQ
features an image that relates to the article. Also the images contain direct address the
people in the images have a strong posture and are facing the camera, another thing is that
both of the main images partially cover the mast head
• Both the masthead’s are big and bold which the reader and will make them pick up the
magazine in the shop another thing is that both the mastheads are partially covered by the
main image
• Model looking into camera
• Model being centred
• Cover lines to the sides
• Both the front covers feature a colour scheme
Differences
-on my front cover I have a natural background(library books) and in the GQ
cover it is just a plain white background
- The GQ cover doesn’t feature a barcode and my front cover does
- My front cover features a black and white cover scheme while the other
front cover features a black and read colour scheme
- Some of my cover lines feature shapes to attract the reader to the text and
get them to read it.
So overall my front cover has followed the standard codes and conventions
that a front cover should follow
My contents page follows the standard codes
and conventions that magazines should follow. I
am going to compare my contents page to the
GQ contents page to show that it does follow
the codes and conventions. A similarity is that
my contents features page numbering this tells
the reader where they can find a specific thing
on a specific page. Another similarity is that my
contents features images. Another similarity is
that both the contents pages feature a colour
scheme, my colour scheme is the college
colours which features mainly purple colours,
the colour scheme is that colour because it is
college colours and the students would be very
familiar with it.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
a lot of programmes have been used when developing and creating the student
magazine. One of the main programmes that have been used is adobe photoshop
which has allowed me to manipulate and enhance images to give the magazine a
professional look. A camera was also used to collect images, the camera was good
quality and took nice images which were then imported into Photoshop and used for
the magazine. To import the photos onto photoshop I had to use a memory stick and
transfer the photos from the camera and to the computer. Another program I used is
powerpoint and that was to create this evaluation.
Who are the audience and how did you address them?
• The audience of the student magazine are students of the sixth form who will
want to be informed of extra curricular activities and about their subjects
• Codes and conventions used on the front page to address and attract the reader
was the use of direct address, for example the model is looking directly and the
camera (audience) so the audience feel like the model is looking right at them.
• Also the props placed in the background and in the models hand are school
related. And the model on the cover is an average person so the audience are
more inclined to read it because they see an average person/student that looks
like them.
