Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. Evaluation
What did you learnfrom the pitch?
From the pitch I learnt how to develop my presenting skills as I had to convince the clients
to use our studio to record their campaigns. However, I felt that my skills in a convincing
argument could be improved as it was vital for us to sell our company as best as we could
and I believe that my nerves showed as I stuttered throughout my parts within the
presentation.
What feedback were you given?
We were praised on our ability to present while keeping eye contact (due to the lack of
‘paper’ we used) this was felt to help engage the clients which is a key aspect in convincing
them to choose our company. Furthermore, it was agreed that our idea to include vox pops
was good as it would engage with our target audience as it would make the advertisement
include a variety of ages and gender. Moreover our script was believed to be very
convincing however the main issue with our presentation was the fact we did not read it out
as it was suggested that it would bring the presentation more to life and entice the clients
more to choose our company. Additionally, the choice of using Mr Walbrin was questioned
because of whether his voice would be suitable for our target audience. As well as this, the
music for sixth form was maybe too dramatic which could take the attention away from the
campaign.
What needs tochange before youcan go ahead and recordyour ads?
If we were to change anything we would make the music less dramatic (especially for the
Ringwood school campaign). This is because we would want to keep the audience’s
attention on the words in the campaign as it would be more likely they would be convinced
to come to the open day if they hear all the content in what the clients’ described as ‘the
best script so far’. However, regarding the music we are using for our sixth form campaign
we would probably keep it how it is because we want to attract our target audience with
the inspirational undertone contained in the music.
