Evaluation 4: How did you use media
technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation
stages?
PLANNING & RESEARCH
 Before we could do anything, we needed to conduct a
series of paper work before we could go ahead and
film. The main reason behind the planning and
research was to make sure we had all the research
we needed that showed that we had a proper plan for
our film, and to show that we thought our idea
through. An example of some of the things we had to
do was genre research, location scouting, and finding
the right actors to fulfil the roles we had.
 In order to conduct our research, we had to use
certain programmes and softwares for the making of
our final film and ancillary tasks, and the paperwork
we produced.
ONLINE WEBSITES
THE INTERNET
 The internet was where all of our research came from for the
planning and research part of our course. Additionally, the
internet gave us access to other websites which we used to
present our paperwork in a creative and fun way. We also used
the internet to get access to social media websites which we
used to help us promote our film.
SOCIAL MEDIA
 We used YouTube, Twitter, and
Facebook as our main social
media sites after researching the
best way to market our work to
our target audience. Since we
are part of a technology-driven
generation, it makes sense to
target our audience in a way
which is easy for them to access
our work. These social media
sites helped us to promote our
film to numerous amounts of
people in just one go, which
benefited us.
YOUTUBE
 We used YouTube for more than one
reason. Even though we used it to help us
promote our short film in an easy costless
way, we also used YouTube whenever we
needed help making something on one of
our ancillary tasks, or when we needed a
tutorial for how to create a certain effect
on our final production. YouTube acted as
a guide where we received most of our
knowledge and information from when
creating our final idea. We also used
YouTube to help us gather sound for our
production and we also used it to
research cinematography techniques
which we incorporated into our film.
WIX
 We created a website which was
the foundation for our paperwork
and the first step we took during
this course. We chose to make a
website because it was more
creative to make compared to
the blogs we made for our AS
coursework. On top of this, it
gave our paperwork a more
professional look because the
website was really organised.
Having a website allowed our
group to have a sense of
independence and creativity
because we were completely in
charge of the layout and look of
it.
SCRIBD
 Scribd was a website we
used to convert some of
our paperwork so that we
could embed it onto a
website and make it look
presentable. We tried to
use it for documents which
had little to no pictures
because we realised that
the website would
frequently change the
layout we originally had if a
piece of work has pictures.
SLIDESHARE
 Slideshare allowed us to upload paperwork in
the form of a slideshow. It was a better
alternative to Scribd because it kept our layout
the same and still allowed us to embed work
onto our website without any hassle.
CANVA
 We used a presentation site called Canva which
helped us create some of our pieces of work in the
form of a banner. We mainly used it for research of
finding statistics, but we enjoyed using it as it made
the paperwork look more vibrant and eye-catching.
BUBBL.US
 This website is frequently used to gather ideas
together in the form of a ‘brainstorm’ or ‘mind
map’. We used this website when we started the
planning stage and we were brainstorming the
possible names for our production. It was a great
website to use to help gather our ideas together
and present it in an organised way.
ANIMOTO
 Animoto is a website used to help turn photos
and short videos into a video slideshow that
looks professional. I used this website because
it was a creative way to show my piece of work,
and it was also fun yet challenging to use.
SURVEY MONKEY
 When conducting our pre-
questionnaire and post
questionnaire, we couldn’t think of a
better website to use than Survey
Monkey. Conducting a survey was
vital to be able to hear the opinions
of our target audience and to gain
feedback from them on our
production. Survey Monkey allowed
us to create an efficient survey to
gather and analyse data from.
 The only issues we faced was
embedding the website onto the blog
because sometimes it wouldn’t
appear, and the other issue was the
fact that the number of questions you
could write were limited, you could
only do ten questions so we had to
make two parts for our questionnaire.
PREZI
 Prezi is a presentation software
made online which allows
people to create unique
presentations. One of the
positive things about Prezi was
the fact that it was easy to use,
we never faced any problems
when using it, and it is one of
the easiest websites to navigate.
 The only issue we faced with
Prezi was the fact that the site
was sometimes unreachable
when it was down, which meant
we couldn’t access our work if
we needed it at that moment.
EMAZE
 Emaze is an online web-based
presentation used to create
attractive presentations that are
more visually appealing than
normal presentations. This
website was used as one of the
presentations for our planning
and research to make our
paperwork look more appealing
and fun to navigate.
COMPUTER PROGRAMMES
MICROSOFT WORD
 Microsoft word was frequently used
when we were constructing the first
drafts of our work such as our
evaluation. This was one of the best
programmes we used as it allowed us
to do many things such as
spellchecking our work, which meant
that our work flowed. As we were both
familiar with this programme, it made
it easier for us to use. It was good for
us to use especially because we could
easily transfer the work to our
website.
MICROSOFT POWERPOINT
 Microsoft Powerpoint was a great way to make a creative
presentation, I usually used it for lengthy work because it made
the work seem more interesting than boring. However, I used
Powerpoint when waiting out the shooting plans and reviews,
and the meeting notes because it was a good way to organise
our work and It was easy to go back to when looking for what
we planned to do the next lesson.
MICROSOFT EXCEL
 I only used Excel briefly, but when I did use it, I
used it to help organise the data I received
from the questionnaires to create
questionnaire graphs. This was the best way to
turn our feedback into a visual form so we
could analyse our data.
FINAL CUT PRO
 Final Cut Pro was the editing software we
used to construct out short film. Caitlan
Bispham, who was the editor on this project,
has already had experience with editing
during our AS two-minute opening sequence,
therefore, it was easy for her to get into grips
with the programme even though we used
more features than we did last year.
 Not only did she edit, but since she was also
the sound person, she as also responsible for
putting together the voice over, the sound
effects, and the score music to make the
narrative flow and make sense. Her job
involved her making sure all the clips were in
a chronological order, in order for her to do
this effectively she sorted out each group of
clips into groups for each scene.
PHOTOSHOP
 Photoshop was used to help create
my ancillary tasks, which were a film
review and a film poster to
accompany my short film. This was
my first time using the programme so
I found it quite difficult to operate
especially because of the initial idea
I wanted, especially for my film
poster. However, this was one of the
best programmes I could use as it
allowed me to change and
manipulate the pictures I took until
they matched the idea I wanted.
 The best method I used to get
familiar with this programme was
YouTube tutorials, most of the ideas I
wanted to complete already had step
by step tutorials so I followed them
and was able to end up with my final
FINAL PRODUCTS
EQUIPMENT
CONSTRUCTION
MOBILE PHONES
 We used our phones to communicate with
each other from the start of the project till the
very end. We constantly messaged each
other to confirm filming times, locations, and
what equipment we would need to book out
for our next filming date.
 Additionally, we used our phones to take the
recce pictures to help show us working
together as a group and the progress we
made.
ZOOM MIC
 Our narrative was portrayed mostly
through voiceovers and the best piece
of equipment to use to record our
actress speaking. This was my first
time using the zoom mic, but I found it
fairly easy to use. The only problem I
faced when recording the voiceover
was the fact that it picked it the
smallest of sound which meant that it
took a really long time to gather the
sound because it had to be dead
silent in a room.
SD CARD
 The SD card helped to store whatever footage of
sound recordings we gathered. We were able to
transfer the SD card to the Mac computers to export
the footage and sound so that it could be edited.
TRIPOD
 We used a tripod to make the
camera steady so we could get
stable shots, we also used it
whenever we used a pan shot
because we were able to get
steady shots. The tripod was
easy to use and transport
because it came in a bad, which
was useful for the times we
needed to film in locations where
we needed to take a bus.
MAC/ LAPTOP
 A Mac was one of the main equipment's we used from the
beginning utill the very end of the project. We first used a
Mac computer to help establish our website, which we
created for our planning and research. Then we used a
Mac to conduct our research online during pre-production.
During post-production, a Mac computer was used to edit
the footage and create our ancillaries because it had
Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. There were times when we
needed to use the programmes on a Mac during out of
school hours so an alternative was a laptop, this was
beneficial for us because we were able to take the laptop
home to help us meet deadlines. On top of that, it had the
same programmes as a mac and it was the same layout
too, so it was easy to use.
CANON 70D
 The camera we used to film our short film was
a Canon 70D, and since I was the
cinematographer as well as the director, I
spent most of my time getting familiar with the
camera and the different features it had so I
could create the best effects for our
production. While filming the only issue I
came across was trying to focus the camera
on a moving object. When we filmed the
scene where Claire dropped the pen it was
hard to get the pen in focus, but in the end,
we managed to capture the vital scene. I
found the camera really easy to use and very
comfortable to hold and carry around.
 On top of this, I also used this camera to help
me take pictures for my ancillary task
USB/ EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
 My USB was one of the most vital
pieces of equipment I owned because
I used it to keep all of my paperwork
and my ancillary tasks on it. One of
the best things about having a USB is
the fact that you can easily organise
your work into folders so it makes it
easier to locate your work. My USB
also enabled me to keep digital files
and videos too, along with the
external hard drive, which meant that
everyone in my group had a copy of
the necessary files we needed just in
case another person lost theirs.
CONCLUSION
 After conducting some research, it was clear
that technology played a big role in the
planning for our film, making our film, and
marketing the film. If we didn’t have help from
various websites and computer programmes,
our final product wouldn’t be what it is today
and our results would be different.

Evaluation 4

  • 1. BY PRECIOUS OLADIMEJI Evaluation 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
  • 2. PLANNING & RESEARCH  Before we could do anything, we needed to conduct a series of paper work before we could go ahead and film. The main reason behind the planning and research was to make sure we had all the research we needed that showed that we had a proper plan for our film, and to show that we thought our idea through. An example of some of the things we had to do was genre research, location scouting, and finding the right actors to fulfil the roles we had.  In order to conduct our research, we had to use certain programmes and softwares for the making of our final film and ancillary tasks, and the paperwork we produced.
  • 4. THE INTERNET  The internet was where all of our research came from for the planning and research part of our course. Additionally, the internet gave us access to other websites which we used to present our paperwork in a creative and fun way. We also used the internet to get access to social media websites which we used to help us promote our film.
  • 5. SOCIAL MEDIA  We used YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook as our main social media sites after researching the best way to market our work to our target audience. Since we are part of a technology-driven generation, it makes sense to target our audience in a way which is easy for them to access our work. These social media sites helped us to promote our film to numerous amounts of people in just one go, which benefited us.
  • 6. YOUTUBE  We used YouTube for more than one reason. Even though we used it to help us promote our short film in an easy costless way, we also used YouTube whenever we needed help making something on one of our ancillary tasks, or when we needed a tutorial for how to create a certain effect on our final production. YouTube acted as a guide where we received most of our knowledge and information from when creating our final idea. We also used YouTube to help us gather sound for our production and we also used it to research cinematography techniques which we incorporated into our film.
  • 7. WIX  We created a website which was the foundation for our paperwork and the first step we took during this course. We chose to make a website because it was more creative to make compared to the blogs we made for our AS coursework. On top of this, it gave our paperwork a more professional look because the website was really organised. Having a website allowed our group to have a sense of independence and creativity because we were completely in charge of the layout and look of it.
  • 8. SCRIBD  Scribd was a website we used to convert some of our paperwork so that we could embed it onto a website and make it look presentable. We tried to use it for documents which had little to no pictures because we realised that the website would frequently change the layout we originally had if a piece of work has pictures.
  • 9. SLIDESHARE  Slideshare allowed us to upload paperwork in the form of a slideshow. It was a better alternative to Scribd because it kept our layout the same and still allowed us to embed work onto our website without any hassle.
  • 10. CANVA  We used a presentation site called Canva which helped us create some of our pieces of work in the form of a banner. We mainly used it for research of finding statistics, but we enjoyed using it as it made the paperwork look more vibrant and eye-catching.
  • 11. BUBBL.US  This website is frequently used to gather ideas together in the form of a ‘brainstorm’ or ‘mind map’. We used this website when we started the planning stage and we were brainstorming the possible names for our production. It was a great website to use to help gather our ideas together and present it in an organised way.
  • 12. ANIMOTO  Animoto is a website used to help turn photos and short videos into a video slideshow that looks professional. I used this website because it was a creative way to show my piece of work, and it was also fun yet challenging to use.
  • 13. SURVEY MONKEY  When conducting our pre- questionnaire and post questionnaire, we couldn’t think of a better website to use than Survey Monkey. Conducting a survey was vital to be able to hear the opinions of our target audience and to gain feedback from them on our production. Survey Monkey allowed us to create an efficient survey to gather and analyse data from.  The only issues we faced was embedding the website onto the blog because sometimes it wouldn’t appear, and the other issue was the fact that the number of questions you could write were limited, you could only do ten questions so we had to make two parts for our questionnaire.
  • 14. PREZI  Prezi is a presentation software made online which allows people to create unique presentations. One of the positive things about Prezi was the fact that it was easy to use, we never faced any problems when using it, and it is one of the easiest websites to navigate.  The only issue we faced with Prezi was the fact that the site was sometimes unreachable when it was down, which meant we couldn’t access our work if we needed it at that moment.
  • 15. EMAZE  Emaze is an online web-based presentation used to create attractive presentations that are more visually appealing than normal presentations. This website was used as one of the presentations for our planning and research to make our paperwork look more appealing and fun to navigate.
  • 17. MICROSOFT WORD  Microsoft word was frequently used when we were constructing the first drafts of our work such as our evaluation. This was one of the best programmes we used as it allowed us to do many things such as spellchecking our work, which meant that our work flowed. As we were both familiar with this programme, it made it easier for us to use. It was good for us to use especially because we could easily transfer the work to our website.
  • 18. MICROSOFT POWERPOINT  Microsoft Powerpoint was a great way to make a creative presentation, I usually used it for lengthy work because it made the work seem more interesting than boring. However, I used Powerpoint when waiting out the shooting plans and reviews, and the meeting notes because it was a good way to organise our work and It was easy to go back to when looking for what we planned to do the next lesson.
  • 19. MICROSOFT EXCEL  I only used Excel briefly, but when I did use it, I used it to help organise the data I received from the questionnaires to create questionnaire graphs. This was the best way to turn our feedback into a visual form so we could analyse our data.
  • 20. FINAL CUT PRO  Final Cut Pro was the editing software we used to construct out short film. Caitlan Bispham, who was the editor on this project, has already had experience with editing during our AS two-minute opening sequence, therefore, it was easy for her to get into grips with the programme even though we used more features than we did last year.  Not only did she edit, but since she was also the sound person, she as also responsible for putting together the voice over, the sound effects, and the score music to make the narrative flow and make sense. Her job involved her making sure all the clips were in a chronological order, in order for her to do this effectively she sorted out each group of clips into groups for each scene.
  • 21. PHOTOSHOP  Photoshop was used to help create my ancillary tasks, which were a film review and a film poster to accompany my short film. This was my first time using the programme so I found it quite difficult to operate especially because of the initial idea I wanted, especially for my film poster. However, this was one of the best programmes I could use as it allowed me to change and manipulate the pictures I took until they matched the idea I wanted.  The best method I used to get familiar with this programme was YouTube tutorials, most of the ideas I wanted to complete already had step by step tutorials so I followed them and was able to end up with my final
  • 24. MOBILE PHONES  We used our phones to communicate with each other from the start of the project till the very end. We constantly messaged each other to confirm filming times, locations, and what equipment we would need to book out for our next filming date.  Additionally, we used our phones to take the recce pictures to help show us working together as a group and the progress we made.
  • 25. ZOOM MIC  Our narrative was portrayed mostly through voiceovers and the best piece of equipment to use to record our actress speaking. This was my first time using the zoom mic, but I found it fairly easy to use. The only problem I faced when recording the voiceover was the fact that it picked it the smallest of sound which meant that it took a really long time to gather the sound because it had to be dead silent in a room.
  • 26. SD CARD  The SD card helped to store whatever footage of sound recordings we gathered. We were able to transfer the SD card to the Mac computers to export the footage and sound so that it could be edited.
  • 27. TRIPOD  We used a tripod to make the camera steady so we could get stable shots, we also used it whenever we used a pan shot because we were able to get steady shots. The tripod was easy to use and transport because it came in a bad, which was useful for the times we needed to film in locations where we needed to take a bus.
  • 28. MAC/ LAPTOP  A Mac was one of the main equipment's we used from the beginning utill the very end of the project. We first used a Mac computer to help establish our website, which we created for our planning and research. Then we used a Mac to conduct our research online during pre-production. During post-production, a Mac computer was used to edit the footage and create our ancillaries because it had Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. There were times when we needed to use the programmes on a Mac during out of school hours so an alternative was a laptop, this was beneficial for us because we were able to take the laptop home to help us meet deadlines. On top of that, it had the same programmes as a mac and it was the same layout too, so it was easy to use.
  • 29. CANON 70D  The camera we used to film our short film was a Canon 70D, and since I was the cinematographer as well as the director, I spent most of my time getting familiar with the camera and the different features it had so I could create the best effects for our production. While filming the only issue I came across was trying to focus the camera on a moving object. When we filmed the scene where Claire dropped the pen it was hard to get the pen in focus, but in the end, we managed to capture the vital scene. I found the camera really easy to use and very comfortable to hold and carry around.  On top of this, I also used this camera to help me take pictures for my ancillary task
  • 30. USB/ EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE  My USB was one of the most vital pieces of equipment I owned because I used it to keep all of my paperwork and my ancillary tasks on it. One of the best things about having a USB is the fact that you can easily organise your work into folders so it makes it easier to locate your work. My USB also enabled me to keep digital files and videos too, along with the external hard drive, which meant that everyone in my group had a copy of the necessary files we needed just in case another person lost theirs.
  • 31. CONCLUSION  After conducting some research, it was clear that technology played a big role in the planning for our film, making our film, and marketing the film. If we didn’t have help from various websites and computer programmes, our final product wouldn’t be what it is today and our results would be different.
