In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The document outlines 9 ways that people can recognize when they are experiencing motivation waves to walk for 30 minutes. The waves include: 1) Already having walking as a habit, 2) being requested by an authority figure or friend, 3) needing to walk for survival reasons, 4) walking being a social norm in a given context, 5) experiencing rare weather or environments, 6) having a period of prolonged inactivity, 7) experiencing extreme emotions, 8) having a self-reflection or realization, and 9) experiencing imaginary judgement by comparing oneself to others. The document provides examples for each motivation wave.
Our media piece uses some conventions of thriller films like having a dark antagonist but also challenges conventions by having a female protagonist. It represents both male and female genders but not a wide range of social groups. The piece could be distributed by independent film festivals or distributors due to its low budget. The target audience would be both men and women between classes B to E who seek escapism. We promoted it through social media and targeting film festivals. Through making this piece, I learned new filming and editing techniques like color correction and using a camera stabilizer. My skills in directing, planning, and organizing production improved from the preliminary task.
This document discusses the concept of psychogeography and situationist practices related to exploring and mapping one's surroundings. It covers theories put forth by Guy Debord and the Situationists on deriving meaning from one's environment and how architecture can influence behavior. Specific situationist techniques are mentioned like the dérive, which involves drifting through an area and mapping psychogeographical features. Examples are given of alternative mapping projects that apply these ideas like mapping unusual or subjective attributes of places. The document advocates exploring one's surroundings through playful derivation to gain new perspectives and insights.
Derive/Drifting is a technique developed by Guy Debord in 1958 where one rapidly passes through varied surroundings without preconceptions, exploring the built environment. Situationists found architecture restrictive and forcing interaction within systems. Cities have psychogeographical contours with currents, fixed points and vortexes that discourage entry or exit from certain zones. Psychogeography is the study of how environments affect emotions and behaviors. Examples include freely exploring one's neighborhood or following a hand-drawn map to gain a different perspective of the city.
The document discusses how the Catalan Tourist Board has used blogging and Instagram to promote tourism in Catalonia. It provides statistics on how Instagram grew to become a major social media platform. In 2012, the Board ran its first Instagram campaign called #catalunyaexperience, which encouraged users to upload photos from Catalonia in 8 categories. The campaign was very successful, receiving over 48,000 photos with the hashtag that were then exhibited in Barcelona.
The document discusses Blogville Emilia Romagna, a project that partnered with 50 bloggers to live blog from the Emilia Romagna region of Italy for 83 days. The bloggers stayed in 2 apartments in Bologna and Rimini and participated in 20 organized trips. They produced over 250 blog posts and social media content that reached over 8 million people. The project aimed to showcase the region through the bloggers' experiences rather than intensive scheduled press trips. It generated significant media coverage and established the bloggers as brand ambassadors for the region.

The children went on a trip to see horses. They passed under a fence and found the area where the horses were kept. They quietly approached so as not to scare the horses. They found the person caring for the horses, Boris, who let them enter. Since they brought carrots for the horses, Boris helped them safely feed the horses. The children then said goodbye to the horses, who had eaten all the carrots. On the way back to school, they stopped to play before continuing home with new adventures to share.

AS Media Studies. Movie Evaluation- Foundation portfolioManiha Panjwani
1) The document discusses the film opening created by the author for their creative portfolio. They aimed to develop and challenge conventions of the horror thriller genre while also using established conventions.
2) To do so, the author researched openings of other thrillers to understand typical elements like camerawork, editing, sound, and mise-en-scene. They shot in low-key lighting rather than complete darkness and added a night storm sound effect to create suspense.
3) The author also discusses distributing the film through Universal Studios due to their openness to different genres and ability to attract large audiences through major horror film franchises. They believe Universal would be the perfect company to distribute the low-budget film.
The document discusses conventions of real media soap operas and how they were used, developed or challenged in the media product. It provides examples of trailers for shows like 90210 and Skins to compare conventions. Specifically, it analyzes shots, lighting, locations and how characters are framed. This helps show how the media product fits with or diverges from typical soap opera conventions.
The document discusses various conventions of real soap operas including their serialised narratives focusing on domestic themes and personal relationships. It also notes conventions like basic lighting and costumes to create realism, memorable theme tunes, and short scenes with parallel narratives to maintain viewer interest. The document provides examples of these conventions from real soaps like Coronation Street and EastEnders.
The document discusses conventions of real media soap operas and how the media product challenges or develops these conventions in three key ways:
1. It uses female characters, close-ups showing emotions, natural lighting and location settings similar to soap operas.
2. It challenges conventions by using darker lighting, grittier visuals and outdoor locations to convey more intense emotions like anger and fear rather than happiness.
3. Comparisons are made to trailers for 90210 and Skins which also use conventions like close-ups, conflicts and long shots but develop them through techniques like blurred edges and unidentifiable characters to create a sense of confusion different from typical soap operas.
The document is a media evaluation of a short sequence for an opening to a social realism film. It summarizes the key points made in the evaluation:
1) The media product follows conventions of social realism such as handheld camera and location shooting but challenges conventions through close-ups rather than wide shots.
2) The media product represents audiences aged 25+ through its serious tone and storyline about a graduate journalist's struggles.
3) A company like Columbia Pictures would be a good fit to distribute the film as it has experience with social realism and political movies.
Studio Canal would be the preferred distributor since they have experience with romantic and comedy films like the document describes. However, the film would need a high enough budget. Alternatively, the film could be shown at local film festivals or through the Raindance film festival if Studio Canal funding was not obtained. A viral marketing campaign similar to Paranormal Activity could help generate buzz but the Coraline campaign using handcrafted props would not work for this film.

The document provides an evaluation of Bronte Parsons' animation project. Some key points:
- The contextual research on animation techniques was very useful, particularly Chuck Jones' focus on simple concepts and Ian Hubert's use of lighting.
- The montage opening sequence achieved the goal of telling a story through disparate images with a unified theme reinforced by narration.
- The desert landscape effectively contrasts with the crowded montage, representing nothingness and the unknowable after civilization.
- The rolling text introduction may be too long and explanatory; it could be shortened to more quickly set up the fight scene.
The document discusses the evaluation of a film production process. It covers various aspects of planning, filming, editing and the final product. For planning, the document discusses researching demographics and coming up with varied ideas, though some ideas felt underdeveloped. Filming had time restraints which required getting backup shots. Editing was simplistic without unusual transitions to fit the tone, and music was added. Overall the film looks good with some pleasing shots, though some lacked movement or creativity. The sci-fi concept and tone may appeal to target audiences, but the slow start could put some off.

The document provides an evaluation of the contextual research, problem solving experiments, pre-production, and character design process for an animation project. Some key points:
- The contextual research on animation masters like Chuck Jones, Ian Herbert, and Miyazaki helped inform the style and techniques used in the project. Research on movement principles from a book also proved useful.
- While early problem solving experiments were somewhat disconnected from the final project, setting mini-deadlines and having backup plans may have helped manage time and scope better.
- Pre-production planning such as storyboarding helped speed up the process, but the project took longer than expected, requiring cuts to the original plot. Getting feedback on narration was also beneficial

4) The rolling text introduction may be too long and complex - it could be shortened to more directly set up the fight scene.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Who would be the audience for your media product?
How did you attract/address your audience?
The document outlines Tom Symmons' interest in producing an original science fiction film called "The Truth" about ancient Sumerian gods returning to Earth to address the damage humans have caused. It would be rated 12 and based on theories that Sumerians were created by aliens to be workers. The film's opening sequence would feature an everyday 18-year-old man and his dog discovering a landed unidentified object. Locations would include a quarry near the producer's house and the film faces challenges of training the dog and creating visual effects.
Robert Zemeckis is an American film director known for films like Back to the Future and Forrest Gump. He grew up without exposure to the arts and found inspiration mainly through television. Zemeckis' films often portray themes of isolation and loneliness, drawing from his own experiences of feeling disconnected from the world around him as a child. Through long takes and minimal dialogue, Zemeckis depicts the isolation of characters stranded alone like Chuck in Cast Away. Scenes on the deserted island rely heavily on ambient sound and slow camerawork to convey profound loneliness and lack of human contact.
Robert Lee Zemeckis is an American film director known for films portraying isolation and loneliness. Some of his most famous films are Back to the Future, Cast Away, and Forrest Gump. Zemeckis did not grow up in an artistic household but found inspiration in television. He sees himself using film as a medium for personal expression, as described by auteur theory. In Cast Away, Chuck is completely isolated after being stranded on an island alone. Back to the Future shows Marty isolated in another time. Forrest Gump highlights Forrest's isolation despite being surrounded by people. Zemeckis explores these themes of isolation through techniques like long takes with no music on Cast Away to immerse the viewer in the
Robert Lee Zemeckis is an American film director born in 1951 who first gained attention for directing Back to the Future Part 1 in 1985. Auteur theory suggests that a director can use film as a medium for personal artistic expression, and that their style continues across films. Some of Zemeckis's most notable films that portray isolation and loneliness include Cast Away, Back to the Future 1, and Forrest Gump, in which he explores characters isolated in unfamiliar times or places.
1. In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. use
• One convention I was keen to use
was special effects. My resources
where limited but managed to get
some smoke and fire effects.
• If I where to do it again I would
have actually put in the spaceship
crashing but that was out of my
skill set
3. • One other thing I used
that is quite like other
science fiction films was
to start it off with a view
of the earth from space
to tell the audience that
its is about the earth in
the first few seconds .
4. develop
• Although I could not put in the spaceship crash. Without
showing this still works well developing on conventions of
having and elaborate spaceship crash to grasp the audiences
attention.
• By having no crash then not seeing the alien it works well as
it keeps the audience questioning what is going on.
5. Challenge
• The way my opening challenges conventions is that in most
it sets up the setting of the film and main characters. Instead
it finishes with a cliff hanger that will be explained later on in
the film.
6. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
• My product represents a
typical rural environment set
in a little village. This is so that
if something out of the
ordinary was to happen it may
well go unnoticed.
• It is also representing a typical
adult out walking his dog
which can relate to a lot of
people.
