Pre-proposal & Proposal Evaluation
• In the pre-proposal the actual document states ‘This initial document provides you with an opportunity to reflect on, review and
summarise your progress and achievements through the first 7 units of the qualification and what you plan to create in your final
project. Think about what you know now, and what it means to you, compared with what you knew and could do before you started the
course, and how this has influenced your choice of pathway and your FMP.’ This essentially was made to get the ball rolling with getting
ideas flowing before you begin your actual project. In the first box on the graph is asks “In no less that 20 words what is your FMP idea?”
I then go on to talks about game of thrones. This initial document was helpful as it let me start to think about different ideas, what I was
going to make and the pre proposal also informed my proposal. I liked how the actual document had been presented in a graph form as
it is easier and clearer to read and is presented well on my Wix.com page. If I were to do this document over again I would probably
ensure that I included some images perhaps inspiring my work. This would bring my Pre Proposal up to the next level.
• Proposal-
• In my initial brief I was given these bullet points to ensure my proposal was up to standard “Make sure that you have made it clear in
your concept section about potential research targets, how you’re going to develop the project and who is it for and how you will appeal
to that audience. Alongside this there’s the contextual research doc which is inspirations, etc” With this on board I went on to filling out
the document which had 5 main elements to it. This included ‘project title and date” Which I named ‘Game of thrones’ which I liked as it
became clear to my audience what this fanzine would be about, without confusion. However in reflection I think my title could have
been slightly more creative or rememberable.
• The second section was about target audience, this is the part of the project where I can go into full detail about different elements of
target audience such as Demographics can be defined as quantifiable characteristics of your ideal customer. It comprises of age gender
Income education family size Race/religion sometimes ethnicity, language marital status, profession. I of course did not include as of
these elements of target audience in my work as I was limited to a word count. Which could have potentially made my work not as detail
as it could have been.
• The next section of my proposal was project concept. This is essentially where I explain what my concept of work will be, for example,
what is the concept of your project? What are you going to make? What research will you conduct and what will you need for your
production? I then went on to answer these questions in detail on my proposal, in reflection I could have perhaps extended these
answers as time went on in my project as I developed my work.
• The next section of my work was ‘how will my project be evaluated and previewed I answered this by
• I intend to create a weekly dairy post to evaluate my progression throughout the production, I will discuss the trials and tribulations of
my FMP because this will show me where to improve on my work and to continue the techniques that went well. I could have also said
to include pictures and annotations as project went on.

Research Evaluation
• Colour Schemes & Graphics
• When researching colour schemes I wanted to find colours that matched my Game of thrones fanzine so
this could be to do with the houses of the show, or perhaps the colour schemes of the main characters. For
example in the second colour scheme I put together using Adobecolour.com I analysed this strip of colour
“The colour scheme reminds of me of a tapestry with rich colours chosen to portray a difference in
geographical location. I believe this is both purposeful and practical; they have chosen these colours
because it shows the affluence of this region and the regal allure the Storm born Queen has in the earlier
seasons, practically lighter colours are better in the heat therefore light blues and creams will ensure the
queen will not wilt in the weather, do not miss the elements of gold on the garment. I will consider to apply
this to my own fanzine because it shows a refreshing image to the eyes instead of the darker harsh greys
and black images, font and text shown on the covers of the book from the Game of Thrones. This way my
fanzine will be unique as it finds a gap in the market and as a result will sell better.” I felt that I analysed my
colour schemes to the best.
• Adobe Colour is a web-based application used to experiment with, create, and share colour themes that
you use in a project. Illustrator CC has a Colour Themes panel that enables you to view and use the colour
themes that you have created or marked as favourite in the Adobe Colour application.
• Using the Colour Themes panel
• Click Window > Colour Themes, to open the panel.
• All themes available in your Adobe Colour account when Illustrator was launched are displayed in
the Colour Themes panel.
• If you have added a theme in Colour Themes after you started Illustrator, click Refresh in the Colour Themes
panel to include the latest theme.

• I also did some contextual research on colour and how it could inform my work, this is what, I found a lot research on ‘Psychology of
Colour’ This overall helped me develop, my decision making on what colours I will finally use in my own production.
• What is colour psychology?
• Color psychology is the study of how color affects our emotions and behaviors. Depending on your upbringing, cultural background
and personal preference, certain colors can make you feel a certain way.
• How this relates to my FMP
• This study will help me grasp a greater understanding of how colour can effect my target audiences emotions and perhaps how my
products are selected by an audience, This study also shows me how real world companies have used this study to their advantage,
and how colour psychology gives me a clear knowledge on which actually suits best for different cultures. For example I can use light
pinks to appeal to perhaps young females to make them feel feminine and more compelled to buy/read my products, it is essential to
use the correct colour scheme to intrigue my audience more , rather than using dark/dull colours that will not entice my audience or
that will relate to my products.
• Fonts-
• When researching fonts I wanted to find a range of different fonts to analyze I was looking for a few key elements of picking my fonts. I
had to consider visual and tonal direction-Visual is very much the font and how it looks, while tonal is the arrangement of words to
form a message. Both of these elements need to harmonise and be sympathetic to each other. some of the characteristics to look out
for are weights, roundness, length and how the font flows from letter to letter. Torn between serif, sans-serif, script or even hand-
drawn styles. Each personality of a font will help evoke a feeling or message.
• Test type in ways that are relevant to the project. Until I know a typeface will work until I have seen it at the right size and tested
whether the spacing works. I would ensure that I use my copy to in different fonts to see which elements of fonts I liked and what
elements I didn’t. In reflection I wish I had used a wider range of fonts in my copy so I could have perhaps used a different font for each
page.

Research Evaluation
The font used predominantly across the board for Game Of Thrones is this one presented, It reminds me of an ancient style
of font used for old scrolls or biblical texts. In the letters “O” there three lines down it, this reminds of the sharp outlines of
a sword, this will be done to relate the title of the book to the themes used throughout. At the ends of each letter the font is
thickened almost like its been welded on mounted on to the cover this is intentional as it nodes the historical element well
thought and written by the author, the font appears to be written in stone.
This font is vastly different from the first, its more a bubble rounded text. It appears to more of a native style of writing,
you probably would not see this on a sign in the U.K. or in relation to my topic in the North, you’d perhaps see this across
the Narrow sea in Pentos or Naarth. This font could be used to eventuate the type of area a person is, it doesn’t read
historic or royal it adds element of fresh and modern.

Research Evaluation
• Contextual Research- Within my contextual research I looked as many theories that could inform my work as possible. The reason for this is so that I
could implement these theories into my work. I gathered around three theories in detail.
• The Graphic Designers Guide to the Psychology of Colour.
• What is colour psychology?
• Color psychology is the study of how color affects our emotions and behaviors. Depending on your upbringing, cultural background and personal
preference, certain colors can make you feel a certain way.
• I felt this was an important theory as I could develop my fanzine colour schemes in a professional manor, and make my fanzine as interesting as
possible for the readers eye. In reflection I am very happy with the colour used in my fanzine as they suit the codes and conventions of Game of
thrones as I used the colours of each house, for example House Lannister has the colours A golden lion rampant on a crimson. Using the colour yellow,
burgundy, blood reds and black. I tried to include these throughout my Lannister double page spread. And for house stark the colour I used were the
house colours too, Grey on white/grey white.
• The second theory I used was the ‘Typography Theory’ which essentially was
• Typefaces usually are broken down into the following categories: Seri, Sans-Serif
• A serif is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or a symbol. If the letters and symbols of a typeface have serifs, then we call it a serif
typeface. The word “sans” is French for “without” and a Sans-Serif typeface is, as you might have guessed already, a typeface without serifs.
• How this informed my FMP-
• The main things that impact how scan able your text is are focus points, header size and position, text size, line height, alignment and contrast. Good
use of these elements will make sure your reader will be made aware of the content of your copy before choosing to read it wholly or abandon it.

Research Evaluation
• Survey Monkey Primary Research-
• After completing colour schemes, fonts, I went onto do some primary research. Primary research is crucial to have fresh, unused data directly
linked to my game of thrones fanzine to determine how or what to do for my product. Some methods of primary research is, questionnaires,
forums, and focus groups. I decided to make a survey on surveymonkey.com this is a fast and easy yet effective way of developing data directly
to my target audience.
• I asked 10 open and closed questions with a range of ways to answer them, such as multiple choice, answer boxed etc. This was effective as I
could analyse these questions in different ways, and this would also keep my audience interested.
• Pro’s & con’s of a survey.
• Relatively easy to administer
• Can be developed in less time (compared to other data-collection methods)
• Cost-effective, but cost depends on survey mode
• Can be administered remotely via online, mobile devices, mail, email, kiosk, or telephone.
• A broad range of data can be collected (e.g., attitudes, opinions, beliefs, values, behaviour, factual).
• Standardized surveys are relatively free from several types of errors
• Respondents may not feel encouraged to provide accurate, honest answers
• Respondents may not feel comfortable providing answers that present themselves in a unfavourable manner.
• Respondents may not be fully aware of their reasons for any given answer because of lack of memory on the subject, or even boredom.
• Surveys with closed-ended questions may have a lower validity rate than other question types.
• Data errors due to question non-responses may exist. The number of respondents who choose to respond to a survey question may be different
from those who chose not to respond, thus creating bias.

I asked my audience whether they had watched an episode of Game Of Thrones as it is essential to know a
little about the storylines and series itself in orders to answer and understand my Fanzine. The results show
that only 40% had not watched the series and 60% had. This shows the majority of my audience had watched
it, and therefore will give me accurate results for the rest of my questionnaire, and informing my FMP and
Fanzine.

Research Evaluation Existing Products
• After I had completed my survey I wanted to go into analysing existing products. Product analysis can take different forms but
in general it means asking questions about a product and forming answers. It can mean experts analysing a product or
members of the general public or potential customers/groups of people. This is vital for the production process as you can
focus on a few key elements of a front cover or a double page, such a title, main image, barcodes, page number etc.
• Fanzines/fan print products – good examples, considerations on style and production techniques, content, etc
• I looked at key elements of an existing product such as:
• COST- How much will it cost to manufacture the product and how much will it sell for in the shops?
• AESTHETICS- Does the product look good? Is it stylish? Is the style to the customers liking?
• CLIENT REQUIREMENTS- Is the product what the customer wants? What changes are required to make the product suitable
for the client/customer? Does the customer like the product?
• COLOUR AND TEXTURE -Is the colour/texture of the product effective? Or is it what the customer wants?

Background-
This is quite a unique front cover in
comparison to the classic Game of Thrones
book covers, the reason I say this is
because it shows one of the geographical
settings in this fantasy world. The use of
image and colour suggests to me that it is
set in the north near Winterfell, we can
see the tree line and beyond that is mist to
which is hard to see beyond a kind of “no
mansland”. The Dire wolf and the paw
prints pressed in the snow coming towards
the viewer interests the reader as to
where this creature has been and what it
has seen. They could have chosen the Iron
throne as the cover but the North they
chose, they suggests the heart of this book
is set at Winterfell, who wouldn’t want to
buy this book with that background, I may
use this as inspiration for my Fanzine.
Font-
You can tell that this font is
personalised, it is unique in its form;
it reminds of a musical note on the
“G” and the “T” especially. When I
look at this title I hear the famously
renowned theme tune for the TV
show Ramin Djawadi wrote for the
show. This Mnemonic device is very
clever as it aids the retrieval the
human memory, thus connecting
this book to the show by music will
instantly increase the readership
and selling point of this book.
Images-
The illustration used here Is something I will make sure it will appear in my own
work. I love how it looks hand drawn and not over edited, its seems authentic. The
dire wolf resembles Winterfell and The Stark legacy it suggests that the heart of
this book is right there, where the wolf is standing full of mystery, legacy and love
ready to be discovered by the reader. I will use this as discusse, as using a
iconographic symbol like a Dragon or a Lion or a Dire Wolf connotes so much more
than just the image itself, its very effective.

Problem Solving Evaluation Experiments.
During my problem solving I wanted to develop as many ways as possible to learn new technical skills on
software's such as Photoshop Adobe, and InDesign, this skills varied from basic to advanced.
To develop this skills I went on many different forums, such as YouTube, Facebook, Google, and the Adobe help
site. I thought this was essential for my work to gather as many different sources as possible to see if there was
any short cuts to make my production process quicker and easier. I also tested out these skills on my
experiments in which I made three.
Product experiments:

Problem Solving Evaluation (Organisalional)
• Throughout the problem solving process I had a list of a few thing I needed to keep in order: “Identify potential issues that you will
encounter – this is like the contingency planning you will have done this year, use some of that and update it
• You should also identify things you need to know/do/etc to make your product – so, illustration techniques which you’ve seen in your
research, how can you learn them? Anything you can find out and teach yourself or understand before you do you project, will be
invaluable for this section.”
• I firstly created a contingency table which consisted of potential problems, the effect on production and solution control. All three of
these elements were invaluable to my production, this helped me be aware and watch for any issues that might occur throughout my
project, in all honesty I kept my eyes open for issues such as my computer breaking and always backing my work up on a hard drive or
a memory stick. However I probably spent too much time doing this when I could have spent more time on more time consuming
parts of my project such as research.

Planning and Copy - overall I managed to clearly say in bullet points the contents of each character and what I was going to talk
about; Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister, in great detail, I talked about the heroic and villainous, and history of
each character. I felt this this was stronger part of my FMP as I did a lot of research and I personally enjoyed this element of my
fanzine the most, as I could utilize my interested and knowledge of the show and book, this also meant I could show my readership
to others to inform and perhaps inform them. A weakness of my planning was definitely I could have gone into to more detail
about the graphics in problem solving for example analysing them.
In my planning and copy I started with making mock ups plans of all my double pages and front covers. This was essential for me to
do be done get the ball rolling. This is the part in my project where I felt all the research I had done finally started to come to
together. I can could decided artistically where I wanted my main images to go, the titles, articles, and other codes and conventions
of a fanzine. I used lorem Ipsum to bulk out the articles, so that I could get a visual of what my double pages would look like with a
lot of text in it. This is vital for me to have a visual of what my work will look like in order to make my work as accurate as possible.

Planning and Preparation Evaluation
• After completing my mock ups of my fanzine I then went onto writing the copy and the articles that were going to be in all
of my double pages, I used many resources to get this done, for example a lot of the content was influenced by the books
and the series as well as my own knowledge.
• I am very happy how these turned out as my articles are full of accurate facts are in detail and I think would keep the reader
interested. This is essential for creating an interesting fanzine, to educate and entertain an audience at the same time.
• In reflection I wish I included more facts about each characters love life as this was something I stated in my proposal but
did not have time to fulfil. This could have been down to a scheduling issue.

Production Process Evaluation
The first thing I did when making my
Jon snow double page spread was
opening InDesign and creating the
two pages by following this steps.
I found these techniques within my
research, I intend to find more
techniques in order to develop my
work. -Move, duplicate, and delete
pages and spreads
You can use the Pages panel to freely
arrange, duplicate, and recombine
pages and spreads. Keep the
following guidelines in mind when
adding, arranging, duplicating, or
removing pages within a document:
InDesign preserves the threads
between text frames.
InDesign redistributes pages
according to how the Allow
Document Pages To Shuffle
command is set.
An object that spans multiple pages
stays with the page on which the
object’s bounding box covers the
most area.
As you drag, the vertical bar indicates
where the page will appear when you
drop it. If the black rectangle or bar
touches a spread when Allow Pages
to Shuffle is turned off, the page
you’re dragging will extend that
spread; otherwise, document pages
will be redistributed to match the
Facing Pages setting in the
File > Document Setup dialog box.
In the Pages panel, drag a page icon
to a new position within the
document.
After creating the actual double page I wanted to make the old
looking burnt out paper imagery by following the steps I had used
before in problem solving: Step 1: Create A New Photoshop
Document
Go up to the File menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen
and choose New:
enter 1000 pixels for both the Width and Height, and I'll leave
my Resolution set to 72 pixels/inch
Step 2: Fill The Document With A Light Brown
Go up to the Edit menu at the top of the screen and choose Fill
This opens the Fill dialog box. Set the Use option at the top of the
dialog box to Color:
Add A New Layer
Click on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel:
Step 4: Apply The Clouds Filter
Foreground and Background colours are set to their defaults by
pressing the letter D on your keyboard. This resets your Foreground
colour to black and your Background colour to white
You can see what the colours are currently set to by looking at the
Foreground and Background color swatches near the bottom of the
Tools panel:
Apply The Spatter Filter
Go back up to the Filter menu and this time choose Brush Strokes,
then choose Spatter:
Change The Blend Mode To Overlay And Lower The Opacity
Select The Burn Tool
Select Photoshop's Burn Tool from the Tools panel, which we're
going to use to darken the paper's edges. By default, it's nested
behind the Dodge Tool, so click on the Dodge Tool's icon and hold
your mouse button down for a second or two until a fly-out menu
appears showing the other tools available in that spot, then select
the Burn Tool from the list:
After adding the burnt paper, I then wanted to add the text into my columns
on adobe InDesign I as shown on the next slide.
I then went on to adding the double page spreads title. ‘House Stark
Jon Snow. I struggled with this as I wanted it to be slightly bigger but I
could not manage changing the title around all of this in the time
frame that I had.

• Add columns to a new document. You can change the number of columns in a new document to make working on
it easier.
• Use InDesign to add columns to an existing document
• Change columns in master or spread pages

Using a cut-out filter in Photoshop.
Set the background
Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic, and go to the
Cutout option. We want the background to be
low in detail, to draw the attention to the
subject, so use Levels: 2, Simplicity: 4 and
Fidelity: 2.

Ctrl/right-click and then choose the Refine Edge
option to iron out any edges
Click the Mask icon, and go to Filter>Filter
Gallery. Choose Cutout again, and use Levels: 2,
Simplicity: 0 and Fidelity: 2 for more detail than
before.
I feel this is a really interesting way to show
characters in a fanzine. I like how Jon snow
almost looks like a cartoon or even hand painted
like you would see in the books of game of
thrones. I think it added something to different
to my work and is a new skill I learnt throughout
this process. I continued to use this skill
throughout my work. The only thing is that I
wished I had used more images in my double
page spread. To engaged the reader.

page spread I wanted it to be
dark and eerie, even though
this isn’t exactly representative
of Tyrions character I thought
the dark colour schemes would
add more interest to the reader
with reds, white, and blacks
etc. How to add a dark sea
background:
I wanted to add an background to be behind all my stock images and text. Firstly I wanted to look for a dark and eerie image that would convey with the imagery of Game of thrones, This is
why I picked a black, choppy sea. I applied this to the white A4 background by; hose Window > Layers.
Choose a command from the Photoshop Layers panel menu
Click the triangle in the upper-right corner of the panel.
Change the size of Photoshop layer thumbnails
Choose Panel Options from the Layers panel menu, and select a thumbnail size.
Change thumbnail contents
Choose Panel Options from the Layers panel menu, and select Entire Document to display the contents of the entire document. Select Layer Bounds to restrict the thumbnail to the object’s
pixels on the layer.

to install them.

Production Process Evaluation Within my front cover and back cover,
I wanted it to be fairly bright, with a
range of colours to capture the
audience’s eye when first opening the
fanzine, to do this I used the ‘gradient
tool, to create an interesting blend of
colours that changes from the top to
the bottom of the double pages. I
used the colour from previously made
colour schemes on Adobecolour.com.
I did this by following these steps:
Choose the Gradient tool and click the
Gradient Editor button on the Options
bar.
Click a stop and click the colour
swatch to the right of the word Colour
to open the Colour Picker and assign a
different colour to the stop.
Click anywhere below the gradient
preview to add more color stops.
Drag a color stop off the Gradient
Editor dialog box to delete it.
Click the top of the gradient preview
to assign different stops with varying
opacity.
In the text in my front
cover and back cover I
wanted to use minimal
writing as I had a lot
going on in the main
image with the throne,
Jon Snow, Daenerys,
and finally Tyrion. I
simply decided to place
the title of ‘Game Of
thrones’ and my name.
I found this to be
simple but effective.
I liked the use of white
against the darker
colours on my front
cover as I feel it
popped against the
dark. This is something
I will do again.

A halftone, or halftone image, is an image comprised of
discrete dots rather than continuous tones. When
viewed from a distance, the dots blur together, creating
the illusion of continuous lines and shapes.
By halftoning an image.
Using a cut-out filter in Photoshop. I used cut out filter on all of
my images in my fanzine, as I enjoyed this effect so much.
Set the background
Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic, and go to the Cutout option. We
want the background to be low in detail, to draw the attention to
the subject, so use Levels: 2, Simplicity: 4 and Fidelity: 2.

Select the subject using a Quick Selection. Ctrl/right-click and then
choose the Refine Edge option to iron out any edges
Click the Mask icon, and go to Filter>Filter Gallery. Choose Cutout
again, and use Levels: 2, Simplicity: 0 and Fidelity: 2 for more
detail than before.

The background for this image is actually a mountain, I duplicated the layer 3 times (landscape) and layered them all the
way down the page. I felt this way very effective, as the mother of dragons is used to being in the sky so I felt a sky
background would be very fitting for her, to blend these images I used the blending tool, to make sure there was no
harsh lines among the sky background. I found this tool to be very effective and it helped me make my over all image
seem very smooth.
I then went on to placing the Targaryen house crest on my double page. I did this by open the image from which you'd like to cut an element
out using the File menu or drag the image into the workspace. In the Layer menu, which is located on the right-hand side of the workspace by
default, you'll see the image listed as Background. Click the lock icon to make the image work as a layer instead.

To make my content page I wanted
it to stand out against the other
double pages. For example the
white back ground was done
intentionally so that the map of
Westeros Stood out clearly. I tried
many different ways to make the
map portrait and landscape. But
unfortunately you could not see
the writing the on the contents
page, so I decided is was more
important to leave the map on the
right hand side of the double page
spread.
I then wanted to add a boarder
around my double page spread as
I felt this was essential to making
the contents page stand out and
still fit the with genre of Game Of
thrones as it the boarder I feel
makes the page look vintage and
interesting to look at.
This is certainly something I
will include again in future
projects.
Again I used to fonts ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘breathe fire’ as this created a link to all the other pages in my
fanzine. I liked the use of the colour red in the title font as it almost looks like it has been written in red
ink, similar to what you see in the series. I definatley think this page could have been more developed.

Expectations
• Pre-proposal and Proposal- A strength of my pre-proposal it helped develop my initial ideas for my project. The graph that the it is
set in helped me organise my thoughts, so I could look back on it when I’m doing my project. Although brief it still gave me a kick
start as to where I was going with my project. A weakness of my pre-proposal was that I spent too much time on it, and wasted
valuable time that could have been spent on different elements of my project, such as research. A strength my proposal was that
my bibliography was very in detailed I used many different sources to inform my research that followed afterwards, I felt this is
something I have definitely improved upon from previous topics. A weakness of my proposal was that I could have expanded on
my title of my fanzine, as I feel that ‘Game of Thrones’ isn’t very creative.

• Research- A strength of my research was that I felt there was a lot of useful content that helped me inform the rest of my work, for
example the contextual research was very helpful with the psychology of colour helped me develop what colour schemes would
be best for each double page, for example I used each house’s colour on for each character, stark, Lannister, etc. However I feel
could have done more research on existing products on fan websites as this is a different element of fan based products.
• Problem solving-
• I firstly created a contingency table which consisted of potential problems, the effect on production and solution control. All three
of these elements were invaluable to my production, this helped me be aware and watch for any issues that might occur
throughout my project, in all honesty I kept my eyes open for issues such as my computer breaking and always backing my work up
on a hard drive or a memory stick. However I probably spent too much time doing this when I could have spent more time on
more time consuming parts of my project such as research.
